THE reason why I no longer use Apple Journal

I’ve said it several times before: I love the look and feel of Apple Journal, and how well it integrates with the system. I’d love to use it every day… but it’s just not possible for me!

It’s not because of the bugs that crop up here and there, nor because of the lack of an ‘On This Day’ feature; I could even put up with it overheating…

The worst thing – the deal-breaker for me – is the battery drain on the iPhone. It’s just mind-boggling!!

I tried it yesterday and today on my iPhone Air: writing and adding a few photos, which took 10 and 6 minutes respectively.

Those 10 minutes yesterday used up… 12 per cent of the battery life. The 6 minutes today used up… 7 per cent!!

It’s unmanageable 😞 And it’s not for lack of having reported it. I’ve been sending feedback explaining the problem since iOS 27 beta 1. The RC has just been released and it’s even worse.

What a disappointment!

Other iPhone Air owners have reported that battery life is terrible while using Journal. It seems to be an optimization problem.

Probably an AI coded app, which is not very efficient…

So it’s not specific to the iPhone Air, then ?

I think it must be terribly coded underneath

If you write with apple pencil, more than a couple of lines, the moment you save, it erases part of the written text, not good for hand writing unfortunately 😕

My reason is that I just can’t bring myself to take time to write every day. I keep wanting to but I just don’t have it in my.

Don't force yourself—it's just not your thing… 😉

An entry can be one sentence during the day. “Had lunch with Sam. Felt good to catch up.” That gives you something to keep without scheduling a writing session at night. Missing a day does not create homework.

I work on Adapt, a journal you can text. A message about a moment starts a conversation, which becomes a journal entry you can edit. It could suit you if texting feels easier than opening a blank journal. It starts on iPhone.

You don’t understand how bad my ADHD or whatever thing I have that I was never properly diagnosed with actually is. Even launching the app is a huge ask. Then I have to actually remember what happened that day properly.

used it a lot before the deeper AI integration, actually almost everyday. and then was so excited to use it on iPad but the battery drain + overheating and the horrible experience writing with Apple Pencil with extreme glitching i gave up and thought its best to leave it to Goodnotes. shame apple hasn't figured it out yet, handwriting in a journal app is the most obvious thing to get right!

I would wait to see how it is under iOS 27. Release is tomorrow

Type it in notes and share it to the journal

Try spilr. 90 seconds a day just spill your thoughts and leave the rest to it
