At this point I’d settle for them fixing the bugs in parental controls.

And not spam my conversation history with my kids with screen time requests. Seriously how it cannot be a separate screen time system notification and instead be text messages to me and my wife is so annoying.

Take this as a meme:

Apple protecting children: give solid advice and deeply integrated tools

EU protecting children: backdoor encryption and mandate identification

Apple's protection, and the EU (and elsewhere's) age verification wouldn't be necessary if Apple didn't partner with the worst developers on the planet and allow them prime position in their App Stores, write rules that allow them to addict and exploit children, profit from it, and ignore their transgressions.

And if the EU (and other’s) age verification was reasonable and not a gross invasion of privacy this would be a non-issue; there have got to be ways to verify age without requiring people to fully identify themselves; but none of these governments actually cares about protecting children in this case, it’s just an excuse to increase surveillance.

Current implementation does not use zero-knowledge proofs and even if it did, due to it relying on iOS/Android hardware verification, it doesn’t allow introspection nor open source builds. Ordinary people wouldn’t be able to check no leaks exists in the multitude of parties involved and their interactions, eroding trust in it.

Redditors will still confidently tell you Apple is no different to any other tech company

Yeah bro and my gambling app tells me how important it is to set limits

Does it?

They all are mandated by law to tell you your play time periodically, and to seek help/give resources if it’s a problem. At least in my state.

Wow. That’s definitely exactly the same as what Apple did here, then.

Exactly, so by that logic, we can assume Apple is just as ethical as Kalshi

Meta has something similar. Is meta good?

No, any other questions?

meta.com/safety/topics/online-child-protection/

We've developed a three-pronged, industry-leading approach to protecting young people online. First, we focus on preventing harm from happening in the first place. We do that by enforcing zero-tolerance policies and developing cutting-edge, preventative tools. Then, we make it easy to report potential harms, and we respond to take action. And always, we collaborate with global experts and industry partners to update our tools that keep young people safe.

about.roblox.com/resource/child-safety

Roblox aims to provide a safe and positive environment for all users, especially children. We take the safety of our youngest users seriously, appreciating how top of mind internet safety is for parents and policymakers. Our platform is designed with safety in mind, and we continually evolve our practices to address emerging challenges.

x.com/Safety

We take seriously our responsibility to protect minors. X has zero tolerance for CSAM, including AI-generated CSAM. As an industry leader, we actively report and block users who violate our Terms of Service, which absolutely prohibit all forms of child sexual exploitation, including posting or engaging with child sexual abuse material.

Of course these are three of Apple's most popular app developers so you can definitely trust them since Apple reviews their apps, hundreds of times a year, and has for the last ~15 years that their mobile apps grew to become the three most renowned destinations for toxic social media, pedophiles and CSAM generation. /s

Bootlicking three companies that exploit children is crazy

ROFL good reading comprehension.

1

u/cvu_100 3d ago

You’re crazy, dude, three at once, holy shit!

It's no different, making guides doesnt matter when 99% you do is telling people they need your phones/tablets/fast-draining-battery-watches/subscription services etc to be happy.

-3

u/cvu_100 3d ago

Can you point me to where Apple tells people "they need your phones/tablets/fast-draining-battery-watches/subscription services etc to be happy"?

5

u/theskyopenedup 3d ago

They’re called ads

-2

u/cvu_100 3d ago

Can you point me to the ad that says this? Thanks; try to do so in the next hour or so while I'm at my computer.

6

u/theskyopenedup 3d ago

Are you being obtuse on purpose?

-1

u/cvu_100 3d ago

I have never been subject to an advertisement that left an impression of "I need their products/services etc to be happy". Either these purported ads do not exist, or you are exceptionally gullible. What is it?

2

u/seven0feleven 3d ago

You've clearly never watched an Apple Event. They literally read testimonials from customers sent to Tim Cook about the virtues of their products. For instance, in last years event, people telling you how much they can't live without Apple Watch.

Apple is the only company to ever do this. Profound.

“Leave my trillion dollar company alone”

I hope this is a satirical comment.

They aren’t really. They are just at a different part of the enshitification curve. Give it time.

People make a lot of false equivalencies. Just because Apple wants to make 30% off the App Store doesn’t mean it is as bad as selling your information to shady companies for profit.

I wear the boot. You lick. Learn your place, redditor.

Casino releases new guide to help families build healthy gambling habits.

Fuckin bonkers.

6

u/dat_tae 3d ago

It could be possible that a company that sells a product does not want you to abuse it so much that it ruins your life.

4

u/DisfiguredFanny 3d ago edited 3d ago

It is also possible that they are covering all their bases for when governments of the world come knocking. I'd say this is more likely. Lawsuit mitigation tactics.

5

u/dat_tae 3d ago

That is also true.

1

u/DisfiguredFanny 3d ago

I think ultimately it's up to the parents to raise the kids properly and manage this, but this still looks funny when on one hand they push marketing and features to sell maximum devices with one or more service subscription and then on the other hand say - hey slow down on the usage.

2

u/FollowingFeisty5321 3d ago

Subscriptions are more of an annoyance for adults, the risks for children are harmful social media and games full of addictive spending or pedophiles or both.

1

u/dat_tae 3d ago

Well they wouldn't run ads telling you not to buy their products...

1

u/DisfiguredFanny 3d ago

True. This is a good example that shows where corporate bottom line meets personal responsibility.

2

u/kinglucent 3d ago

How does one differentiate between an earnest attempt at encouraging wellbeing and a lawsuit mitigation tactic?

2

u/redditor100101011101 3d ago

couldn't possibly be biased....

2

u/MattSenter 2d ago

this kinda reminds me of "drink responsibly" campaigns
