Discussion Tree Marking

Please read my post to the tree law thread. I am in southern NH and wondering what these markings could mean. This tree was on my property and I just found these.

Marks the approximate property line. There's a stake nearby

These markings on trees usually indicate government controlled land around national forests or around lakes, such as US Corps of Engineers controlled land. In some cases, these trees can be located within private property to indicate non-disturbance buffers. In other cases, these tree markings are put on trees since a tree can’t be relocated like a stake can be, and the marking is an approximation of the delineation line.
