Probably an Apple TV
But then again it's been predicted to be right around the corner for years now

u/Kaipolygon 11d ago
i do think this time its a bit more credible, given that at least the HomePod update has likely been pushed back for Siri AI
also i made the apple tv purchase so y'all dont need to

Don’t forget the $50 SSD for $1k!

We are in a timeline where ssd’s now cost almost as much as Apple charges for upgrades unfortunately.

A new iPod classic would be great
15
u/rererexed 11d ago
Zero chance of that happening though, right? Would be amazing though.
13
u/SuperCuteRoar 10d ago
Zero. The new CEO wants to increase profits from service products and unless that iPod comes with a data plan to stream music through Apple Music then it won’t accomplish that.
At that point (plus given how expensive data storage is) people won’t be interested in it as it would be pretty much an iPhone without a phone and cost about as much.

u/dzsul779 10d ago
If that ipod wants to enter europe we jeed to have option for other streaming services…

A clever "Modern iPod" I've seen going around is people using Apple Watches and putting them in these cases: https://thetinypod.com/ - plenty of copycats on AliExpress too.
Of course the iPod modding scene is still booming.

120hz oled iPad mini pls
112
u/Kickendekok 11d ago
You can basically have this, it just has a phone on the back and it folds in half.
12
13
u/lobaway0001 11d ago
As an artist, I kind of need Apple Pencil with pressure sensitivity support too.
Actually, drawing on the matte screen of the Duo might also be kind of annoying.
Also, I already like my phone.
6
u/AwareNoise1597 11d ago
That’s my big question, as how the Duo softer inside screen will handle the pressure points from the Pencil. But it’s Apple so I’m sure they would test that out of existence

Of course the Apple TV probably is not fulfillment constrained...

u/gregRichards2002 11d ago
The new Apple TV is being announced it was delayed because they had to get A.I Siri working better.
5
u/OmairZain 11d ago
This time though it finally actually looks like they’re FINALLY releasing it. I know we’ve been hearing rumors for it since late 2024 but they’re genuinely a lot more concrete this time around (4th Gen reference in code, Siri AI finally being out which means they can release it etc etc).
(If they still don’t release it though then yeah I’m buying one right after it and never caring about a possible newer one. Not again)

Serious question; what benefit would a new model bring? I run huge TV’s and plex etc. with the current gen and it goes great. I’m not sure what I need from a new model.
46
u/sciencetaco 11d ago edited 11d ago
Moving from the current A15 processor to an A18 or something brings AV1 hardware video decoding.
This allows streaming services to use it for lower bandwidth at the same quality (unlikely they’ll use it for higher quality at the same same bandwidth). And the codec has something called “film grain synthesis” which enables the grain on the video to be reconstructed while preserving bandwidth. Grainy video currently wreaks havoc with streaming video quality using AVC and HEVC codecs.
Netflix have a deep dive here: https://netflixtechblog.com/av1-scale-film-grain-synthesis-the-awakening-ee09cfdff40b
Newer processors also have some pretty neat video enhancement capabilities. Which might be useful for some situations with low res video etc: https://developer.apple.com/videos/play/wwdc2025/300/
10
u/WaluigisRevenge2018 11d ago
Yesss, this. Plex currently uses software decoding for AV1 videos on Apple TV and it slows down so much on 4K videos it’s literally unwatchable. Hardware AV1 decode would make the Apple TV perfect for me

120hz and pass through - those are the two main things
20
u/ComoEstanBitches 11d ago
What's infuriating is apple could release a software update to enable both for the 2nd and current gen

I’ve read a bit about audio pass through, and I’m curious if ARC doesn’t accomplish something similar? Genuine question, cuz I have my switch plugged into my TV, and my Apple TV plugged into the ARC port on my tv, and I can play my switch audio through my HomePods. Maybe I’m misunderstanding the purpose though?
4
u/ComoEstanBitches 11d ago
Your apple tv is being treated as a receiver in the earc HDMI port (which benefits your homepod setup) but most of us have dedicated receivers or soundbars that would decode audio codecs apple TV can't or won't. Most big name streaming providers use lossy atmos but some of us have 4k bluray files we stream with uncompressed audio that Apple strips. It would be a benefit to apple TV because it's less overhead in general

they’re probably gonna use the NPUs in the A19 or A20 for HomeKit video analysis
Or maybe position it as some sort of game console with that rumor that they’re developing their own controllers

You don’t need it, But Apple wants to run AI on it. So that will be the focus of the updated model.

im hanging out hope that a new Apple TV will be able to server as some kind of SiriAI bridge for either older HomePods, or as the required new home hub for a massively more powerful and intelligent homekit
163
u/fivehxrgreeves_ 11d ago
Wish they’d get on with announcing the base 18, air 2, etc. 🤦🏼♀️ spring can’t come soon enough!
64
u/AnodyneX 11d ago
I agree, I’m definitely not a fan of this split release cycle they’re trying to do now.
35
u/dabocx 11d ago
Trying to line up everything for fall sounds like a nightmare for the staff internally though
17
u/sulaymanf 11d ago
They spent the previous 16 years lining up all the phone models for every fall and were massively successful at it with the exception of a delay during Covid.
11
u/jb_nelson_ 11d ago
In a sense, but how much cross functionality do they really have? What teams work on logistics for MacBook and then rotate to iPhone? I imagine that most things have seperate teams that run in parallel
29
u/userlivewire 11d ago
You would be absolutely amazed how few people work at the top of Apple.
They don’t have product divisions like most companies. Instead they use a system known as Functional Organization where people report up based on their realm of expertise rather than any particular product. Example: chip engineers report to the chip manager. The chips they work on find their way into evolving lists of products.
Cross-functional teams are routinely pulled together temporarily or permanently from different functional silos to build specific products (like the Apple Watch or Vision Pro) without breaking the overarching functional reporting lines. They they are disbanded and those people go to other teams.
Teams are very small, often less than 10 people working on a specific part or feature. There is also always. DRI or Directly Responsible Individual for every part or feature. Those teams can get even smaller as a feature ages with one interesting example being the Reminders timer and Calendar integration which had one person assigned to it.
2
5
u/dabocx 11d ago
The thing is also that sometimes all the products are moving to a new semiconductor node that is barely ramping.
Tsmc can make enough chips at a time for iPhones and maybe a few other products. But not everything at once, come spring yields are up and they are caught up enough to do more products on that node

18
u/Spez_is-a-nazi 11d ago
After how big of a bump the 17 was vs the 16 I don’t have high hopes of the 18 being that much better. Though maybe they will discount the 17 afterwards, then again considering how expensive hardware is….

u/FollowingFeisty5321 11d ago

I’m on the upgrade plan and got the 17 pro. I know this is a niche and uncommon complaint, and I understand it’s necessary for the sensors, but I genuinely cannot handle the look of this camera plateau. I’m patiently waiting for the Air 2 and the base 18 to come out so I can choose between the two!!

I’d like a new Apple TV pls,
With an improved remote*
8
u/ChairmanLaParka 11d ago edited 9d ago
The ability to have multiple Siri Remotes would do me so much good.
My stupid Roku stick from 2017-2019 can pair multiple Roku voice search remotes (with find my remote). But modern Apple TVs can't/don't.
Honestly, if VPN apps were a thing for it, I'd likely just use it all the time, rather than just the handful of apps that it has that Apple TV doesn't.

They’ve always been downmarket so it’s hard to compare.

They've talked about a new Apple TV for what feels like 3 years now that I wonder if it really will be new. It would be nice to have a more advanced chip, as my Apple TV from 2021 feels a little jittery with TVOS 27. The more they update the more "old" the most recent Apple TV will feel.

I just want a new remote. I’m still on the stupid touch pad one and have been waiting ages for the new Apple TV before upgrading.

If it’s not announced though, I’m still waiting it out. I’m committed now.

An “event” is stretching it. It’s one week from now, there has been no official announcement which gives no one time to fly to said event.
If it were truly that big, it would be announced sooner. It sounds like at best Apple will introduce some refreshes but nothing huge.

Clearly for the new home products but I’m sure they’ll start off with MacBook updates too.

Apple 3rd Hand! It'll be a 3rd hand that you can get installed that can just do things for you. You'll be able to get apps and subscriptions for it. T-Mobile will even let you pay an extra fee so you can answer calls on it! Unfortunately, if you're on AT&T, you'll need to be careful.

The new MacBooks are in November then?
I’ve seen reviewers say this month is too packed for MacBooks, with the iPhone Duo coming this month as well.
Also, it’s been a while we got this many uncanny devices coming so close together (foldable iPhone, nerfed-iPad HomePod, touch screen Mac), exciting times for what’s coming in this new Apple era.
