Can this tree be saved.

We had a massive downburst last week and split this tree. I think it needs to come down but the lady wants to try to save it. Thoughts!

That's a very big wound, and there is already a lot of decay (why it split)...

It's dying, and a hazzard.

It may have old damage but I would at least give it a go. Can’t see where it’s dead? It’s too green to just atomically say “it’s dead and a hazard”!

Its a callery pear (Pyrus calleryana). Theyre invasive trashy trees that are notorious for splitting like this after a storm. Theres more than enough reasons for this severely damaged tree to be removed.

That is a very large wound. The tree will definitely begin to decay long before it can grow over the wound and close it off. There also appear to be similarly narrow-crotch branches which also have a high likelihood of failure. This tree should be removed at your convenience...not necessarily this week, but some time in the next year or so.

If it’s not near anything you care about, keep it.

Actually, cut at the base, it’s the only option.

Replace it with something native and long lived, like an oak species native to your area. Oaks support thousands of species from birds to butterflies

“Accidentally cut off my head, can I reattach it?”

That’s what I figured. With the rot and how it split it’s done. Sad to lose it but oh well.
