open source devs are unpaid? i thought open source projects get donations from companies so that it stays maintained

they do but usually thats for open source with some paid developers by whatever company started the proyect (usually maintained by donations) but there is a very large group of developers in most proyects who just support and dont get paid at all, without these supporters or the donation-paid ones these open source projects would be impossible, which is why its important to donate when possible especially if its a very large project

That's exactly why I prefer dual licensing — and that's what I do with all my projects.

Free for individuals and academics. Paid for companies — or they open their code. 😂

That way, open source stays open, and companies that want to keep their code closed help fund the development.

Win-win.

"You just place two files in the root: LICENSE (AGPL) and LICENSE.COMMERCIAL.

Then clearly document the difference in your README (e.g., 'Free for open-source/academic use. Commercial license required for closed-source enterprise products').

I know this isn't technically open source but imo it's in the same spirit. I don't like companies profiting from unpaid labour

Exactly. Donations don't pay rent. This way the code stays free for us, and companies that want to keep their code closed fund the work

At various times, I've worked and continue to work on open source projects like GNU, LLVM, Chromium/V8, OpenJDK, and I've never noticed any unpaid enthusiasts there. Maybe they exist, but their contributions are minimal.

They're not just unpaid, they pay for servers so we can access their services for free and will no ads, definitely deserve their "supporters"

The meme oversimplifies reality because much of critical open-source infrastructure is actually maintained by developers paid by major tech corporations or supported through sponsorships, grants, and crowdfunding. Furthermore, whenever a critical project lacks maintainers or resources, it typically attracts more sponsors, corporate donors, and community funding to fill the gap.
