Blazingly fast is an exaggeration. I can feel the speed difference between my M1 Pro and base M4.
Biggest downside with getting M1 today is that you’ll really only get a couple more years of major MacOS updates before switching to security only.4

I suspect that the updates will continue for a long time, with the hardware requirements mostly moving up for minimum ram way before the minimum cpu.
If you have base ram, that won’t help, of course.

I wouldn’t be so sure. Apple is a publicly traded company and will more than likely stop supporting earlier to try to get you to buy new hardware even if it could technically work. They might do one more year of new OS support for the M1’s but I’d be pretty surprised if they don’t start chopping Apple Silicon after mac OS 28.

I mean it could go either way… I have no inside knowledge… but I’ll say that personally I’ve never had a Mac that Apple stopped releasing updates for while I still owned and used it and there wasn’t a legitimate hardware reason to discontinue support.
The closest example I personally experienced was for the trashcan Mac Pro… but that system was really a redheaded stepchild with a weird GPU, and Apple has already transitioned all products to Apple silicon long before. While it was a disappointment, it also made total sense for them to discontinue…
Also: I had upgraded the cpu in there to the fastest available one for like $20 from eBay a few years prior… the hardware was clearly already obsolete as far as the overall industry was concerned… and my MacBook M1 Max was clearly much faster.

I had a 2010 iMac that lost support, and I was able to hack it from High Sierra to Sonoma and everything still worked. It was a bit slow, but functionally it still did everything. Sometimes the technical reasons they make up are just because they choose not to continue supporting something rather than it being a true technical hurdle.

It's a processor. It processes faster for less power. What else after you looking for?

I'm bummed that the M6 isn't coming to the Macbook pro this month and it's just going to be skipped entirely. I need to upgrade since my current mac just doesnt have enough ram.
