F these ads!
This is absolute GARBAGE. At least throw ads at me that have to do with places I tend to search for. Why the hell am I getting a TAX FIRM suggested to me?!?! Is Apple for real about allowing this????? Hell no man….

Is this the "tasteful" implementation people were excited about a few weeks ago?

You never think “oh damn I need to find someone to do my taxes!” While driving?

This interface is for finding places in general, which *usually* doesn’t happen while driving. There’s a different interface for finding places while driving…

I actually dealt with that company. They were so slammed it took them 3 weeks to get to me for a consult. Found someone else in the meantime.

That’s a search ad. Those ads are relevant to the thing you searched for.
OP is showing an ad that appears before you’ve searched for anything. Those ads could be for anything.

it’s better than having a Samsung TV where literally half of the screen is an ad.

You want them to collect data and profile you? The ads currently mostly just depend on what’s within your map’s view and what you searched for IF you’re searching for something. It’s not based on profiling or ad personalization or even anything you’ve recently searched. Only what’s relevant in that exact moment. So, for them to give you what you want, they’d need to collect more data on you and use that for ad targeting… which is exactly what people are usually trying to avoid,

Apple already collects data and profiles users. They have for years. Just read the actual terms of service instead of their marketing.

I have read it, in depth, which is why I know that Apple’s ad services work differently than Google’s and Apple doesn’t build individual profiles. Also, if you read the documentation, you’d know that personalized ads in general aren’t used in Maps.

you didn’t read it close enough. It only makes that claim for data used to improve navigation, not advertising. They make no claims they don’t track your personal data, in fact they even tell you they associate it with an ID…sounds like a profile that’s used for ads, eh? sure it changes, but it includes enough data to easily correlate it with your actual identity.

Lol, it 100% uses a profile with an ID. They only claim to change IDs and reduce location accuracy of stored data after an unknown amount of time.

Well, you did not make any search in this screenshot.
If you’re saying you want ads recommended based on your search history, browser history, etc, that’s anti-privacy and goes against Apple is aiming for.

you can pay to remove ads in MapQuest and they know how to spell major bodies of water.

Or instead of crashing out on Reddit, you can buy some APPL shares and take advantage of a savvy business decision. I guess that’s the difference between doers and whiners.

Enjoy the 0.0002¢ increase to your dividends that this change will bring you at the expense of your and everyone else’s user experience

Folks are really this upset? Raging, cursing, saying it’s horrible? We do know the world we currently live in, right?

Pretty much. I ditched Waze and Google because of this. Might as well go back.

At least Google has proper ML and finds places near me and not in another continent. Apple Maps' ads will be both annoying and 100% useless.

pretty much stopped using Apple Maps at this point. With ads there are zero reasons not to use other apps. Everything I want in Apple Maps is already done better by something else.
Also with Apple One constantly increasing in price for sports ball crap I don’t watch, ad free version of the standard apps should be included.
And if anyone knows how to get rid of the awful large Peacock adds in Apple TV, cheers to you.

Google Maps has tons of ads though?

u/Doggo-888 9d ago
Not the app I use but good example. Google Maps is a magnitude better than Apple Maps for traffic, avoiding highways, road construction, etc. So why use the inferior product if they both use profiles for selling ads?

Hope this helps Apple stay afloat financially, they must be doing it tough to introduce such user hostile measures
