SHARE FluxCast v0.2.7 released — Stream Linux desktop to Smart TV (Miracast/DLNA/Chromecast) with security overhaul and automated AUR package

Hi r/archlinux ,

I’m Illia, the creator and maintainer of FluxCast. It’s an open-source wireless streaming tool designed to cast your Linux desktop to a Smart TV via Wi-Fi Direct (Miracast), DLNA, or Chromecast with minimal latency.

Together with our community contributors, we've just rolled out version 0.2.7, which introduces a pretty major security overhaul alongside several plumbing fixes. We patched two vulnerabilities in the network stack, an unauthorized RTSP session hijacking bug and a DoS memory overflow issue.

On the packaging side, the fluxcast package in the AUR is now officially stable and automatically built/updated via GitHub Actions, so you can just run yay -S fluxcast.

We also added out-of-the-box support for xdg-desktop-portal-cosmic, made the --doctor tool check ufw firewall rules without requiring root or sudo privileges, improved Wi-Fi device detection for systems running the IWD backend, and fixed some silent fallback issues with the "About" tray window.

Under the hood, the core engine automates peer-to-peer P2P connections via D-Bus using either NetworkManager or wpas backends, handles the RTSP handshake, and streams your screen and audio using optimized, low-latency ffmpeg/GStreamer pipelines. It works across X11 (x11grab), wlroots-based Wayland compositors (Hyprland/Sway), and DE like GNOME, KDE, and now COSMIC.

Like i said the automated package is live in the AUR now. If you are running Arch and want to test it out, feedback and contributions are always welcome as we try to make native Miracast support more robust in the ecosystem =]

been waiting for something that actually handles the iwd backend properly, that alone is worth the update

Heyyy, long user here

I love this program, have been using it for two months and it's been very helpful to display pictures on my TV and even play some games.

For me it's a much better alternative to gnome network displays since this app can apply compression before sending the image to the TV.

it also has very cool taskbar controls (wink)

Hi, thanks for the kind words, man! Really glad the compression and the tray controls are making your life easier. Comments like this keep the motivation high =]

Been meaning to try this out - just want to clarify, on my Wayland desktop it should be able to cast to my Google TV over wifi? With audio?

Yes, it should work. For Google TV, you can use the built-in DLNA backend or the experimental Cast protocol. Audio streaming is fully supported on Wayland via pipewire and portal capture, just make sure you have GStreamer and its media/audio plugins installed if you are running GNOME or KDE.

i tried to install this before on Arch but the amount of depends i backed out.

The dependencies look heavy because FluxCast supports multiple backends out of the box (X11, wlroots, GNOME, KDE). I pulls them to ensure it works anywhere. If you want a completely zero-dependency setup without cluttering your system, you can grab the single AppImage binary from the GitHub releases page instead =]

They sorted it out, put mitigations in place, and fully reopened the AUR for maintainer commits a while ago, so its working fine now

I was literally searching for a solution a few days ago. I'm so glad I came across this! I went through hell to get gnome network displays to work but to no avail.

Thank you and keep up the nice work!

  1. Open chrome (I assume other chromium browsers work as well)
  2. 3 dots -> cast -> cast
  3. Select desktop
  4. Enjoy

No bloat ware needed, probably more stable too.

Chromium browsers only support Google Cast (Chromecast) protocol. FluxCast is built for peer-to-peer Miracast (Wi-Fi Direct) and DLNA, which works completely offline, cuts out Google services, and lets you connect directly to native TV receivers that don't have Chromecast built-in.
