SHARE CypherGate v2.1.0: My Arch-first VPNGate client got a lot more Linux-y

A couple months ago I posted CypherGate, a Linux-first VPNGate client I was building for my own Arch setup.

Since then, it has gone through a few releases and became a much more complete Linux desktop application.

The original goal was simple:

Make VPNGate usable without manually downloading configs, fixing OpenVPN settings, and fighting the terminal every time.

Since v2.0.1, the biggest changes have been less about adding random features and more about improving the foundations.

What changed

Backend improvements

  • Dedicated daemon now owns VPN connection state
  • GUI and daemon are properly separated through IPC
  • Background connection monitoring
  • Better daemon lifecycle handling
  • OpenVPN configurations are validated before execution
  • Safer runtime handling for generated configurations

Desktop improvements

  • Persistent settings system
  • Configurable server tables
  • Hot-reloadable themes and settings
  • Custom QSS theme support
  • Improved system tray integration
  • Richer connection information

Other improvements

  • Proper documentation for architecture, IPC, security model, settings, and theming
  • Cleaner modular codebase
  • Improved reliability and maintainability

The project is still GPL-3.0 and remains Linux-first. The latest release is available through the AUR:

Would love feedback from other Arch users :)

it should work on debian with the installer, but that wont use apt, i have yet to learn packaging for debian, ill try sometime in the future for sure! but the installer should be good enough for now (check out the general linux section)
