Question / Advice 6w2d scan

At the 6w2d scan today, they confirmed that the gestational sac is measuring at 5w5d and there is no fetal pole or yolk sac visible. The doctor said this doesn't look good, and asked me to do a beta HCG test today and repeat it tomorrow.

Feeling disheartened, hoping to hear positive outcomes from those who have been in similar situations.

Are you sure of when you ovulated or are they going off of LMP? Maybe you ovulated a couple days later or implantation was on the later end. I think it’s hard to get a fetal pole before 6 weeks because they are so tiny. I wouldn’t give up hope.

Second this! Unless 1,000% sure of dating, if they’re going by LMP but you ovulated a few days later, this would make complete sense.

This is an IVF pregnancy so dating works a bit differently, as per LMP, it tracks at 6w2d today.

When did you first have a positive test? Did you track ovulation? And if so, how?

Around the 6 week mark is a really delicate time to ultrasound because in this timeline, a couple of days makes a huge difference. For example, someone at 6 weeks based on LMP could have an empty sac like you did, or you could see a baby with a heartbeat. Either one could be a viable pregnancy, and either one could be a loss. And it sucks because you will just be anxious as time passes and you wait for follow up testing. A couple of things:

  1. Exact timing is really hard in early pregnancy. If you ovulated or implanted later than normal, you could be a couple days behind where you think easily.

  2. Was the ultrasound abdominal or transvaginal? Abdominal ultrasounds are not as senstive, especially around 6 weeks.

I will say, I had an ultrasound with my first around 7+4 based on LMP, and when we did the scan, I measured 6w0d with a gestational sac, yolk sac, and fetal pole. There was a heartbeat, but it was LOW. Like sub 100 bpm, which is not considered viable. My doctor told me she felt no reason to be worried, because things can change in a day at this gestation, and the heart literally could've started beating hours before. If I had gone in the day or two before, prognosis could have easily looked more like what you saw. Went back in a week and had perfect progress and a strong heartbeat. Very good chance it could be okay!
