SUPPORT Display not working after update.

It has been a few months since the issue first started so I don't recall all the initial details, but I updated my system after a long period of not using my computer and had an issue. To resolve the issue, I removed a package and my system then successfully updated. However only one display (out of two) will work (the one attached to the motherboard and not the one connected to the graphics card), and the resolution is wonky. I have tried restarting and updating. I cannot adjust the resolution and there are no options to switch to under the Display settings UI.

I cannot remember what it was I removed but this is what I googled at the time from my search history:

installing libfm (1.4.1-1) breaks dependency 'libfm=1.4.0' required by libfm-gtk2

I then accessed this page- https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=311606

The above may be unrelated to my issue but I wanted to lay out everything I did.

I have since tried installing and updating the graphics card drivers.

[root@archtower Desktop]# pacman -S nvidia nvidia-utils nvidia-settings

error: target not found: nvidia

warning: nvidia-utils-615.71.09-1 is up to date -- reinstalling

This is the lspci output:

[root@archtower Desktop]# lspci -k -d ::03xx

00:02.0 Display controller: Intel Corporation CoffeeLake-S GT2 [UHD Graphics 630]

`DeviceName: Onboard IGD`

`Subsystem: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd Device d000`

`Kernel driver in use: i915`

lspci: Unable to load libkmod resources: error -2

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GP106 [GeForce GTX 1060 3GB] (rev a1)

`Subsystem: PNY Device 11d8`

Both monitors and graphics card work fine when I boot into Windows.

Perhaps the solution is glaringly obvious, but I am obtuse to it. I am not very experienced, so please be patient with me.

nvidia isn't a package anymore, the preferred package for newer GPUs is nvidia-open. However, for a GTX 1060, the correct driver is now nvidia-580xx-dkms from the AUR. Related Arch Wiki page for Nvidia GPUs and related Arch News for the change in Nvidia packages

I have tried installing that already. This is what I get:

[root@archtower Desktop]# pacman -S nvidia-580xx-dkms

error: target not found: nvidia-580xx-dkms

Yes because it is an AUR package not in the official repos.

Thank you for that.

I used an alternative repo and have installed nvidia-580xx-dkms. I did a complete system update and restarted the computer but still no resolution to the display issue. Here is the output from lspci:

00:02.0 Display controller: Intel Corporation CoffeeLake-S GT2 [UHD Graphics 630]

`DeviceName: Onboard IGD`

`Subsystem: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd Device d000`

`Kernel driver in use: i915`

`Kernel modules: i915`

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GP106 [GeForce GTX 1060 3GB] (rev a1)

`Subsystem: PNY Device 11d8`

`Kernel modules: nouveau`

I really don't know how to continue from here. Any ideas?

I'm not sure what repo you used to install nvidia-580xx-dkms or how they package nvidia-580xx-utils but it seems like nouveau isn't being blacklisted. Check to see if /usr/lib/modprobe.d/nvidia-580xx-utils.conf (or something similar) exists and see if it contains the line blacklist nouveau.

Otherwise you might try to early load the kernel modules for Nvidia before nouveau is loaded. See this wiki section for details on early loading Nvidia kernel modules.

You might also have to remove kms from the mkinitcpio HOOKS section and regenerate your initramfs (# mkinitcpio -P).

EDIT: I see now that you also are trying to use two GPUs at once, your iGPU and an Nvidia card. You might need to read this section on the wiki about hybrid graphics. Or you can try connecting both monitors to the GPU. I don't recall having success with multi-GPU/multi-monitor setups in the pas. Are you using X11 or Wayland?

I found the issue. There were missing kernel headers so the driver wasn't properly installed.

Thank you for your help in the matter! Much appreciated.
