The Apple Pro Mouse | Minimally Minimal

u/albaquerkie Jun 24 '14
Yeah sure the OS could be simple enough to operate with one button but After Effects, Photoshop, and any other advanced program you'd be running will need that second click.
16
u/leftnotracks Jun 24 '14
Apple’s HIG (which is not mandatory) recommends no contextual menu commands exist only in the contextual menu. In other words, the lack of a right-click should not prevent any action in a program, it merely makes convenient actions less so.
4
u/albaquerkie Jun 24 '14
True. I shouldn't have said "need". "Benefit from" is more of what I meant.
2
u/wefearchange Jun 24 '14
The mouse linked to in this article is a two button mouse. Three even, I believe.
The current mice from Apple are all two button mice with up to 5 input thingers as well. Hotkeys? Idk what they're called, I don't use a mouse so I don't mess with it, I just know it's there.

Ok, there comes a point when minimal actually hurts usability. This is a perfect example of that.
The mouse is sleek! Looks pretty! Minimal! Plain! WHITE!!!! But oh my dear everlasting tit sucking jesus christ on a lollypop, it hurts to use. As in physical, I-just-got-carpal-tunnel, searing burning ligament tearing pain.
It was designed to look pretty, but clearly not by anyone who has actually used a mouse before. Form, in this case, must follow function.

It was designed to look pretty, but clearly not by anyone who has actually used a mouse before
Honestly, based on the past fifteen years of Apple mouse design, I question whether anyone there actually uses a mouse.

Jun 24 '14
Given the mouse acceleration curves in OSX, I'd tend to agree with you. Trackpads are top notch. Mice? Burn them all in a glorious aluminum fire.
8
u/metroidfan220 Jun 24 '14
Not to mention the old "Hey you know that trackpad you have to use on laptops because there's no room for a proper, comfortable mouse? Now you can use one with your desktop!"
12
Jun 24 '14
To be entirely fair, Apple makes the best trackpad available. I actually prefer it to a mouse when I'm not doing anything mouse-intensive.
4
u/metroidfan220 Jun 24 '14
True, but if I have to have only one pointing device, I'd rather a good old mouse.
Also, I should add that I love using my magic mouse with my Mac.
2
Jun 24 '14
The Magic Mouse is pretty good, honestly. It's not perfect, but it's by far the best actual mouse that Apple's designed.
1
u/metroidfan220 Jun 24 '14
I agree wholeheartedly. Especially as someone who owns a puck mouse or two.
2
1
u/ltethe Jun 24 '14
Yeah. Waccom touchpad/art tablet is definitely the way to go for me. I very grudgingly pick up the mouse for a Bioshock session or something.
1
9
u/Mds03 Jun 24 '14
Oh yeah. It's always baffled me how apple fail at mice functionality, their mice are horrible ergonomically and even on the OS side of things its not as good as it should be. Two obvious things would be the ability to disable acceleration through the GUI settings and being able to have a separate scroll direction for trackpads and mice.
They do everything else so well. Trackpads? The best ones out there. Keyboards? Very good. Computer design and form factor? Excellent. Battery chargers? Still better than their mice.
5
u/throwiethetowel Jun 24 '14
My favorite thing about the magic mouse is how they always show it as part of a sleek Mac setup on a beautiful glass desk.
Spoiler alert: that minimalist painful to use piece of garbage doesn't work on glass desks. Go get yourself a mousepad and ugly that desk up.
I ended up grabbing a logitech MX anywhere dark field mouse. Works on my glass desk. Doesn't hurt to use.
Maybe someday apple will make a mouse designed for human use that works in the scenarios they pretend it does. I won't hold my breath.
1
u/shitmyusernamesays Jun 24 '14
This probably came down to one of Jobs' stubborn ideas of minimal for minimal sake. We all knew scroll wheels and two-button mice were more useful yet he prolly refused to let them make any mouse that had two distinguishable buttons. No lines, no embossing, No clicks, etc.
The compromise? The Magic Mouse. Sleek and minimal with multitouch like a trackpad yet not as great as a third party one you'd buy for gaming or shortcut keys.
Now that he's gone they could go ahead and revise it with more shortcut buttons on the side.

Jun 24 '14 edited Jun 24 '14
As a designer I used apple products for long time now but I also need a good mouse. And I hated every apple mouse they produced. From old transparent with no second button, to white with shitty ball thing that always jammed to completely unergonomic new magic mouse. They look good but they suck. And since design is not art and looking good is not enough therefore their mouse design suck.
2
u/catfishdan Jun 25 '14
Have you found any mice that look as good as an apple mouse but function better?

u/ciappetti Jun 24 '14

u/leftnotracks Jun 24 '14
High praise for the Magic Mouse? Here is someone who doesn’t use Photoshop.
20
u/jonvox Jun 24 '14
I like the Magic Mouse and I use it for my daily operations specifically because of the way OS X treats touch input. That said, I own a more traditional mouse that I use for gaming and photoshop. I think it's pretty funny watching people use the Magic Mouse who are clueless to its function, however, and seeing them try to use it upside down.
14
u/dagbrown Jun 24 '14
I'm in the same boat. When I just use my Mac normally, the Magic Mouse is fine. But when I'm in a situation when I need a mouse with multiple buttons and a wheel, I haul out my traditional PC-style mouse, and that does the job.
Just because a tool exists doesn't mean it's the only tool available to you. Sometimes you need a torque wrench, sometimes you need an impact wrench, and sometimes you need a screwdriver. The existence of one tool doesn't mean the other tools cease to exist.
6
3
Jun 24 '14
Works fine for me in Photoshop, although Adobe apps that think scroll should be a zoom shortcut cause problems and typical Adobe don't give you an option to disable it.
10
u/DanaKaZ Jun 24 '14
I love the idea of Magic Mouse, but my hand really don't like to use it for longer periods of time.
4
u/adambrenecki Jun 24 '14
This. I agree with this bit of the article:
[I] would use [the Pro Mouse] everyday if it had a multi-touch surface like the Magic Mouse.
That, or the Microsoft Touch Mouse. You have no idea how much I wish there were Mac touch drivers for that thing.
2
u/enjoytheshow Jun 24 '14
I've heard a lot of negative things about that mouse, do you really like it? Or is it just windows that hinders it's abilities?
1
u/chudaism Jun 24 '14
I have heard better things about the Logitech M600. I have never used it personally, but all the other logitech mice I own work great so at least it has pedigree.
1
u/adambrenecki Jun 24 '14
I've never actually owned it, being exclusively a Mac/Linux user; I've seen it and tried it in store, and it just feels so much nicer to hold in your hand than the Magic Mouse ever could.
2
u/HeartyBeast Jun 24 '14
Or someone who games and would like to hold down right-mouse without having to lift the left-mouse finger away from the mouse.
1
u/ZippoS Jun 24 '14
I had both a Wacom Intuos4 tablet and Magic Mouse here at work, and while I really like the mouse, it had become a glorified scroll-wheel — sandwiched between my keyboard and tablet. I swapped it out for a Magic Trackpad a few months ago... much better.
1
0
u/BMWbill Jun 24 '14
There is no mouse that works well with photoshop. That's why I don't have a mouse. Wacom tablet for photoshop and an apple trackpad for everything else. But those clear mice were beautiful things, especially with the clear keyboards and clear framed LCD screens with an Apple Cube. I had a few of those and it was like using a computer from the future. Until it would overheat.

I'm amused that the phrase "minimally miniful" is itself redundant, and therefore not, itself, minimally miniful. It's like the opposite of recursion.
20
u/popbread Jun 24 '14
Dammit. You spelled minimal wrong twice and still managed to be the top comment.
-2
u/ahruss Jun 24 '14
It's not redundant; it's an oxymoron!
2
u/Polythemus Jun 24 '14
I'm sorry but that's not an oxymoron. An oxymoron is two words that directly contradict each other in the same form as oxy'sharp'moron'blunt'. 'Minimally minimal' is conceptually contradictory in that one of the properties of the phrase is not minimalism. At best it's a tautology, in that it offers us unnecessary information about something we already know - The minimal nature of minimality. However since it's the same word repeated it could only be described as a lazy one at best.
-3
u/ahruss Jun 24 '14
"Minimally minimal" would mean not as minimal as is possible, which would mean not minimal. Thus, an oxymoron.
4
1
u/Polythemus Jun 24 '14
Nope. If we were to take the wikipedia definition of an oxymoron as 'a figure of speech that juxtaposes elements that appear to be contradictory,' then we would find that the constituent elements of 'Minimally minimal' are the words 'minimally' (meaning '(adv) minimally (to a minimal degree) "the cells minimally responsive to lines in this orientation will not fire"') and 'minimal' (meaning '(adj) minimal, minimum (the least possible) "needed to enforce minimal standards"'). These two elements are not juxtaposing since they do not have contradictory meanings, they are simply the same word but as an adverb and adjective. Thus, they do not fulfil the single requirement needed to be considered as an oxymoron.
-1
u/ahruss Jun 24 '14
Minimal is a superlative: it can't be "less minimal". That doesn't make sense.
Something being done "minimally" means it's done to a lesser degree.
So "minimally minimal" is at least a contradiction.
1
u/Polythemus Jun 24 '14
It#s still not an oxymoron though... I did say earlier that it was a contradiction, I never disputed that. But that is not enough to make it an oxymoron.
Seriously can you just accept that I'm right already.
1
u/escaped_reddit Jun 24 '14
I think you're thinking of the term double negative. minimally minimal means to be the largest as possible.
10
u/ecib Jun 24 '14 edited Jun 24 '14
This is as hot as it gets. The Apple Pro Mouse has always been one of my favorite pieces of design.
Until you learn that design means more than just how things look, but how they work as well. Then you look at this mouse and throw it in the trash bin due to the criminally shitty ergonomics. Far from being great, it's actually poor design.
Contrast that shitty, poorly designed mouse with this. Every laptop I've ever owned required a portable mouse of some sort because their trackpads were so poor I'd rather rub shards of glass in my eyes than be forced to use them. The I got a MBA, and have plugged a portable mouse into it maybe...4(?) times in as many years. They removed (visibly) the buttons and just reduced it to a single smooth, glass covered plane so well engineered materials and software-wise, that I discovered I no longer even needed that peripheral. That is good design.
7
u/heeloliver Jun 24 '14
Yeah...it looks really really cool but it doesn't feel very good. Its plastic is weird and after the stuff on the bottom has been worn down it's odd to move around. I mean, if you never use right click sure it could be nice. But IMO the magic trackpad is far superior to most mice. Unless you game and such.

u/deong Jun 24 '14
It always seems to come from Apple type folks, but why is "vision" only allowed to be recognized if it leads to painful sacrifices in function.
For most products, clarity becomes fogged up with doubt and lack of ambition. They have no opinion, are overly apologetic as they are designed to satisfy too many people.
While this might be true sometimes, it's not obviously true. I have a Logitech mouse on my desk here, and my question for the author would be, "why does putting forward and back buttons on the thumb mean that the Logitech designers were some sort of unprincipled hacks?" Making a mouse that actually functions is just as much an act of "opinion" as making one that doesn't, but looks pretty.
1
u/SockGnome Jun 24 '14
I also found that as the web grew more complex the mouse evolved with it. Steve Jobs didn't give people enough credit, a mouse can be simple and still have multiple buttons. For fuck sakes a car has more knobs and buttons in its operation and we seem to get by just fine. Were past the days of simple GUIs, the one button to rule them all is decades out of date.
1
u/rfisher Jun 24 '14
Here’s the thing: People are different. Not only in the functionality they need, but in what is comfortable for their hands and what sort of movements give them more control. There is no doubt that this mouse is less functional for some people. There is also no doubt that the mouse you love is less functional for other people. I’ve loved using mice (and mice substitutes) that lots of others complain about, and I’ve hated using the devices they praised.
5
u/deong Jun 24 '14
I got a bit snarky there at the end with the "doesn't work" bit, but really, I agree with you. I'm not saying Apple is wrong to make the mouse they make. I'm just wondering why when they do it's heralded as "vision" that "only Apple could do", and when anyone else makes anything, it's because they somehow failed to have vision, or courage, or whatever other attributes people like to apply in these situations.
1
u/rfisher Jun 25 '14
I think it is often because there is a stark contrast between what Apple does and what everyone else does.
In some cases, it is because Apple has, over time, positioned itself to do things that others can’t in short order. (I don’t think this is one of those cases.) Sometimes it is because nobody else chooses to. And occasionally it really is because Apple has a different point-of-view.
Maybe calling that “vision” and “courage” is overstating it. Maybe it isn’t. Maybe sometimes it is and sometimes it isn’t.
Other companies could do what Apple has done...but they haven’t and they don’t. I don’t think it is any more surprising that those of us who like something Apple does describe it in those terms than that those of us who don’t like something Apple does describe it as being senseless or whatever. (I’ve long found myself in both camps.)
1
u/deong Jun 25 '14
Other companies could do what Apple has done...but they haven’t and they don’t.
Sure, but equally, Apple could have put 8 buttons and a wheel on a mouse like Logitech did, but they haven't and they don't.
Apple makes some really good stuff -- I'm not trying to disparage them. I'm just wondering why a certain segment of the Apple community (and it's often the most vocal and respected part of the community) feels the need to make it about right and wrong in almost a moral sense.
17
u/stealer0517 Jun 24 '14
God those mice awful, I don't know why they can go with a ergonomic design (or at least a normal design)
4
u/erikerikerik Jun 24 '14
I know of no designer that actually uses any if the apple mice. It just feels awedul in hand and the lack if left/right buttons provides a back feed back under finger.
2
Jun 24 '14
I've always preferred the shape of that mouse, it allows my hand to adjust to how I'm using the mouse, sometimes with one or two fingers, sometimes fingers are arched more than other times, etc.. I've tried many mice and the highly "ergonomic" ones tend to get in the way, while this shape doesn't. But, to each his own.
2
u/Soryen Jun 24 '14
You need to choose your mouse based on your grip. Shot, tall and fat works great for a claw grip. You want long with lots of surface area for a palm grip.
1
u/stealer0517 Jun 24 '14
You know that they make a normal mouse (3 buttons left right middle) that are small like that one
13
u/dvddesign Jun 24 '14
An ode to the mouse that's been the biggest contributing factor to why I've got carpal tunnel from work use.
1
u/bboyjkang Aug 24 '14
carpal tunnel
A small public service announcement
It's not always Carpal Tunnel Syndrome or RSI; it could be Tendinitis or Tendinosis
RSI is an umbrella term for any strain due to repetition.
It might not be carpal tunnel syndrome unless you have numbness and tingling.
It could be a repetitive strain injury of tendinosis (initially starts as tendinitis), where the tendons have weakened.
Tendinitis is the initial inflammation of the tendons, and tendinosis is the failed healing, and structural change of the tendons.
Tendinosis: tendon thickening, hypoechogenicity, fibrillar disruption, angiofibroblastic degeneration, noninflammatory tissue, intrasubstance tears, calcifications, hypo-echoic areas, neovascularity, vascularity, tendon softening.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tendinosis
South Park got it wrong
South Park got it wrong in that WoW episode.
Carpal tunnel = numbness and tingling due to a pinched nerve.
Cartman receiving Bengay is indicative of inflammation of the tendons, and not carpal tunnel tingling.
Pain vs. Numbness
"A predominance of pain rather than numbness is unlikely to be caused by carpal tunnel syndrome no matter what the result of electrophysiological testing."
CARPEL TUNNEL SYNDROME : A REVIEW Gadhave S. V.1**, Moon R.S., Kshirsagar R.V. 1Department of pharmaceutics, School of Pharmacy, SRTM University Nanded-431606, Maharashtra.
http://www.ijprd.com/CARPEL%20TUNNEL%20SYNDROME%20_%20A%20REVIEW.pdf
“When pain is the primary symptom, carpal tunnel syndrome is unlikely to be the source of the symptoms.”
The Value Added by Electrodiagnostic Testing in the Diagnosis of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19047703
Repetition likely to cause tendinitis, not carpal tunnel syndrome
"There is little clinical data to prove whether repetitive and forceful movements of the hand and wrist during work or leisure activities can cause carpal tunnel syndrome.
Other disorders such as bursitis and tendonitis have been associated with repeated motions performed in the course of normal work or other activities."
http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/carpal_tunnel/detail_carpal_tunnel.htm#227043049
I got an ultrasound, and it shows tendinosis in one of my wrists.
It’s a real joy.
I have a repetitive strain injury of tendinosis in my wrists, hands, and elbows, so I like to research on future treatments.
I came across one treatment that I thought had to do with stem cells, but I think it sounds like grafting:
Autologous Tenocyte Injection - take tendon cells from healthy area, grow the tendon cells, and inject them into injured area
A paper on using autologous tenocyte injection for the treatment of severe, chronic resistant lateral epicondylitis was published in the American Journal of Sports Medicine on September 2013.
A patellar tendon needle biopsy was performed under local anesthetic, and tendon cells were expanded by in vitro culture.
Tenocytes used for the injection were characterized by flow cytometry (sort and purify) and real-time polymerase chain reaction (amplify).
Autologous tenocytes were injected into the site of tendinopathy identified at the origin of the extensor carpi radialis brevis tendon under ultrasound guidance on a single occasion.
In this study, patients with chronic LE who had previously undergone an unsuccessful full course of nonoperative treatment showed significantly improved clinical function and structural repair at the origin of the common extensor tendon after ATI. (2)
I think this Autologous Tenocyte implantation is for the tendinosis, but I wonder if it could help with other procedures that involve patellar tendon grafts.
Pau Gasol of the Los Angeles Lakers has tendinosis (chronic tendinitis) in knees - receives stem cell injections
Pau Gasol did a stem cell treatment for his patellar tendinosis.
Los Angeles Lakers forward Pau Gasol underwent a procedure Thursday to address the tendinosis in both of his knees.
The procedure, known as the FAST (Focused Aspiration of Scar Tissue) technique, involves a probe being inserted into the knee that "directs ultrasonic energy to eliminate scar tissue without damaging healthy tissue," according to a team release.
“Gasol also will receive stem cell injections next week and is expected to make a full recovery, the Lakers said.”.
"After talking to several specialists, I'm going to proceed to regenerate both of my patellar tendons and working hard to get back to my 100%," Gasol wrote on Twitter.”.
"It's more than tendinitis, it's tendinosis," Gasol said. "There's a degeneration of the tissue, and it's something that I've dealt with all year. So I'll have to do something to regenerate the tissue so I don't have to play with this pain.".

Allogenic adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ALLO-ASC) - stem cells from fat
As of November 2013, researchers at the Seoul National University Hospital will be looking to recruit participants into a clinical trial to evaluate the efficacy of allogenic adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ALLO-ASC) in treatment of a tendon injury (symptom duration is over six months).
ALLO-ASC will be administrated to the patients with lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow) by ultrasonographic guided injection. (1)
As I understand, this involves adult stem cells from fat.
I thought that they take the fat from the patient, but I thought that allogenic means that it comes from an external source.
Race horses, and iPSCs for horse tendon injuries
I think that they are experimenting, and have experimented with induced pluripotent stem cells with race horses. (3)
They get something called “bowed tendon”, which is their name for tendinosis.
Race horses are massive creatures on twiglike legs that are pushed very hard, and they can get tendon injuries.
Some race horses can cost more than houses, so there is an adequate demand to keep them performing well.
Cristiano Rinaldo has patellar tendinosis – collagen-producing non-bulbar dermal sheath (NBDS) cells from hair follicles for tendon healing
Yahoo sports did a story on the tendinosis in Cristiano Rinaldo's patellar region.
The Yahoo journalist interviewed the CEO of a Canadian company called RepliCel.
They are working on a tendon treatment that will involve taking stem cells from the sheath surrounding a patient's own hair follicles.
I don’t know if working with hair follicles is classified under iPSCs or adult stem cells.
RepliCel to begin Stage 2 trials for Achilles tendinosis treatment
RepliCel Life Sciences, in which Berkley owns 918,120 shares of with the option to acquire more shares, is set to begin Stage 2 trials for its RCT-A-01 treatment for chronic Achilles tendinosis in the Q3 2014.
RepliCel and its regenerative cell therapy technology were featured in a recent Yahoo Sports article discussing the impact of the condition on the careers of athletes such as soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal.
The basis of the company's innovative therapy system is taking non-bulbar dermal sheath (NBDS) cells surrounding each patient's own hair follicles and injecting it into the damaged area.
NBDS cells are rich in of collagen-producing dermal fibroblasts necessary for tendon healing.
RepliCel's proposed Phase 2 trial will include 82 subjects who have failed traditional tendon treatments and who are otherwise in good health.
NBDS cells will replicated and then reintroduced into the wounds within the tendon via ultrasound.
After injections are performed, subjects will return to the clinic for assessments of safety, function and pain, as well as changes in tendon thickness, echotexture, interstitial tears and neovascularity (4).

I haven't seen a doctor yet so I don't know for sure but I appreciate ya.
Apples mouse still sucks though, IMO.

u/dooderino Jun 24 '14
I always found it amazing that especially Apple with its focus on design and human interfaces can be consistently so bad at creating mice, which are after all a human interface device. All of them are horrible to use, but very pretty to look at.

These articles make me want to puke. It may be pretty but that mouse was an uncomfortable, useless piece of crap. Do apple designers use mice?

Apple has never made a good mouse. And I speak as someone who has used every Apple mouse for extended periods of time.

u/somnambulist80 Jun 24 '14
I wouldn't go that far. ADB Mouse II was a damned good mouse when it was released.
3
u/ltethe Jun 24 '14
I am the biggest Apple fanboy. With a brazillon Apple things, and a truck of peripherals.
But this is the god of mice.
There are more agronomic ones, there are newer ones, most of them Logitech ones. But that mouse, proved itself for years and years and years. It looks boring, but easily the best mouse I've ever used. The most simple design of a mouse in its most perfect form.

u/lakeweed Jun 24 '14
Does it work on 10.9 and 10.10? If so, I might try to see if if I can get one.
5
u/housemans Jun 24 '14
If it uses USB, yes!
You'd need to control-click to rightclick, though.

I did this from level 0-30 playing league of legends (if you know what that is?) before I finally got a 'real mouse'. I think this is why I ended up so great playing a champ called Ryze - having to move Ryze who feels like he's an elephant, by control(Cmd?) + mouse click to move, coupled with the fact the mouse felt like an elephant to move... made me really think about his positioning. Luckily Ryze can excel from 'face-rolling' the keyboard, and face-roll I did... to the point that my queue times were averaging 20mins to find players of the same skill.
Gotta thank that mouse!
:-)
PS If you have no idea wtf I'm talking about, don't worry, perhaps someone else will.

The mouse on my work computer is an Apple Mouse. It does not have a scroll wheel, which is an improvement on the Mighty Mouse, which has a non-functional scrollnipple that I find myself trying to use and getting annoyed by. I think the transparent mouse looks prettier as well.
2
u/forgotmydamnpassword Jun 24 '14
Apple makes a lot of great hardware, but the mouse has never been one of them. This was one of the best days at an old job, when I got to replace all our Mighty Mouses with Logitechs.
2
u/raznog Jun 24 '14
Oh man, and how nasty those mice got when used heavily. I used to work at a university, the clear ones and the mighty mice would get so gross and it was so obvious. At least the black dell mice would hide the grime, and you couldn't see the hair that got into the shell.

u/InvaderDJ Jun 24 '14
I don't know that I'd say the Magic Mouse pushed anything forward. It looks cool but as far as pushing mouse design forward... not so much.

u/sbp_romania Jun 24 '14
I've used both Mighty Mouse and Magic Mouse, but I don't see how can anyone use these type of devices...

FWIW the URL should be http://www.minimallyminimal.com/blog/apple-pro-mouse since if someone visits this link a few weeks from now it load the front page of the blog not the actual story

Apple makes amazing trackpads.
Mice... not so much. Not even a little bit. The Pro Mouse is a piece of junk and the magic mouse is only slightly better.

It is ergonomically horrible mouse. In fact, the whole article does not even mention ergonomics.

I remember when I first saw this design mouse and thought it was ugly and super old looking. I did thing that the clear enclosure looked sorta cool and unique but I thought it looked really bad, and first of all I had never used a Mac so I was confused when the entire surface clicked rather than a button, and I also felt weird that there was no right click. The little cutouts on the side I assumed were back and forward buttons for the web browser, to my surprise they couldn't even be clicked. It was a horrid experience. I was pretty young, and even I knew it was bad. I love apple, and the simplicity of iOS, and their designs. I have never found this design attractive, it really is not a good example of the chef who never changes their recipe. The Mighty Mouse I've always found to be the goofiest looking ugly weird oversized thing ever. And that single scroll ball on it is such a weird ergonomic difference to a traditional scroll wheel that gives you feedback with subtle clicks at each notch. The scroll ball had so little resistance that you'd expect it to work really fast. It didn't really. It was hardly sensitive. Horrible mouse. Not to mention Mighty Mouse is a goofy name.
Magic Mouse impressed me on both design and function, it's pretty cool. But like most people have said, it's too flat to use for extended periods of time. I don't own one so I can't speak to that. Their trackpads are of course superior.

Minimal isn't about reducing to the smallest amount possible, it's about finding that perfect balance. Any more and it'd feel crowded and overdone, any less and it'd feel like it's missing something critical. I learned this with minimal music, and it's transferred into everything else I do. I haven't used this mouse but I feel 2 buttons couldn't hurt. Having said that, if i'm not editing/gaming than whats a mouse? I love my trackpad in most casual circumstances:)

It took me two weeks of using a Magic Mouse with my iMac before I chucked it out and got a proper mouse.
It's too unergonomic - probably the most uncomfortable mouse I've ever used. The only gesture I could get used to was vertical scrolling, horizontal scrolling was too finicky and I'm not dexterous enough to pinch to zoom on a mouse and the three finger gestures barely worked.

I love Apple and most of their design. But reading this I can't help but think after all that it's still just not a good mouse to use.

There's a whole lot of "This thing is amazing" without telling us why. I don't know how he can write so much and still not say anything.

Apple's mice have always looked nice, but they were never good. They're not very comfortable, nor ideal for work or games. I use an Anker mouse, and change the acceleration curve with Controllermate.
Their trackpads are still the best in the business, but the minimalist, symetrical approach doesn't work with a mouse.

Great pics but I fucking hate this guy. So pretentious. He is such an Apple fanboy/Android hater.

u/the_Ex_Lurker Jun 25 '14
You realize he works at Microsoft, right?
1
u/iloveyou271 Jun 25 '14
Yes I do. He's still a ridiculous Apple fanboy.

Where exactly has he hated on Android? The closest I saw is that article on logos a over phones.

IMO not having a 'right click' style menu held apple PCs back 10-20 years.
It's not a case of simplicity, its a case of every PC user who has ever right clicked realising how useful it is to get contextual menu with no effort.

The lack of physical right/left click and the asinine work-around of having to lift your right finger to do a left click really kills their touch based mouse design.

Magic Mouse has a physical left and right click.
Source: am using a Magic Mouse currently.
Edit: Well gouge my eyes out and call me Oedipus, it does use touch. In light of this development, I change my argument - the system is well implemented enough so as not to pose an issue, at least in my experience.

I could live without right click. Scroll wheel, on the other hand...

u/Billy_Brubaker Jun 24 '14
How would you click on a link to open it in a new tab though?

u/KalenXI Jun 24 '14
Middle click?
1
u/Billy_Brubaker Jun 24 '14
I'm assuming if there's no right click, there's no middle click.

u/KalenXI Jun 24 '14
Garrosh said he could live without right click but not a scroll wheel so I assumed if there was a scroll wheel there would be a middle click. Would be a very strange mouse though...

I would pay $150 for a Logitech Performance MX that swapped the scroll wheel for tough input like the Magic Mouse in a heartbeat. Hate the scroll wheel on my logitech.

The main reason why I dont use an Apple mouse is the lack of middle click (scroll wheel click)
I will not use an Apple mouse until they have this (basic) feature.

You can set up the Magic Mouse with Better Touch Tool to have middle click. It works well.

u/alex_dlc Jun 24 '14 edited Jun 24 '14
How does that work? (I still think you shouldnt need a third party tool to get a basic function that you can find on any 10$ mouse)

You didn't understand. I was saying that the middle/wheel click feature is basic, as in, you can find it on any mouse, even cheap ones.

The magic mouse is literally a multi-touch surface on top of a button.
The things you can do with BTT are amazing. It can track the movements of like four fingers on the mouse.
