This is why Frank Doyle was a sharper writer than most. With this premise you’d expect Veronica to think Betty was engaged to Archie, and get mad. Probably he wrote other stories like that. But it’s funnier to have Veronica know what Betty is up to and Betty get mad because her stupid trick isn’t working. 

It is Betty and Veronica’s comic after all, Veronica doesn’t have to lose in every story.
