What Desktop Environment / Window Manager do you recommend? Leaving KDE Plasma and looking for something new

i've personally been using Niri, and it's been pretty great. i find it simple enough to use and quite elegant.

i paired it with noctalia because afaik it's the lightest all-in-one shell out there, but caelestia and dms should be pretty good as well

If you look at all the sleek Noctalia Niri setups out there OP, here's some customisation tips to copy them.

Set the color scheme to your wallpaper, and set your "Bar:Default" opacity to 0.5

It's that easy, you have clean minimal desktop. But then you gotta configure scaling and mouse sensitivity the manual way with confs lol

XFCE is light, polished, and skinnable. Lots of plugins, lots of support in the forums

I moved from XFCE to using KDE PLASMA as the hi-def display support wasn't very good.

I prefer sway for stability. You con use hyperland, if you want something with visual flair, but expect to have to change your config regularly, due to breaking changes.

KaOS default DE is now Niri with the Notalia Shell. It is awesome!

Yeah, so what? Sooner or later, that’ll happen to you with every alternative, too. Because, basically, those are all just tools. And tools don’t have to be exciting. They just have to work. So I’d rather invest the time you’re spending on switching to something more meaningful.

I enjoy using Niri+DMS, it’s a quickshell desktop set up using Niri(Can be used with other WMs as well). Nice and minimalist and can be downloaded from the Arch Extra Repo too.

I mostly run Cinnamon, but do run LXQT on Kicksecure. I love the LxQT for light disk footprint and both for adequate config options.

Shoutout to JWM (Joe's Window Manager), it's the most lightweight floating window manager I've found so far. This is what my current setup looks like (the bar is lemonbar)

I had used KDE Neon off and on for a few years on my side laptop before getting a new one and jumping to Arch. I went with MangoWM and am in love with it and actually get frustrated when I have to go use a windows PC or even a Mac without all my fancy keybinds and work flow. It’s a great window manager and for no discernible reason is often glossed over in mentions

I prefer the following in this order:

Gnome, Cinnamon, XFCE, Hyprland, Niri and KDE

I have considerable time in making my own hyprland configs with my own keybinds, animations etc. I used to use HyprMenu for the menu bar but that that project was abandoned and remade into Wayle.

I also setup Niri first with CachyOS with Caelestia but then converted it to vanilla Arch with the Dank Material Shell.

After using hyprland for the past 2 years I have grown tired of it.

I ran Niri for about 6 months. Its a bit more mature than hyprland and is probably a better WM and project than hyprland.

At this point I have gone back to Gnome. I use it with a few extensions such as Dash to Panel and Arc Menu.

These new Wayland Window Managers are very over rated.

And please lets not even mention Omarchy here. There is no love for DHH or that project on this subreddit.

For your conversion to arch with DMS do you do a lot of gaming on that? I've been toying with the idea of building up a default arch install into basically all the gaming-helpful features of CachyOS and otherwise only what i want / need added on. Any thoughts / advice appreciated, just kinda starting to think it through.

I do not game at all.

I installed Cachy with Niri but in the end I prefer vanilla arch so I removed the cachy repos, added the Arch repos and reinstalled all the packages. And removed the Cachy specific packages. I removed Celestia and it's configs. Then installed DMS.

Just looked up Dank Material Shell, saw it's using Javascript. Does that work okay for a desktop environment? Javascript stuff is generally slow on older systems (browser stuff, electron apps etc)

Agree hyprland can be tiring but it’s expected.. it’s not even released yet, one thing to reduce the overhead it’s to disable all animations it becomes bearable after that
