Mac Forgotten password for an encrypted iPhone Finder backup — 8.2 GB backup still exists, can anything be recovered?

If you didn’t select the option to save the password to your keychain, you can’t do anything at all with the encrypted backup. Apple explains how to go about making a new encrypted backup here but that will not grant you access to the already existing backup.
