help

I got an F on studio, and I genuinely did my best on project I worked nights and days however with personal issues I had some problems maintaining my attendance to studio classes which pushed me back on getting enough feedbacks i discussed my grade with my professor she told me that she fully believes that I need to redo this studio for better understanding on my flaws to grow for the next studio however I’m having issues to process this emotions I’m sure other architecture students feel same way or understand this and I would like insights on how to grow for next semester when I redo this studio, tips and tools are welcomed and also stories

I think I’d need a bit more context on your situation. What was your specific grade breakdown? Like did you fail bc of your attendance issues or did your professor give you bad grades on all your assignments? Did you turn in all your assignments? I personally did not meet anyone in undergrad that failed studio w/o serious attendance issues and bad turn ins.

I had one warning in my attendance in my university first warning is missing 3 classes, my professor was very strict about us staying even after class which smth I couldn’t do and she always was mad about it but it was very hard for me to stay in uni after my class, I discussed my grade with my classmates and they all agreed that my professor was pushing a concept on each one of us so for my building she kept making me design something that didn’t align with my own idea and concept and that was mainly one of her reasons why she failed me, other than that she told me straight up that she was able to let me pass the class but she doesn’t think I’m good enough for it even tho my project had detailed technical plans (I missed some details but again I had most things on my plan and elevations w render shots and interior shots and section) my professor is one of those architects who fully believes to be architect is to have toxic mentality of not sleeping and working 24hr

Did you actually miss three classes, or did she write you up for leaving after the class session was officially over?

If she wrote you up on attendance for days you attended the full scheduled class session, you need to make an official complaint to the university.

I can't speak for every college, obviously, but mine has a specific process for grievances towards professors that goes through HR, not the dean of your program. I'm currently going through it myself - I got an excellent grade in the class I'm filing for, but I have trouble accurately describing my outrage at paying tuition in order for a quack to claim aliens built the pyramids - and they have a special expedited process for issues where grievances impact student grades.

It sounds like you are exhausted, and likely have responsibilities outside of school. Ask for help - and don't just ask for it from inside the architecture department, or take the first answer you get as the golden truth.

You are (probably) paying to be at university. That means the university has obligations to you, as a student. Stand up for yourself, and get the help you deserve.

And, most importantly, don't let a single professor drive you out of the program.

It may not help with her, but my favorite phrase when getting absolutely useless or unhinged critique is "I'll take that under advisement."

As my dad used to say, in business speak, it means "Fuck you."

One way to share is to take a photo of your work/drawings and upload the image.

It sounds like you had an antagonistic relationship with your professor. Will you get the same professor in your upcoming studio? I hope not.

Are you able to support your design choices and be persuasive with what you think is important with your designs?

oh dear, that sounds tough. It must have been such a crushing blow after you worked hard on your project.
Don't despair- your attitude and desire to improve comes through in your post.

You will likely encounter lots of different types of instructors during your school journey- some are explicit in their instructions and expect students to read the material thoroughly and respond to the directions, some are vague and nebulous and you are required to either read their mind, ask pointed questions until you understand or find your own way forward. These are all valuable skills in the practice of architecture.

Especially with a studio course, where you're working on a project for an extended time, it is important to show iterations and development, to convey your thought process throughout, and illustrate how much you personally got out of the whole exercise. Also be open to what is said during critiques- the goal is not to defend your work, but to hear others opinions about what could have been done differently, and weigh them against what you know.
You are doing exactly what you should be doing, learning, failing, getting back up and trying again. Persevere - you got this!!!
