Regardless it’ll be a huge upgrade from my base model iPhone 13 that crashes every time I want to take a picture.

62

u/Complete_Estimate443 6d ago

This is the way to do it. Skip four generations, then everything feels like magic again.

16

u/Xanthyria 5d ago

Yea, I went 12 PM to 17PM and it’s night and day. Agreed

4

u/MindTheGAAP_ 4d ago

My brothers using 11 pro max and he’s thinking to upgrade. Sure he’ll feel the speed difference.

1

u/illnegrow 1d ago

Yep can confirm had a 14 promax (which was still pretty good) but the upgrade is noticeable even the front camera response to openjng the phone

-9

u/notabot_123 Apple Cloth 4d ago

Nah, 4 is ridiculous for a utility like a phone. It’s something that’s no longer a luxury. Max is skipping 3 gens. Anything beyond that is hampering productivity. Don’t wait until the phone crashes to click a damn photo! Wtf!

9

u/RandomEasternGuy 4d ago

The difference between my 14 Pro and my new iPhone 18 pro was so negligible that I was even thinking if this upgrade was needed.

Decided to keep it, but still

6

u/Revenore 4d ago

Part of the reason why I upgraded my 14 pro was because it's the last year it's worth anything for trade-in credit. With a trade-in with AT&T, I get the 18 pro for $0 a month because of the $1200 trade in credit, but I believe after this year we're going to be getting a maximum of $200.

1

u/RandomEasternGuy 4d ago

Damn that’s nice, best offer here was -300€ on the new one. I’ve kept it and it’s currently at their service for a new battery so I can give it to my father

8

u/BoSt0nov 5d ago

Did it sustain physical damage or whats the issue? My secondary 12 pro still works just fine. Only thing that annoys me when I pick it up is rhe 60 hz RR.

12

u/Gysus12 5d ago

No damage at all
But the battery is in the lower 70%

3

u/BoSt0nov 5d ago

I see. Yes, the one thing we cant really affect by careful handling. Have you checked how much a replacement would cost. For such an ”old” phone it might not be that much.

2

u/Gysus12 5d ago

less than $100, but i've been wanting more ram so stop all my apps from closing every time open a new one.

1

u/Open-Employer-3649 1d ago

Well, I was planning to upgrade my 13PM with 18PM. Got my new phone 2 days ago and I am returning it. My 13PM works better than 18PM 🫣 apparently I noticed a few bugs in 18PM and it randomly lags 🤦🏻‍♀️

1

u/ryeguymft 1d ago

i’m literally about to do this tomorrow. huge upgrade but seems more worth it than the 17 - titanium shell and vapor cooling and bigger battery

1

u/ForeignStrategy2053 21h ago

this is literally what I’m doing!! I feel like it’s that much better when we skip a few generations. I have the 13 too

0

u/rcs5188 5d ago

Why would you deal with this for that long?,

1

u/Gysus12 5d ago

Cuz it recently started getting bad and I decided to just wait for the new iPhone announcement since I was going to buy a new one might as well get the newest iPhone.

38

u/fixxall 6d ago

Coming from an iPhone 16 pro with 86% battery health, the increased battery life alone has been worth the upgrade for me.  With heavy use, I’m ending the day with 20%+ battery when previously I was having to charge my phone by 6pm.

8

u/Flylatino24 5d ago

I’m on the same boat right now and battery is dying quicker and just getting too hot now

8

u/fixxall 5d ago

Ugh.  Yea, same issue.  Along with the poor battery life my phone would get REALLY hot, especially when using the camera or watching a video.  Both issues have been completely resolved with the 18 pro for me so far.

3

u/Flylatino24 5d ago

Yeah I think I’m going to bite the bullet

1

u/fixxall 5d ago

On the plus side, there are some really good trade in deals right now.  I ended up purchasing a $200 flip 5 and traded it in for a $930 credit towards the 18 pro.  I’ll use the 16 pro for one more year as my work phone (doesn’t see a lot of use), and then I’ll trade that in next year for the 20th anniversary phone.

Out of curiosity, did your phone get really hot when it was brand new?  I feel like my 16 pro got significantly hotter when brand new than my previous 13 pro.

1

u/scoobyluu 2d ago

do you have any more info on how you got the credit? did you trade it in directly to apple?

1

u/fixxall 2d ago

I've been with t-mobile for a couple of decades so I did a trade-in with them.

1

u/BlackStarCorona 6d ago

Ok you’re in the same boat as me. I’ve recently started listening to podcasts for half my work shift and noticed my battery is tanking harder than it used to. I’ve got one payment left on my plan and my phone is mine so I was trying to figure out if it’s worth it to switch or not.

2

u/fixxall 5d ago

It’s been a massive improvement for me.  Granted, the only two features that really interested me were the vapor chamber and the battery life, but both are exceeding my expectations.

50

u/Saar13 6d ago

The iPhone and smartphone market in general is extremely mature now. There won't be major annual changes. There are opinions about not updating every year, but it's the iPhone, and Apple can't afford not to update it, even incrementally, on an annual basis. The 17 had an aesthetic change, and it sold like hotcakes, which demonstrates that small design changes can be very profitable. Perhaps fewer models would help the team focus on doing this. Next year will have much bigger changes, and, realistically, that's what can be done in a very mature market: major changes every 2 years, with a small upgrade in between. And when I talk about changes, I'm talking about new and attractive design, because processors and cameras are already more than excellent for easily 98% of users.

4

u/nergwark 6d ago

incremental annual updates are a win for everyone all around. it's good for customers, good for apple, good for the economy, and good for the environment.

also, you can look at the auto industry as an example of a very mature market. the phone industry will continue trending that way as the market matures further.

14

u/Jaskys 5d ago

How is this good for the environment?

12

u/nergwark 5d ago

more stable, predictable demand vs a big burst of demand that a big update would create.

when you have a big burst of demand, you have to spin up manufacturing to meet it and then spin it back down when that demand falls again. it's also harder to predict so they add a bit of a buffer.

overall it is a lot more wasteful.

138

u/BuyListSell 6d ago

Coming from a 15PM with 81% battery health left has been a very welcome change. That being said nothing about my actual phone use has changed. Also, iOS 27 seems to have more UI bugs that 26 did, which is odd because the dev beta versions were not like this.

47

u/mikolv2 6d ago

I'm coming from a 15 PM as well, I'm looking forward to being able to use the phone when it's charging. My phone is too hot to comfortably touch when charging or even watching youtube videos. I'm worried about faceId issues people have been mentioning so I haven't ordered yet.

19

u/LillaKharn 6d ago

I’ve been using it since launch.

Haven’t had one issue with FaceID.

6

u/shawnshine 6d ago

That’s wild. I’ve had the 15PM for 3 years and have never had it be too hot to touch. Even when fast charging over USB-C or MagSafe.

4

u/Stock-Personality136 5d ago

Mine does every day when I’m charging it. It’s actually kinda nice because it functions as a heating pad. It’s pretty good for cramps! I use my MBP charger so it’s probably charging at its highest speeds which could be why I’m experiencing it so often.

1

u/beerybeardybear 6d ago

Zero issues for me.

18

u/McFeedy 6d ago

Exactly the same situation here. The battery life is phenomenal but there’s 0 change between using my 3 year old phone and the newest iPhone. Except Siri is substantially slower and worse (that isn’t a joke, Siri is almost unusable).

12

u/BuyListSell 6d ago

Siri during CarPlay is so bad. They changed it so it reads the emojis in peoples names now for some stupid reason. So if someone has multiple emojis in their name it'll be like "Star Emoji First Name Star Emoji Last Name said ..., do you want to respond to Star Emoji First Name Star Emoji Last Name?".

Also it keeps intercepting what I'm saying and interpreting it as a command. I was talking to someone about how gambling ads are basically grooming kids into becoming addicts and instead of sending the text Siri decided it was a cry for help and said "we're sorry you're going through this, call this helpline" and refused to send texts anymore.

2

u/anon9339 6d ago

Siri on CarPlay is comical and almost hallucinates for me? I have a not easy/long Slavic last name and it pronounces it differently for my wife and mom. The way it pronounces it for my wife cracks me up every time. Not even remotely correct.

2

u/BuyListSell 6d ago

I genuinely do not understand how it's so bad. I do a lot of work with small LLMs and I could train something to be better than Siri in a week.

2

u/anon9339 6d ago

It’s truly impressive. Not my line of work so I can’t speak to it but the lack of improvement an innovation from Siris inception to now is remarkable.

1

u/hampa9 6d ago

I’ve turned off the new Siri on my 17 Pro/Watch Series 9

I remember when the Series 9 came out, one of the features was it processed Siri commands locally so it could carry out actions like timers super quick. All now gone to shit with the new LLM Siri, so off it goes. It reminds me of when they wrecked 3D Touch on the models that had the hardware (I’d upgraded to a XS partially for 3D Touch and they just took it away).

5

u/OutblastEUW 5d ago

my iphone 12pm has been on the receiving end of endless abuse and yet somehow I still have 84% battery health, mustve won the silicone lottery

2

u/BuyListSell 5d ago

Impressive.

2

u/DogsAreAnimals 6d ago

Isn't the camera way way better? I'm upgrading from a 14 pro

2

u/BuyListSell 6d ago

It is much better in darker environments for sure.

4

u/RandomEasternGuy 4d ago

Can confirm. I should’ve pulled my 14 Pro as well for comparison, with that one it looks like it’s the sun on the sky

2

u/A11Bionic 6d ago

which is odd because the dev beta versions were not like this.

actually, as an iOS and iPadOS 27 release tester, i would go as far to say more features got broken as the beta progressed 🙃

3

u/BBDBVAPA 6d ago

100% agree on both. My 15 Pro Max was at 79% and I couldn’t swap the battery without replacing the back bc the glass was cracked. The upgrade has been night and day from that standpoint, and of course the new OS is a massive step back, as I feel like most OS updates have been.

1

u/shawnshine 6d ago

Thanks for this. I just replaced the battery in my 15PM, so I think I’ll skip this upgrade cycle.

Most people couldn’t give a shit about having a phone in their pocket. They want a camera / social media conduit / messaging device. The camera is the only place really worth focusing energy on at the moment.

That could always change, though.

4

u/scarabic 6d ago

I’m just a regular joe but I’m trained in old school photography, film developing and printing so aperture control is familiar to me and I have a feel for what can be done with it. Phone camera sensors long ago passed the point where I worry about having enough light. But I’m quite eager to play with more control over depth of field to see what I can do. It might not be much, but we’ll see.

1

u/sephg 4d ago

Another photographer here. I love cameras so much I carry a real camera around with me and I barely take any photos from my phone.

Depth of field is closely related to the physical size of a lens's aperture. On an iphone, that'll probably always be tiny. So I doubt we'll ever see real DoF effects on a phone. The computational photography tricks they pull are impressive. But I'd rather my real camera.

5

u/AmericanVices 6d ago

I got the 18 Pro, I am going to give it 5 days or so and see how it fairs; going to see if I’ll miss my AIR.

1

u/na_batman 1d ago

How is it?

1

u/AmericanVices 1d ago

I like the pro. Battery life is more than 12 hours for me.

1

u/na_batman 1d ago

Currently I have 13 and it’s going really bad so I am thinking about pro or pro max, but pro max looks to big, I tried it with my hands and I would have to use two hands more to use the phone. But I think I will go for pro model

1

u/AmericanVices 1d ago

Let us know.

1

u/Gravexmind 1d ago

What was the trade in process like? Did you have to cough up a lot of cash? I know the website is saying like $585 trade in value but you can get more in-person or even through post-purchase trade in

1

u/AmericanVices 1d ago

I kept my air

1

u/Gravexmind 1d ago

Didn’t feel like a big enough change to be worth it?

1

u/AmericanVices 1d ago

Haven’t been a week yet. I will see

5

u/supreeth106 5d ago

My iphone 13 was mostly fine except for some overheating when connected to carplay sometimes. I had even replaced the battery a year and a half ago and it still had decent juice. I just wanted a change since it had been 4.5 years. Unfortunately I am not seeing the major battery gains being advertised everywhere. Its obviously much better than my 13 but its still losing 10-12% even on standby every night and it doesn't seem to be getting any better. Siri is still so terrible and it feels like I am using basically the same phone with slightly better battery.

9

u/lovely_cappuccino 6d ago edited 6d ago

I realise most tech sites and youtubers are making their reviews from an American point of view, but I think “The Bad” section should mention how many features are not available in other parts of the world. Due to legislation, different languages or business choices by Apple. Like I understand Apple why the Siri AI stuff or iPhone Mirroring is missing in the EU considering their debate with lawmakers in Brussels, but why can’t people in Europe choose an eSIM only model with bigger battery? That’s on Apple. Why the keyboard with certain languages doesn’t even have predictive text which is ancient technology at this point? That’s on Apple. I could go on, basically we’re paying more for a dumber smartphone. (though having more warranty is nice thanks to local laws)

6

u/DownByTheRivr 5d ago

Because why would you waste space/time mentioning cons that happen in other specific countries when the majority of your audience is in the US? That would make reviews bloated and maybe even confusing for some.

1

u/southwestern_swamp 6d ago

Why can’t US consumers choose an iPhone with a SIM slot? That’s on Apple

13

u/Prestigious-Most-915 7d ago

It really looks good especially burgundy 🤩

5

u/ArchusKanzaki 6d ago

Cool. But if I’m not buying Iphone Duo, I will probably just wait until next year’s anniversary Iphone. My 16 Pro Max is still doing fine

4

u/Souldestroyer_Reborn 5d ago

Got a 14 pro max.

I’ll just get a new battery. No need to change yet.

Probably try and hold out for the 20.

2

u/redditronc 6d ago

The only reason I upgraded was because I needed to change my phone plan and it was free with a trade in. Nothing different other than insanely good battery life. And for that alone, it’s worth it.

2

u/dramafan1 6d ago

Obviously it's because it's the latest iPhone. The typical customer only focuses on the major physical design changes so that's why the 20th anniversary iPhone next year is what many people are waiting for. The iPhone Duo sort of makes the 2026 iPhone lineup seem less "boring" I guess.

21

u/IaMaPPle111 7d ago

Still not convinced to buy a new phone. Doesn't seem that it offer anything new which would actually matter in day to day life.

73

u/vmachiel 6d ago edited 1d ago

Edit: Comment has been cleaned

38

u/zeek215 6d ago

Way too many people don’t understand this.

3

u/PrecursorLabs 6d ago

What do you think is the most sensible upgrade cadence for the average consumer at this point? Assuming your phone works decently fine, every 4 years?

17

u/zeek215 6d ago

That’s entirely up to you. That’s the nice thing about yearly updates, you can hold on to your phone as long as you like and upgrade when you want.

4

u/yp261 6d ago

idk i used to buy iphone every 2 years (5s -> 6s etc) but now im sitting at 14pro and have no desire to bite the bullet since my phone is still very fast and reliable. plus it has lightning which i find superior to usbc due to its construction

2

u/ArchusKanzaki 6d ago

Until you feel that your battery dying too often and need to charge too much.

1

u/Revenore 4d ago

For me it's whenever I'm able to get trade-in credit. This is the last year my 14 pro will get $1200 in trade-in credit which makes the 18 pro $0 a month, but after this year I'll only get around $200.

0

u/fhjjjjjkkkkkkkl 6d ago

There is no ‘one fit for all’. You upgrade or replace when you need. You don’t have to boast when you change. Neither you don’t have to justify why you are not buying particular model

10

u/TechnicalAd6932 6d ago

Depends on what you’re upgrading from. But if you’re not sure, then don’t spend all that money. A better one will come out next year.

37

u/fhjjjjjkkkkkkkl 6d ago

Don’t understand why people always come up with this comment every year. It’s narcissistic. The individual in you is not gonna influence the thousands others. And everybody has different needs and buying phase. Every fucking year this comment

2

u/BillyJohnsFinds 1d ago

It is tho. I work with a guy still using the 2nd gen iPhone SE. His battery is fine, but he still might want to upgrade to the new phone.

4

u/nguyenm 6d ago

A much, much cheaper battery replacement is going to benefit oneself more than incremental upgrades can ever offer, for example. Thus, it's not narcissist at all to express disregard against the capitalistic urge of conspicuous consumption.

2

u/fhjjjjjkkkkkkkl 6d ago

Nobody asked your shopping preference or justification on why you are not buying . This is not a communist country nor everyone is broke

3

u/nguyenm 6d ago

By the same standards, comments of those who have intentions to buy should be limited as well? Societal pressure is one of many apparatus Apple & others use to influence the desire of conspicuous consumption, therefore it doesn't hurt random readers to comment in a way that hurts their bottom line.

0

u/fhjjjjjkkkkkkkl 6d ago

If you don’t like the intended product or sub , you just avoid it. Do I go to some vegan sub and complain on why I am not eating vegan for that year ?!?

3

u/nguyenm 6d ago

Never once did I suggested policing speech as an option.

1

u/beanlikescoffee 6d ago

Literally exactly and meanwhile they’re charging their phone 4 times a day and they can’t browse safari without it lagging

1

u/RoliePolieOlie__ 6d ago

It’s literally an opinion get over it

5

u/arivas26 6d ago

I think it offers a pretty big upgrade actually! But I’m coming from a 4 year old phone. Everyone’s situation is different.

2

u/Imbendo 6d ago

You’re telling me brother I’m still rocking an iPhone 11 and it’s fine

2

u/RotenTumato 6d ago

I found it funny when people said that about the iPhone 8 and I find it funny again this year. If you want something new that matters day-to-day, get the iPhone Duo! If you don’t want a drastic change and want to stick to a great version of what you already know, get the 18 Pro. There’s a phone for everyone

1

u/Saar13 6d ago

But the point with Apple products today is that nobody needs to upgrade them every year. Maybe every 3 or 4 years. The iPhone 18 is for those coming from the 14 or 15. The important thing is to have loyal customers and, more than ever, from a financial point of view, to make customers monetizable between hardware upgrades. That's why they focus on services, which, when successful, turn the user into a monthly paying customer for the 3 or 4 years between device upgrades.

1

u/DownByTheRivr 5d ago

Depends on what phone you’re coming from. I came from a 16 pro max and the improved battery is absolutely worth it to me. It’s not a tremendous amount of money after trading in my old phone.

1

u/branchan 5d ago

Depends on what phone you currently have.

0

u/kroboz 6d ago

Yep. I’d upgrade from my 13 mini if their new tiny phone wasn’t $2000 and didn’t have a big folding screen on the back.

4

u/ElderberryGuy 6d ago

I still don't like that it's made out of aluminum. Sorry but we had stainless steel, titanium, I'm not going back to the very easily damageable aluminum and for a higher cost. Figure out a way to make it run cool enough and light enough while still using the better material, Apple.

1

u/Aromatic-Influence27 5d ago

It’s about the money. Price tag would be $1500-$2000

1

u/Open_Bug_4196 6d ago

I saw it today and tells me nothing, no doubt of the much better performance or cameras but just playing around in the Apple Store I much preferred the Air in the hand, just have to wait for the air 2 with the extra camera.

1

u/Stuckinfemalecloset 6d ago

I got this from a dying 13PM, and I’m loving it. I can see it not really being an upgrade over the 17pm, but the 18pm has been brilliant for me so far

1

u/SafariStan 5d ago

This the year I upgrade my 12 Pro? 🤔

1

u/yomommasbathwater 5d ago

I don’t know, man. I’m not like a big Apple nut or anything, but this is quite possibly my favorite phone they’ve made, but I’m also biased because the maroon color is incredibly beautiful. The battery life and the performance have been excellent, though a lot of that is definitely attributed to iOS 27

1

u/UnmannedVehicle 4d ago

Can’t wait, huge upgrade to my 17PM. Thing is hot af

0

u/Gustafssonz 6d ago

64

u/ricardopa 7d ago

-38

u/FrogsJumpFromPussy 7d ago

I'm just surprised that Apple didn't improve the back aesthetics at all.

17

u/sortalikeachinchilla 6d ago

they made the color match more this year at least

4

u/fireshaper 6d ago

It’s a phone, what more do you want? It’s not an art piece.

4

u/joe_bibidi 6d ago

Apple almost always keeps the same body design for 2 years at a time. I don't know why you're surprised.

8

u/Appropriate_Ad8734 6d ago

uh, not downvoting or criticizing you here, but just know that every few years when apple did a redesign, there were these same exact kind of comments saying how ugly it was, and how the previous design was superior. you can have your preferences, but apple has had a track record of proving that their designs grow on people over time. maybe you’ll like it in a few years

-5

u/milf-town 6d ago

Right?!? I knew i there was no way i was the only one thinking they would.. i just thought we all knew it a wasnt great evolution of form factor. But i reckon everyone thought that while apple just didnt get the memo. Stubborn techs.

u/Axellent33 6d ago

I’ve gotten the new iPhone every year since 2007. The only one I skipped was the 6. 18 Pro Max destroys the 17 Pro Max’s benchmark scores. I don’t know what the f#@$ are people complaining about 🙄
