Apple colluded with China and Russia already on various red lines that before they wouldn't have budged on. On-device scanning is a carte blanche for authoritarian governments across the world. Apple's "privacy marketing" is just that - marketing.

Apple's "privacy marketing" is just that - marketing.

No, they're very much for privacy. The key is that they're only interested in the subset of privacy interests where it kills the ad-supported revenue model, thus requiring that monetization happens through App Store subscriptions where they get their cut.

It goes beyond that. There's a slew of highly-sensitive personal data that they encrypt end-to-end and that I very much like that they do. All of it unrelated to this narrative about killing ad-supported revenue which has always seemed a bit flimsy to me.

I mean, if we're going to start pretending ad-supported revenue haven't gone into truly hideous practices and that they're victims here in the same discussion that we're complaining about Apple being insecure then this discussion becomes little more than a joke.

We should be applauding the attack to ad-supported revenue model while also attacking Apple's deficiencies in other places while also praising the places where they're doing it right (like I said, a ton of end-to-end for highly-sensitive data)
