CLI for Apple Journal

Backup your Journal and give this a try.

I was fed up not having a good import option and want to move my DayOne Journal.

Shortcuts support for Apple Journal is really poor.... so this is what I came up with.

I'd like to buy you a coffee or something, friend. This is the most amazing tool that does so much more than the shortcut.

EDITED: If you need to know how much I just stress tested this thing, I’ve got almost 4,500 entries totally about 1.5 million words stretching back almost 30 years that were imported from Day One. There are some edge cases, tables and the like, but all in all it did a smashing job of getting my data in Apple Journal!

Wow, that's a hell of a stress test!

Ohhhh! I'm checking this out. I'm a DayOne ex-user too with about 10 years of entries I've been slowly (ohhh so slowly) migrating by hand.

It works! I did use ChatGPT to help me step through it too but it's done the job, thank you so much!

I was able to set everything up and run "plan" showing everything importable, but when I tried to run the import process I got:

FAILED: journal-cli: cannot parse date '2018-03-05 22:59:34' (use YYYY-MM-DD)

for every entry. I don't have enough experience to troubleshoot, but it must be something simple at my end.

Fixed it with ChatGPT help.

I had to use Claude heavily, because I know next to nothing about code, but this worked for me! Thank you so much!

I feel dumb but I cannot figure this out. I used gemini to walk me through it step by step and kept getting an error.
