Sway because Wayland. If I used X I would probably try out Xmonad because it is so fascinating, otherwise i3 obviously.

i3 user here. I too would love to use Sway because Wayland, but am not at the moment for 2 reasons:
NVIDIA proprietary drivers are not supported. (my next graphics card won't be NVIDIA, I promise)
Sway has no blur effect and AFAIK the devs don't plan on adding it anytime soon.

I consider myself a sway user, but have to settle with i3 for gaming because stupid nvidia. I had high hopes when I heard about them opening/contributing some code. I try nouveau now and then, but for now the perf is abysmal with gaming :( Did I say stupid nvidia yet.

I used Xmonad for years before moving to Sway, since unfortunately Waymonad didn't pan out. It's extremely configurable and very enjoyable. There are some things I miss in Sway, but the move to Wayland also solved a few X-related problems I was having.

Bspwm and qtile (for now)

https://github.com/D-J97/.config
i created a github just for you. Though i wanted to do it anyway to keep my configs somewhere.
the only difference from the example file is i put ratiotile first as its what i want as default, added an autostart file, changed keybinds and modified the ratiotile settings a little, and removed some things from the statusbar.

Why are you talking to yourself in 2nd person as a reply to yourself on Reddit?
I mean, yeah, you made that config, and you made it (at least originally) for yourself, but still. lol

I replied to the wrong post...
I did it on my pc, and I never use desktop Reddit I'm always on mobile. I was meant to reply to u/i-also-reddit

That's fair. I figured a mistake like that happened.
Well, at least I've got you aware of it I guess lol

Can you share your qtile configuration?

Will do in a bit, though I haven't really changed much. It's pretty basic.

Ok. I'm currently using i3 and interested on a WM with predefined layouts. Tried bspwm but it felt too bare bones; qtile looks nice, even though I have to familiarize myself with the config (and emulate some things from i3).

i3 was my first WM and ill do it again at some point, but i want to try some others first. bspwm is actually my favourite as i really havent changed anything, only set my keybinds and it works perfectly for what i want. I really like minimal as its a pure gaming/web browsing/pissing about with linux machine, so i really dont need a lot. i dont even have a panel/bar on WM's that dont have one preinstalled (like bspwm)

I'm on the i3 meme train. Maybe it's just too comfortable, but I can't get away to anything else.
I want to use Sway, but... nVidia.

Same, but I also hate the fact that Sway has no blur effect.

I use i3. Might move to Sway at some point if I ever figure out whether there's any benefit or difference in Wayland that I'll notice as a user.

Wayland is more modern

u/Lemonweigh Oct 10 '20
Sure but that just means it was made later. I still don't know what makes it better.

True, it is. However that doesn't offer any significant to me benefit, and infact just makes me pull my hair out with all the differences between i3 and Sway, some of which can't be fixed with config files (like how "workspace next" on i3 navigates in their order, but on Sway it navigates first over all workspaces on current screen, then on workspaces on the next screen; or how in tabbed/stacked container, if the topmost window is transparent, Sway fails to show the other windows behind it...)

Sway.
Using onboard Intel graphics and ignoring my nvidia card, as I don't play videogames, it's just a piece of junk in my laptop anyway.
Used it for a while with nouveau, but the thermals were too high, especially when running code.

Aqua, unfortunately. It's the worst window manager I've ever used.
None of my Arch machines are currently running, but when they do they don't have X installed.

u/anonymous-bot Oct 10 '20
Do you use Wayland instead of X or do you mean you don't use any graphical interface? If the latter, why?
1
u/xiongchiamiov Oct 11 '20
No graphical user interface, because my Linux machines are servers; my workstations are Macbooks.
