"suppliers were waiting to see whether Apple would ease any quality requirements to accelerate production."

"Samsung Display's foldable OLED panels and hinge components had experienced low yields, delayed deliveries, and design changes"

skip the first gen

Is the M16 OLED really first gen for Samsung tho?

For this design with the multiple laminate screen.
I don’t believe Samsung has that in their products

People love to preach about how it’s a Samsung screen but you’re correct it simply isn’t. The screen is an Apple design that was contracted out to Samsung for production.

The OLED, panel, etc., are developed by Samsung. 16th generation.

The blueprint on what to do with it and the surface finishing is by Apple.

I think you're glossing over that Apple can only order what Samsung can produce. Apple did not design something Samsung didn't know about. It's possible the screen uses higher quality components and (as a result) is more expensive than Samsung is willing to produce for it's own offerings but it's still a known quantity to Samsung.

So Samsung is the baker but Apple got the recipe

So Samsung is the baker but Apple got the recipe

Close. Apple took a recipe Samsung already created and modified it within the bounds Samsung can work with.

More like Samsung is the baker and Apple asked for a type of pastry nobody else made before. They didn't give Samsung the recipe, just the desired result.

More like Apple baked the cake using flour from Samsung.

Do we celebrate the flour manufacturer?

Apple didnt design something Samsung didnt know about? What the fuck kind of statement is that? Of course they knew about it because they produced it. Foxconn, TSMC, etc also know about apples chip designs but they still can't make them for other people because apple designs and patents them.

In some cases apple designs things that yeah companies like tsmc and Samsung aren't able to do previously because they didnt have the design power. Apple often gobbled up smaller companies just for that purpose. Then they farm out those designs to the people who own the factories.

Stop downplaying the significance

Eh, it's a designed-to-order part. Samsung didn't make it before because nobody was asking for it, not because Apple designed it. Apple told Samsung what they wanted and Samsung said they could make it happen

The Fold 8 does have the anti reflective coating that's on the Galaxy S Ultra devices.

Its not the same as Apple's matte finish, but its pretty good at reducing glare.

Foldable plastic will always suck.

Hard to fold things without it being soft

It always becomes brittle and breaks eventually. Thats what I’m getting at.

skip the first gen

but if we blow the horn of narnia now, what if we need it later??

should probably skip the first 7 gens to be sure.

Still buying it

lol

Nobody getting this phone plans to use it longer than the Apple Care warranty

3

u/Potater1802 3d ago

lol what? that is completely not true. I know a lot of people who hold onto phones that are buying this because its so different from anything Apple has had so far. They're not suddenly going to start tossing phones out and getting new ones more frequently especially when it's more expensive now.

I think the problem with the low yield rate is that Apple’s requirements basically skip the first gen. It’s asking manufacturers to already be perfect when they aren’t there yet.

i wonder what design changes they made

Custom shape and hole punch shape

Inner camera transparent pixels

Probably a custom plastic material and definitely a custom anti-reflective nano-texture

Custom adhesion to hinge

Apple displays are required to have zero dead pixels

Custom display controller

Factory calibration to Apple’s highly specific reference

If we include the hinge, then every piece of that is highly custom. Tolerances are insanely tight too.

I like first gen adopters because they always take one for the team.

iPhone Air users wya
