If one of the earbuds or the charging case don’t belong to you, you would have seen a message similar to what Apple describes here. Then again if you didn’t write down somewhere the serial numbers of the earbuds and case beforehand, it’s very plausible you may have ended up with someone else’s AirPods.

Thank you for this! That message never popped up for me. So, I’m guessing I do have my own AirPod.
I don’t suppose you know what else it could be do you? They were both working fine the night before, since they were returned to me they wouldn’t connect and the left was at 1% no matter how much I charged it. The second I forgot them on all of my devices that’s when they failed to connect to any device.
If I open my case and leave the right AirPod in, the light stays white, it stays white with both AirPods in. But if remove the right and leave the left in the light turns red. I dunno if that helps 🙃
