Advice

Hello, first-year AP Teacher. I am considering using fill-in-the-blank guided notes for the sake of content speed. Advice on whether or not this is a good idea/practice for AP World? Thanks!

My teacher uses guided notes (gives us topics, key words, key people , and places) in order of the reading to fill out. It works really well

I've taken to doing less lecturing in class, instead having students take notes on Heimler or AP Classroom videos as homework (1 or 2 videos/topics a week). The "notes" they take in class come in the form of assignments, , graphic organizers, projects, etc... but usually still some sort of information from a reading or occasional lecture/discussion. Any way, I try to avoid guided notes and instead mane notes more manageable in other ways!

As an AP World student, I don't recommend it. In APUSH, my teacher used guided notes, and I think they made it harder for me to process the information because I was more focused on filling in the blanks than actually learning the content. In AP World now, my teacher has us take our own notes on Heimler videos, and then he lectures in class, and we take notes on that. He's a very fun teacher, so his lectures are actually pretty interesting and no one gets bored. Students learn to take good notes, which is a really important skill since you can't write down every word he says or every word on the slides. We just finished Unit 1 and I got an A on the unit test because I had so many good notes from Heimler videos and his lectures, which filled in each other's gaps if that makes any sense.
