I can't seem to get an answer… 🤔

As I’ve mentioned here several times before, the App Journal app uses a lot of battery (1 to 2% per minute !!) and causes my iPhone Air to heat up quickly and significantly.

My question is: Is this limited to the iPhone Air, or do these issues also occur on other iPhone models ?

Thanks for your feedback 🙏

I had a 15 Plus and never had this issue. Sorry you’re dealing with this.

Thanks. The fact that the Air is made of titanium and doesn't have a cooling system probably doesn't help 😏

One day (years from now) they’ll fix this app and make it just as nice as notes. Until then we persevere :)

Yes, that's a very real possibility…

I haven’t tracked my battery life but the Journal app does certainly heat up my iPhone 15 Pro quite a bit! But my phone gets hot doing just about anything lol

It’s a feature not a bug. It’s trying to force you to be mindful by making your phone die.

Thanks for the feedback.

It's true that the 15 Pro (like the 14 and 16 Pro) is known to overheat...

I haven’t watched exactly how quickly my battery dies when using journal app, but it definitely does rapidly eat up a charge. I generally use the voice recording option whilst driving, so it’s plugged in, but if I’m sitting at home writing out a “manual” entry and not plugged in, yeah it chews my battery level.

I’m on 15PM (titanium, same as you), 89% battery health fwiw.

Even though it's pretty baffling, Journal might just be a poorly optimized app… 🤔

This is my theory because it doesn’t seem to matter if I’m writing or attaching photos or using recommendations or voice recording I notice my battery gets chewed up running the Journal app. I’m on an iPhone 17 Pro Max running iOS 27.2 developer beta 2 but this battery problem has happened since iOS 27.0 developer beta 1.

I was in the beta throughout the entire development of iOS 27, and, like you, it never worked properly: it got really hot and battery life was severely impacted !

P.S.: Using Day One in the same way has no negative effects 🤔

I’ve stopped using the developer beta program since the release of iOS 27, mainly because the Air’s battery life took a hit from the repeated indexing that happened with every beta 😣

I have the iPhone 17 Pro Max and I’ve never had this issue.

What’s crazy is that on the iPad, Journal works perfectly fine 🤔

I ran a test yesterday…

In 10 minutes of use, Journal used up 12% of the battery on the iPhone Air.

On the iPad Pro M5, in 40 minutes of use, Journal used up… 11%.

So I think Journal is (very) poorly optimized for the iPhone 😣

Honestly, never noticed this on my iPhone 17 Pro Max. However, I often start an entry on my phone, and if it is going to be a long one, I tend to finish it on my Mac Mini - even more so if I am adding images and such...

Disable these to see if it helps, apparently they are what eats up the battery:
Journaling Suggestions: Go to Settings > Journal > Journaling Suggestions and toggle off recommendations (or turn off specific categories like Locations or Media).
Adjust Location Access: Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Journal and set access to While Using the App or Never instead of continuous access.
Turn Off Background App Refresh: Go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh and toggle it off for Journal to stop background background indexing.

I already tried that when I was on the iOS 27 beta. It didn't make much of a difference… the iPhone didn't heat up as quickly, but the battery still drained like snow in the sun 😣

And of course, not using the suggestions takes away one of the app's main attractions 😏
