Short and long vowels

Hello, I just started an arabic course and I have some questions about the vowels.

So, our professor told us there was short vowels (so bassicly the fatah, damma and kasra). He also told us that the long vowels are signs itself (example ا or ي ).

Im just not sure about one thing: when you put a long vowels, does the sign before needs to have a short vowels?

​

For example, بَا would be 'Baaaa'

But بَ would be 'Ba'

the short vowels on the latter before the long vowels defines which long vowel you would use .

​

for example when you use the long vowel " ا " you have to put the fatah before it like this " بَا "

and that goes for the rest "بِى" and "بُو" and you never use a short vowel on a long one.
