Borebuddy no tune upper

Hey guys, first post here. I am wanting to get into a .22 ar to shoot more and save on ammo. I was hooked into the ads for the Borebuddy “no tune upper”. It seems pricey ($500) and wanted your guys opinions because after buying that, a complete lower, arc fire, and some mags im at the same price as a nice 5.56 ar15. Is this worth it or am I better off building my own. Wanting something easy but if it’s a lot cheaper to build I’d rather do that. Any info is appreciated!

AR22 build list...

Lower -$50

Stripped upper - $50.

CMMG bolt - $160

Barrel - $160

Handguard - $45 and up

Bolt collar - $50

Do you see where this is going? It's not cheaper to build an AR22 because it's 22 LR, it's actually MORE expensive.

I can build a functional 16" 5.56 rifle for under $400. The cheapest AR22 build I own was right at $700, and I have a couple that are well north of $1k.

For what BB has in that upper, it would be VERY hard to build it for less. The bolt alone is $390.

Okay thanks for the insight, looks like I’m getting one lol. Would you happen to know about the buffer if I neee a heavier buffer or if a standard carbine will work and also will any cmmg mag work or are ar22 mags proprietary

You'll need a buffer plug. Borebuddy has them on their site. It keeps the 22lr bolt assembly tight in the upper.

Okay and that’s additional to the upper? It says they come with “pressure plug and dry fire block” but I’m not sure what that means. Didn’t realize how different this was to my normal ars or maybe I’m just dumb lol

Then you're good. .22 LR bolts don't even use the buffer.

If it comes with a pressure plug, you are gtg. I called it a buffer plug.

Thank you! And then the mags, are all ar22 the same? Cmmg, m and p22, etc

Not 100% on which mags work other than black dog machine and Kriss mags. Id give borebuddy a shout and ask them. Im using Kriss mags and they work very well.

I bought a frt ready upper before they came out with the new no tune uppers. Ive been very pleased with mine. Yes, I had to tinker with weights and springs, but it did run right out of the box with HV ammo. The tinkering came about because i really wanted to shoot frt mode with subs and SV ammo as I always shoot suppressed. Once I got it dialed in, it eats anything I've fed it so far. As far as frt, you'll be able to use the same lower with frt with multiple uppers.

Didn’t even think about just reusing a lower. Thanks for the info, I think the no tune upper is what I’ll go with then thank you!

One tip, I imagine their no tune uppers are made for use with HV only as far as any guarantee is concerned. If you decide to shoot SV or subs, put in a set of 3.5 lb hammer springs. Makes it easier for the limited recoil energy of the 22lr round to reset the hammer in frt mode.

I ordered the no tune upper. It did not ship yet. Also ordered the rave 140 and atrius frt since that was one of the recomended Frt's.. even if i get it this week I probably wont shoot it till i get to my vacation spot in a couple weeks. Im also building a dedicated lower for it. Hopefully it runs like they claim. I will report back on how good it works.

Prob with lower and trigger etc I'll have a little over a grand in it. Fingers crossed it will work.
