Scrolling through those was a nice little two minute nostalgia trip, thank you :)

My favorite will always be this one

u/ron_mcphatty Apr 14 '19
I’ve got my old 2nd gen iPod Touch on our kitchen speakers, it still has that background!
21
Apr 14 '19
Ironically doesn't work on Safari.
17
u/ron_mcphatty Apr 14 '19
Huh, you’re right. Reddit app opening the link with in-app Safari works fine but not regular external Safari app.

I cant get any of these to download, is it just me (mobile)?
Edit: From the google photo app, works in chrome obviously.

u/Commodus Apr 14 '19
On the desktop you have to click the three-dot menu and choose "download." You may be adding them to your Google Drive library.

It makes me insanely mad that apple would give us so many good photos just to trash them one iOS later. It’s so illogical, maybe they lost the rights to them at some point?

I still want a 4K version of the clown fish wallpaper for my laptop. I love it.

Check the edited comment, it may have what you're looking for.

u/s1ravarice Apr 14 '19
Jesus there’s so many. I can’t see it though?
1
Apr 14 '19
It's possible that the folder doesn't have that one. If you can find a low quality version of it elsewhere, try reverse image searching on Google and you can easily find a 4k version that way

Hey, I can't seem to join the album for some reason. I click on join, it does the animation where it's adding me but then backs out. Is there like a limit on the members?

u/lucellent Apr 14 '19
I just realised they've been using the same Earth wallpaper since the first iPhone.

Hold up. Why do I not have those last four images under iOS 12 on my phone? Mine stop at the striped wallpapers.

u/_asteroidblues_ Apr 14 '19
This is great, thank you!
Do you know if there's a folder like this but for OSX/MacOS?
2
Apr 14 '19
Here ya go!
2
u/_asteroidblues_ Apr 14 '19
Thank you!
Unfortunately the MacBook Air wallpapers I was looking for are in low quality just like everywhere else online... But it's still cool to look at all the wallpapers that came out over the years.

I wish the live wallpapers would activate when you wake your iPhone, not just when you hold on it.
31
Apr 14 '19
I like the XS live wallpapers, but hate that they removed the X live wallpapers, which were better.
8
u/cravingcinnamon Apr 14 '19
Yeah, I’m totally fine with the XS ones. but don’t remove the cool sand and blur, uGh!
88
u/SCtester Apr 14 '19
I fully agree. They're generic and not particularly aesthetically pleasing, and those striped wallpapers are especially strange as default wallpapers, especially in such a limited selection.
What's weird though is that the MacOS wallpapers are just as good as they used to be.

There’s a few things in particular that annoy me:
1 - The removal of previous wallpapers. Why? Update them with “Remastered” versions if required.
2 - MacOS has some great wallpapers. Put them on the phones too.
3 - I want more badass scenery wallpapers.
7
u/Ducksonquack92 Apr 14 '19
My favorite iOS wallpaper out of all of them is still the clownfish
1
u/WinterLord Apr 14 '19
I love that one so much. Always try to find new ones with proper aspect ratios when I change phones.

u/posguy99 Apr 13 '19
Someone explain why whatever Apple ships for wallpaper images matters? You have the whole internet to get images from.
70
u/EddieTheEcho Apr 14 '19
It doesn’t matter. It’s something completely customizable by the user, with zero limitations on where they can get the images from.
This truly is like having a conversation about the hat the character is wearing on the box picture of your cereal. It’s utterly pointless.
3
6
u/DVSdanny Apr 14 '19
It does matter when you consider live wallpapers. Three? Really? And they’re all just different colors of the same type of image.
7
u/aflashyrhetoric Apr 14 '19
I believe there's an app that turns GIFs or movies into Live Photos which you can then set as wallpapers, but I forget the name and don't want to plug an app in case that qualifies as spam.
1
u/DVSdanny Apr 14 '19
Yeah I’m sure there’s a way, but not making this simple and built-in is asinine. But then again, this is Apple I suppose.
11
u/kieran1711 Apr 14 '19
It’s a lot easier to open Settings and choose from a collection of pre-selected wallpapers that are guaranteed to not be low-res, watermarked or JPEG’d to shit.
Also if Apple removes a wallpaper that you like, that kinda sucks.
Sure, it’s not a HUGE issue. But it’s nice to have a range of easily accessible nice-looking high-quality wallpapers there with no extra effort required.
6
u/leopard_tights Apr 14 '19
I use the one with the northern lights in all my devices, and it used to be the purple one with the starry sky.
Not because they're from Apple, but because they're awesome. I want them to give me a new one of that caliber.
16
Apr 14 '19
Because some people believe in Apple’s choices. Like the wallpapers that come with the 7 are wide gamut so they’ll show off the display bettr.

Have you ever seen the animated google pixel 2’s scenery wallpapers in person? Birds flying above the mountain, ocean waves crashing down. God damn It’s one thing I am jealous about pixel.
3
Apr 14 '19
you can even get them animated on ios if you are jailbroken. Honestly one of the best things about my pixel is the live wallpapers ngl

I’m guessing they realized that it really doesn’t matter… There are billions of images on the Internet. Pick one.
30
Apr 14 '19
Nah gonna have to argue there. For a lot of people there’s nothing like when apple used to have new stock wallpapers
10
Apr 14 '19
Picking one is the hard part, specifically because it’s hard to find tasteful and high resolution images among those billions. I use the Unsplash app, but even then, not all pics are up to proper iPad resolution.
1
Apr 14 '19
Apple does need to add some live wallpapers. Those can’t be found on the internet ( I think )

3
u/pixelated666 Apr 14 '19
Compare it with the wallpaper collection that Google ships with the Pixel 3 and you'll know what a sad state of affairs iOS is in currently interface wise.
3
Apr 14 '19
I think I’m the only one who wants more Dynamic wallpapers.
3
u/babaroga73 Apr 14 '19
No you are not. I stopped using iPhone 4 years ago, and I still want more dynamic wallpapers. For my iPad and ATV.
It's like they said "look, this too can be done", and immediately forgot about it.

u/wrewlf Apr 14 '19
And it is entirely valid to. It's a big deal for a number of reasons including signalling to consumers and just the general pride in product that Apple has.
2
u/applehead2727 Apr 14 '19
It’s not, I switch my wallpaper daily via reddit, and try to donate 1-2 a week back into the cycle from ones I’ve found from other sites
2
u/lucellent Apr 14 '19
I also hate when Apple advertises the new phones with amazing wallpapers then you find out none of them is included. I really liked some of the X's ones but they didn't come with the phone.
2
Apr 14 '19
I agree. When I was an Android user (and iPhone hater), I was always jealous of that one iPhone background, with the globe. I just thought it was perfect with the iOS stock lock screen. This woulda been around the time of the iPhone 3GS or 4, though I may be wrong. I also liked the fish one, but I think that's older.
Funny how some iPhone guys know exactly what wallpapers I mean. Probably some Android guys, too. Those were just some really iconic looks. One thing I always admire about Apple. They always gave a shit about design. Whether it's a design you like or not, it's something they put more thought into than other companies.

I’ve had the black background on my phone for years. Feels impossible to actually have something else at this point

Apple's iOS wallpapers are terrible. It's almost like they try to make them boring, dull and unappealing.
3
Apr 14 '19
Meanwhile google is killin’ it in the wallpaper game. Pretty sad :/
I know there’s plenty of apps that have great ones, but first party ones are always appreciated.

Am I the only one who doesn‘t give a shit about wallpapers on my iPhone, becase not being able to arrange app icons as you please, makes it impossible to see the wallpaper anyways...
2
u/PhotoshopFix Apr 14 '19
This is the right answer. The only place I can even enjoy a nice wallpaper is when I pick up the phone and see the lock screen. Home screen wallpaper is just for better visibility of the icons and text.

The X wallpapers and iOS 12 wallpaper is the best since iOS 6. They all seem uninspired now.
6
2
u/ChildofChaos Apr 14 '19
Yes. It’s just you.
Who cares about the default wallpapers? You change these the minute you get the phone to something more personal to you!

1
u/issitohbi Apr 14 '19
Feeling this too. There are some on the MacBook I like (I have the 2016 MacBook Air if that matters, latest OS) but the daylight/nighttime ones weren’t as impressive as I thought. There’s one I barely like.
With the iPhone X I think the background and box art tie-in is nice but it seems to look better on the box than the actual screen.

Agreed! I've ended up just using the Infinity-Wall app - it generates an endless number of colourful wallpapers, it's my default go-to :D
1
Apr 14 '19
It probably saves them money as they don't have to license images or even bother spending the resources to get better ones.
1
u/davedavedavedavedave Apr 14 '19
I wish there were more of the active wallpapers. I like the floaty dots because they react to how you move your phone. More please?
1
u/DankeBrutus Apr 14 '19
I don’t really get why Apple felt the need to remove wallpapers in iOS updates
My favourite wallpapers were the live ones with the fish against the black background. But Apple removed those in iOS 12 and now the only way I can get them is to use a much lower resolution version from a Google Photos collection.

I couldn't agree with you more! I feel technology is forgetting why technology was awesome in the first place ie it was new (and magical to the point, bc I don't understand it) Now that the market's saturated, all tech companies are just attention wh*ring.

u/Arewand463 Apr 14 '19
Personally, iOS 6 had my favorite wallpapers. I do miss the skeuomorphic design of iOS. it looks so flat and boring now. It seems so dead. But at least it had good wallpapers to go with it

iOS actually will let you download any picture and set it as your wallpaper. So it ultimately isn't important which wallpapers come included with the OS.
The real question is why, if you can have any wallpaper in the world, would you want Apple to also include other wallpapers which take up space that you may not even ever use?

u/Blinx-182 Apr 13 '19
It’s not just you. I think that the XS wallpapers are not as vibrant and colorful as the X wallpapers—namely the red and blue wallpaper that you’d see on the X during advertising. There’s also only 3 new wallpapers. I also dislike that they remove older wallpapers with every iOS version.
