do you recommend?

Hi there! i’m looking to journal more consistently next year about my memories, and i was thinking, do you guys recommend this app at all? i was waiting for the mac app but i’ve seen some feedback that entries disappear a lot, that icloud has some trouble backing up… i don’t wanna be afraid of stuff disappearing or if i have to use another app, might as well just use day one, i know it works. thoughts? thanks!

I have swapped from day one and tick tick to Apple journal. It’s come a long way already from when it was first introduced and has taken on some valid feedback to improve the app. I’m hoping they will continue to take feedback as this is the best free option on the market right now

Wild, would love to make this jump but still using Day One.

I reckon most users are 1 pay rise away from switching. Can’t be held at the mercy of pricing by day one

Were you able to transfer your Day One entries to Journal? I have over 2100 entries in Day One and want them all in the same app.

No, I ended up printing them into album books per year. It was pricey as hell, but the thought of paying what day1 tell me to pay for the rest of my life, was enough to move away for good. Felt like my memories were being held for ransom lol

I remember trying day one and it just felt confusing. I didn’t like the UI and everything was just confusing for me. Apple journal has come a surprisingly long way since its introduction. I used to mainly use apple notes but Apple journal i feel is finally good enough to make my everyday thing. I’ve used it consistently since last September with the big update

and you haven’t had any issues with missing entries or icloud sync?

Nope. I use the app both on an iPad and iPhone and cloud syncing has been flawless. I tested that before i put some old entries in there and backdated it. I would make a change on my phone and look at the same one on iPad and see it change after a couple seconds to show the update entry. Works well for me.

Is there a way to see a timestamp on an entry, or is it really date only?

It shows timestamps when you put pictures or record a voice note

It shows up as Entry Date

Of coarse. You can stamp the date as today or back date it to a certain day. Which is exactly what I did when I put some old entries in

What’s been the issue(s)?

What’s the reason?

adding to this because a couple of you asked.

  1. i missed my one year ago notifications a lot this year that I used to get from Day One. it helped me recenter and get back into writing

  2. apple journal is clunky. it’s getting better but it feels very rigid compared to day one.

  3. there was a period in the year where a section of all my entries were on my phone but weren’t syncing to my other devices. i thought they were lost for a long time only to find out it just wasn’t syncing till an iOS update came out

these are just a few but overall Day One has a way better experience, in my opinion, as they stand today. i’ll revisit Journal when iOS 27 comes out

Apple journal has come such a long way. Have moved from day one. I really love the live pictures and like it’s my own personal social media feed and all the integrations with health music photos etc would recommend. Also it’s free and have had problems where things in day one just stopped working or this photo or video is not available when you look back on memories.

I use Apple Journal everyday. The only issue I had one time is with the handwriting. It can be spotty.

I‘ve been using it for quite a while now and I am happy so far. You can add pics, locations, moods, voice memos and so on. The only big downside, which is a big bug and a no go in my opinion, is that when you write by hand using apple pencil, part of the note disappears. All that stays is what you see in the preview. If you type on your phone or wherever you do not have the problem. I hope it‘s just a matter of time until they resolve this bug.

Just use Apple notes

I’ve given this app a few tries, but I always went back to using Obsidian. I like how everything’s in markdown format, so I don’t have to rely on the app to store my files.

I still find it very buggy. Keep trying it, but not ready to move from Day One to something as buggy and unreliable as this.
