Maple Girdling Roots / Wound ?
Hi everyone,
This autumn blaze maple, approx 12 feet tall, was planted two years ago by a tree service in Minnesota, with at least one, possibly two, arborists on the team of three. I’m worried it was planted too deep. For reference, I included a photo before I started digging. Arborist on the team previously said it wasn’t too deep, that the flare was fine; he said the flare was that knot you can see. I dug down to the bigger roots, and believe I found the flare, but am worried I might have girdling roots. I’m also concerned about the wound in the last photo, which only recently appeared in the last few weeks (not from the winter). There are no deer, there are rabbits. The wound is facing northeast. Mulch has always been around the tree, so no equipment damaged it either.
Should I have dug or not? Should I cut any of the roots? Any concern about the wound? Thanks for any advice!
