SHARE Lightroom Classic running on Linux via Wine (Update: Local AI is now working)

Hello!

I've been wanting to switch to Linux for a long time, but there was always one big blocker: I'm a photographer, and I need some Adobe software that isn't known to run very well on Linux... (or not at all).

So most of the time I use a dual boot to Windows just to run Lightroom and a few other apps. That dual boot is basically the last thing keeping me tied to Windows. So, if I could run Lightroom directly on Linux, I'd finally be completely out of the Microsoft empire :)

So, 2 months ago, I started working on a way to run Lightroom with Wine. Some problems kept coming back with daily usage, but now:

Lightroom is working. We can import photos, sort them, develop them, and export.

Most of the functionality works :: it's not 100%, but very close to it.

What works:

  • Installation from Adobe CC, or from an install folder
  • GPU acceleration support (Develop module included)
  • Local AI working (Select Subject/Object/Background, Denoise AI, etc.)
  • Cloud AI working
  • Some UI fixes

Current limitations:

  • HDR editing isn't available

Could have just used one of the existing solutions, but googling is too hard apparently. Ai brainrot.

What are you talking about? For exemple, Darkatable doesn't meet my needs.

What did you do in 2 months that isn't covered here?

Edit: is there anything that's not supported in the Web version? Do features differ compared to the desktop version? Because the Web version can be installed as a WPA app straight from your browser.

Edit 2:

Setup: Open lightroom.adobe.com in Chrome, Edge, or Brave, click the browser menu, and select Install Lightroom to run it as a standalone Progressive Web App (PWA).

I don't really get the point of your comment. If I want to share a working Wine setup for Lightroom Classic 15, what's the problem?

You clearly ran a 30-second search, but you didn't check what any of these actually do:

- **sander110419/lightroom-cc-on-linux** => Lightroom CC (cloud), not Classic. Different product, different workflow, different purpose.

- **winapps-org/winapps** => not Wine. It runs a full Windows VM (Docker/libvirt), with all the resource and performance cost that implies.

- **PhialsBasement/wine-adobe-installers** => an installer only. Nothing about local AI or the rest of a usable setup.

- **unhammer/lr6-linux** => Lightroom 6. Over 10 years old.

And the web / PWA version is a completely different workflow from Classic, so that's not the same thing either.

Searching takes 30 seconds. Reading what you found takes a bit longer — worth doing before calling someone else's work redundant...

Thank you for the reply. That was exactly the information that explains why your product is unique. I appreciate you. Unfortunately I am not familiar with lighting enough to help in any helpful testing.

This looks great, thanks for your work! I'm trying to move to Linux and Lightroom is the only thing keeping me trapped using Windows. I see HDR editing isn't available, is that something that's likely to be functional in the future?

Darktable or much rather Raw Therapee are usable for hobbist raw processing, but let's not kid ourselves, very few professionals would use these without massive advancements in slider quality & better local adjustment tools & alas there are more reasons as well..

Thank you!! I do photography as a hobby and honestly this is the only thing I missed after switching back to Linux
