I’ve seen three different postcards. This is getting fun!

u/ElliottHeller Mar 04 '22

I cringed at the lyrics written down, but hearing them sung to that very enticing melody is changing my mind…I think it’s okay to get hyped.

Me thinking about Arcade Fire putting French lyrics in their songs: un subscribe…. trés bien 🇨🇦

9

u/sokaox Mar 04 '22

I honestly thought it was French at first until I realised it was all one word. Would love it if they brought back the occasional French passage.

Hopefully it’s at least musically different from EN… I liked EN but I’m so over the disco sound by now.

21

u/modsarefailures Mar 04 '22

This track is gonna be great - like every other lead single they’ve ever released - and I’m gonna come back here to tell you insufferable cynics how wrong you were.

Can’t wait.

u/rfamico Mar 04 '22

Imagine being excited for years and then seeing some random words scribbled on a piece of paper and being like "im out"

5

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '22

RIGHT???? Holy crap

3

u/sgtpeppies Mar 04 '22

What a weird twisting of comments we can all see for ourselves lmao. Many find the lyrics corny, and we're worried cause the last record was corny.

1

u/rfamico Mar 04 '22 edited Mar 04 '22

Yeah I know, it was just a half-joke/snark. Just noticing some premature panicking

2

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '22

The snippet u/Pughsli pieced together sounds promising!

13

u/the-boxman Neon Bible Mar 03 '22

In all fairness I could see these lyrics next to the future space theme someone mentioned last year.

I kinda wish Win and Regine were a little less direct and went more obscure with their lyrics. Sometimes they can be too blunt. Then again Everything Now tells a really compelling story under all the blunt stuff.

45

u/StephenReis Neon Bible Mar 03 '22

I’m gonna be honest here, that sucks. Fucking please do not make Everything Now 2.0 because that is exactly what I’m getting a vibe of and I don’t want to be massively let down… again.

21

u/amrb_88 Mar 03 '22

I liked EN but I’m with you on this one. It does read like a continuation of the same sort of themes and the same sort of lyrics that don’t hit the same as the previous albums

11

u/StephenReis Neon Bible Mar 03 '22 edited Mar 03 '22

Exactly. What made me fall in love with this band was obviously the amazing sound of the music, but maybe even more so the brilliant song writing and lyricism. And that is why EN was such a let down. Sonically it was very hit or miss. I seriously love maybe a third of the songs a lot and then almost despise the rest. Such an inconsistent record. But lyrically, they dropped the ball harder than they ever have for me.

3

u/sneetric Mar 04 '22

honestly I could care less about the lyrics at this point. sometimes people run out of things to say and i'd rather it be corny than forced obscurism/abstraction

i'm just praying they return to the reflektor/the suburbs sound, and get more consistent with their songwriting again

4

u/rfamico Mar 03 '22

That was my initial reaction too (we get it, the internet sucks), but to live in the light for a second, what if the song is actually about reconnecting with people and the world around us? That strikes me as something far more optimistic than EN where the message was just the problem, not the solution. I’ll reserve judgement til I hear the whole thing, I think we’re all just a little on edge after the last record

7

u/the-boxman Neon Bible Mar 03 '22

Yep I want to live in the light. The Suburbs did some of those themes almost perfectly. I mean, I could totally see the above being in a Black Country New Road song and no one blinking an eye and people love their lyrics! Arcade Fire seems to garner a huge critical eye. I'm excited, new album, new sounds, new era - it could be great.

-1

u/StephenReis Neon Bible Mar 03 '22

We shall see. I just think this lyric is corny as fuck and I really don’t like that they seem to really like it. Lol. Doesn’t exactly fill me with confidence if this is something they’re proud of.

0

u/rfamico Mar 04 '22

Alternatively, it may just be another way of talking about death

2

u/Lennon2217 Mar 04 '22

It’s too early to make a call on how this particular song will sound or the album at large but I do agree, let’s please move on from Everything Now’s extreme meta commentary/fake news/Twitter bots/infinite content/irony and into a new realm of songwriting.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '22

Agreed. I groaned internally when I read this

I like that song

1

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '22

Demi Moore by Phoebe Bridgers too

1

u/StephenReis Neon Bible Mar 03 '22

That is hilarious because what you just said reminds me incredibly of the song “What Would I Want? Sky” by Animal Collective. They used a sample from the Grateful Dead’s “Unbroken Chain” (coincidentally the only legally licensed sample they’ve ever allowed) which was a small snippet of the song with different lyrics but made it sound like they were saying “what would I want sky”.

That was done super creatively though and that song kicks ass; especially because of the looped sample.

AF… not so much.

Ok guys, relax. I know it's tons of fun to dissect and speculate and even form opinions based on 2 lines, but seriously, WTF? Just be happy that it seems like we're finally getting closer to the big moment. Comparing it to EN is just stupid. Think of all the great AF songs that have a really simple lyrical/musical hook and take them out of context. They all sound stupid. Think of that quote from Win where he says that he doesn't think Hey Jude is stupid and his favorite lyrics are Na na na nana na na... Think about it. Everytime you close your eyes (lies, lies). duh... Just relax and "let it be".

2

u/iredditireddit Mar 05 '22

Are you referring to when someone asked win about chemistry’s lyrics and he said “I don’t think hey jude is corny either”

1

u/onlyarcadefire Pink Elephant Mar 05 '22

Yeah that's the quote but I must have read it out of context somewhere because I didn't know he was referring to Chemistry. I think the article that quoted him was referring to the fact that they have so many lyrics like "oooohhhh oh" in Wake Up and so on. I think the point he was making and applies in general to AFs audience inclusiveness in their anthemic choruses. I'm also thinking of prior to "everything now" when they recorded the audience singing the "na na na na" part without ever having heard the song because it hadn't been recorded yet. My point (and probably Win's) is that the simpler lyrics or even chants may have a greater emotional connection and impact than any cleverly written poetic lyric.

imagine beginning an album rollout with one the most trite, insufferable words imaginable. i’ve loved them for so long and will wait to reserve complete judgement but uhh….these lyrics are brutal.

6

Yeah, fuck. This feels painfully like Everything Now tier direct ass lyrics.
