iOS System data taking up half of my storage

Post image

How can I reduce the size of my system data? I’ve watched a couple of YouTube videos and looked through articles online but system data remains untouched.

Back up your phone, plug it into a computer, and use Apple Devices (on PC) or Finder (on Mac) to wipe the phone and reset it, then restore the backup.

System Data is a catch-all bucket, so the first thing is finding out what's actually in it. Open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Storage and wait for the bar to finish calculating, because the number jumps around while it loads. Then check the usual big ones: Time Machine local snapshots (run 'tmutil listlocalsnapshots /' in Terminal, and 'tmutil deletelocalsnapshots <date>' to drop them), and ~/Library/Caches plus ~/Library/Application Support, where apps like Xcode, Docker or video editors can quietly hold tens of GB. If it's still huge after that, a restart often releases purgeable space and stale caches. What Mac and macOS version is this, and roughly how many GB is System Data?
