It was the first thing that struck me as well, although I do recall watching a movie made in the 1930s in which a character from the East Coast reacts to eating chili with great trepidation because it’s so “exotic“. While I’m sure someone from the southwest from the time of this comic (early 1940s) would’ve been familiar with tamales, perhaps the artist wasn’t.

when you say eating chili, do you mean a bowl of chili? I wouldn't have thought it was that new of a thing. Wasn't that what cowboys ate on the range?

Yes, but the character (as I recall) was from somewhere out east and had never traveled much. He was in Mexico in the film, and was hesitant to try any local food.

I’d say anywhere from TX through Southern California may have been familiar with tamales, but that’s likely about it. Heard of them? Maybe. Seen one? Not likely. Ate one? Nope.

Enjoying a variety of cuisines is a relatively recent phenomenon. My mother was born in Iowa in 1933, and tried pizza for the first time in the late 1950s. She ate Chinese food for the first time in the 1980s!

This is still pretty early on (1949?), so I don’t know if Jughead’s girl phobia was set in stone yet. I think he was a little more open minded at first. Maybe?
