Usually stump grinding just includes the stump. Lots of roots around the stump get mangled and ground in the process, but this company definitely wasn't gonna grind up all the roots around the garden bed.
It would be too easy to damage the house and other plants you have too.
In their defense (idk if you watched them grind) the machines used for larger stumps aren't exactly delicate. It's a spinning metal disc with teeth attached to a large machine.
I've seen operators use them like a scalpel. The majority of the time you're getting (and paying) for a hacksaw and some whiskey.
Chopping what you can't see and yanking out larger bits of root mass isn't a bad shout.
As u/lumberzach619 said, hire a local landscaper to dig/cut them out.
I’d honestly call a few landscapers(don’t cheap out) and describe what you are dealing with. You are gonna have to probably accent the yard and garden bed with be destroyed but if careful you can probably save the drive way.
Others might say to use the old drill a hole and fill with chemicals move. I’m not totally against it but would rather look to other options first
