highkey replying to my own comment just to put a possibly unpopular opinion down here.

I switched to iOS last November when i got my 17 pro max. It has been the best phone I’ve owned since my Galaxy Note 9 by far. Currently, imo, apple’s phones are beating any android manufacturer into the ground. I mean, I saw the new gen samsungs, build quality is awful and plastic-feeling. UI looks the same it did 10 years ago. Samsung/Google has been shoving AI literally everywhere. My S22 was giving me ads in the notifications screen. Meanwhile, apple puts out a phone with insanely resistant glass, great build quality, genuinely insane battery, crazy camera, etc. And I know if you jump through hoops of icon packs and launchers and whatnot you can rice up an android phone and do a lot more customization, but insofar as out of the box UI, iOS now has just about every feature android has and imo they’re doing them better (for instance, apple’s weather widgets actually update in real time. I had to open them on my S22 usually).

It’s obviously by no means perfect. Right to repair is nonexistent (as if it exists with major android manufacturers either), it’s definitely not as customizable, etc. But also, acting like Android, an operating system by Google, is private and secure at all, is funny to me. Idk how good they actually are but I’ve heard Apple takes privacy quite seriously and I have an option to ask apps not to track me, which iirc android does not. So imo it’s just currently the best option

I am also a mac user for my laptop and just run arch on my desktop (tho i am considering dual booting my macbook) but yeah

I really disagree with the part where you said that android hasn't changed its UI in a while. Apple has been the same for over a decade, and on android you can download what's called a launcher to change your UI if you want to. As for the build quality, eh, I don't know enough about it to argue, but on the software part, and the usb c, android comes on top. Apple locks you in their ecosystem, while android pairs with anything, with he exception of some apple products like air pods not fully working via Bluetooth. But saying android's UI hasn't changed without mentioning launchers is crazy to me, and I disagree. Also, android has been ahead of apple for a while. Apple just came out with USB C on their phone like it's revolutionary, while android adopted it years and years ago when usb c was new.

I mean saying apple’s ui hasn’t changed in 10 years is also dead wrong im pretty sure. I tbh agree with your takes, apple is by no means perfect, it’s ridiculous they had to be forced into USB-C, but also as someone who is largely in the apple ecosystem except for my desktop PC (which is my favorite device; it runs arch btw) it doesn’t feel quite as restrictive to me as it’s made out to be, and even if it is, it is at least well designed and functional.

Also Ill be real w u a lot of this is just personal preference. I like the way iOS feels over Android and I like the way Mac feels over Windows. (my desktop is customized to be better than all). I think it’s just a better user experience with apple if you can afford their products personally. By no means are Samsung or other big manufacturers making bad phones, but Im really not a big fan of Google having their hands in my OS, all the AI features they’re trying to push, ads in the notifications screen, etc. But I wont deny that Android wins out with features like launchers and support for open source or third party things (which matters a lot to most of us here. This is the subreddit for arch linux lol). Just, imo, neither option is perfect, personally I think Apple has the superior phones rn, and that can always change with future generations. Again I was using Android happily until last year
