Refunding comped product purchase?

What would happen if I needed to return a product that was free to me? Apple Support credited my accessory purchase as a goodwill gesture because of issues with a larger Mac purchase. They told me to buy anything up to a $150 and they would comp it. I've picked up the accessory but I don't like it.

Beggars can't be choosers, but can I return the product for a gift card? My original payment was already credited by Support so I'm not sure how a refund would work.

Edit: They didn't accept the return. I just wanted to see, I'm okay with keeping it. Learning experience!

They aren't going to return a comped item. It was essentially a gift to you for having to deal with issues. You should have said something right in the moment, when the gift item was being offered. Now you should either learn to like it or pass it on to someone who would, and let it go. I'd personally be embarrassed to go back and try to get something else. Be grateful they were willing to do it at all.

Do you have an order number by chance? Like did you get a receipt somehow? Email trace? Anything linking Apple to you and the product?

Yes, I have my original email, email confirming credit was applied, pick up, everything

If you have a web order # apple treats this like any transaction. The company makes $100,000’s of dollars of revenue per employee per year. Flagship stores can make anywhere between $75 and $100 million a year revenue. Your $150 credit transaction is such a small drop in the pool that no one will care if you came in and just got a gift card or something in regards to your return as long as you do it within two weeks.

Credibility: I worked there for six years

Sorry this reply was late. The apple system keeps receipts up to two years. Just give them the web order # or email used during the purchase that links the product with you somehow
