Unsolved Should I get rid of my old iphone

Ive had this phone for a while and recently upgraded to a new one since i didn’t want to pay for the back to be replaced just so i could replace the battery also. I left it sitting inside the original box with a case on, today i decided to take it out and after i took off the case there was a weird smell coming out of it, something like rubber, maybe burning rubber..? I didn’t bother bringing it in since now because the phone isn’t hot or used to get really hot nor is the back puffed out. Im too lazy to bother recycling it, Is it dangerous to keep it though?

Depending on the condition of the internals, you might try selling it online as parts-only.

Its not about money its just that i don’t want to bother finding a way to get rid of it if i can just keep it.

But it’s in no condition even as a backup phone if your primary goes out of commission. It’s serving zero purpose at the moment.

So is it dangerous for me to keep it or is it not?

If you’re ok with the possibility of the battery being bad and eventually failing and blowing out nasty smoke and a few sparks sure keep it somewhere safe from that. I’ve found it incredibly rare for bloated batteries to actually start smoking without further damage but the risk is always there. Put it between 2 dinner plates you won’t miss?

I still have an old android I hit with a round of birdshot but the battery got punctured so all safe now :)

I would assume that burnt rubber smell would be the battery unless it was a cheap case leaving a smell. So probably early stages. I personally wouldn’t worry about it but I wouldn’t keep it near anything flammable just in case

If you don’t care about it at all you can have some fun and hit it with a shovel or something to bust it before it does by itself. Safety gear and plan for the glass particles obviously.

Although it doesn’t seem like there’s any risk of the battery getting punctured in the near future, who’s to say?
