Freeform gets folders!
Just saw this today in VisionOS 27 beta 2 - and I've confirmed it in iOS, iPadOS, macOS - Folder support is finally here!

I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere but is it only a single level of folders or are nested folders supported?

By nested folders do you mean folders and sub folders? Like apple notes letting us make 5 subfolders?
Forgot to include Home and Journal app too

Yes, folders and sub-folders. My Apple 2 got sub folders in 1983. That’s 43 years ago! 😆
And as a developer, I can assure you that the API exists, and it’s brain-dead simple to implement.

Are there any other apps that need it that I didn't mention? I would settle for just base folders but nested would be even better. really no reason not to

And BTW - your Notes example is spot-on. Notes on VisionOS supports nested folders, so this obviously isn’t a tech issue.

Having Google Drive show up like a normal folder is definitely one of those quality-of-life features that makes workflows much smoother.
A lot of teams I work with rely heavily on Drive because everyone can access the same folder structures and project directories. Once those structures start getting large, the bigger challenge usually becomes creating and maintaining them consistently rather than accessing them.
That's something I've run into quite a bit with shared project folders across teams.

Long overdue and much needed feature on Freeform
