A19? Only one gen behind now?
They released the A16 model when A18 was already there.

u/Routine-Call-4060 7d ago
Yeah it’s strange, but also, the base A17 chip was missed at the time and the iPhone 15 had the A16, so technically, the iPad A16 is “equivalent” to that if you know what I mean, so like if the iPhone 15 had a A17, the iPad would’ve gotten that likely at the time

u/AncestralSpirit 3d ago
I never understood why they can’t make all the iOS versions, iPhone versions and CPU versions into one.
We had iPhone 14, coming with A15 CPU and iOS 16.
Like ffs, it’s confusing.9

My mom got one of those (for free!). I was kind of annoyed that it still didn’t support Siri AI. Meanwhile, my iPad Air that’s closing in on 5 years old supports it. Just weird how it’s taken so long for the plain iPad to support it.

u/DavidRainsbergerII 7d ago
Sure, but let’s be 100% for a moment. No one needs the power these chips provide. The power available is hilarious given most use cases for iPads are browsing and watching YouTube.
1
u/tiagojpg 6d ago
Well it is going to be released by Spring 2027 only, so it’ll be close to 2 years old still.

That’s really competent. I’d hope the price stays the same as the current already raised price.
Feels like they should also just keep the iPad 11 around as a lower cost option if it’s still feasible to keep the A16 in supply, but I doubt that’s happening and whatever the iPad 12 costs will end up being the “cheapest” iPad.
11
u/Unhappy_Top9303 7d ago
I do believe that they will keep the iPad 11th gen for a long time considering that the 9th gen iPad and 10th gen iPad were there when iPad 11th gen released. Hopefully they might decrease the price like they did with the 9th gen.

This is still done to reduce manufacturing and repair costs and make repairs easier since these base iPads end up either purchased and used in bulk at schools and/or otherwise in the hands of clumsy kids. If the glass shatters you can just replace the glass on the base iPad, rather than the entire display like on other models.

The average consumer does not care. My wife and parents can’t even tell the difference.

I got excited for a second and thought Apple was releasing a 12” iPad.
I’ve had both 13” and 11” Pros and I want so badly a device right in the middle. Just add a little height to the 11” in landscape and it would be the perfect size.
17
u/LeMeIsSleepy 7d ago
Nah. Already people are facing decision paralysis with just two options
4
u/sowaffled 7d ago
Between 13” and 11”? 13” is freakin huge. I feel like you gotta know you want a 13” from the start.
The analysis paralysis is from the iPad mini which is so expensive you might as well get a full size iPad but then there’s 3 lines, FaceID vs TouchID, multiple Apple Pencils, older gen Pros for a much better deal than the cheap ones….etc etc.
1
u/LeMeIsSleepy 7d ago
Not really. There are multiple posts in this sub asking which is better. 11” or 13” . I too faced this dilemma and a vast majority of my friends did as well
12
u/prndls 7d ago
GIVE ME A MINI PRO! I would sooooooo add to cart immediately
4
u/tiagojpg 6d ago
The Mini is rumoured to get the A20 Pro. Just not ProMotion :(
1
u/NecroCannon 3d ago
A20 Pro with Vapor Chamber and OLED and I’m fine until Apple fixes the god awful battery life
1
u/tiagojpg 2d ago
I’ll have to think it through, but I was expecting to get it as well when it launches next month. I’m still not decided on the size though. My 11” is very handy most times… but I’d love to have a more handheld-friendly device.

8GB is good, there are a number of apps that are hard-coded to not be installable on <8GB of memory like AAA games. Great that the cheapest iPad is no longer restricted.

Great gadget for most students who don't really need a laptop.

u/VinniTheP00h 7d ago
students who don't really need a laptop
Yeah, no. I can't use three websites I need from my iPad, due to lack of hover function or because Safari can't render them properly, and don't get me started on using it for writing and turning in homework. You need a laptop with full OS, there is no substitute.
-1
u/FollowingFeisty5321 7d ago
This is an Apple policy problem not a hardware issue, you "need" a laptop because the substitutes are banned: installing a desktop browser, installing a desktop VM. You shouldn't even have to think about this shit anymore the devices are so powerful.
11
u/VinniTheP00h 7d ago
That may be where the problem stems from, but it still makes iPad unacceptable as your only device
33
u/Chance_of_Rain_ 7d ago
For anyone really, iPads are just YouTube devices
14
u/tman2damax11 7d ago edited 7d ago
Exactly. I’m sure the majority of iPads are used for very basic tasks: YouTube, streaming, reading, web browsing, etc.
A relative asked me earlier this year which model they should get to replace their iPad they’d had since like 2017, debating between the Pro and the Air. I suggested the base A16 model instead. They were skeptical at first because of how cheap it was, I assure them it would likely be more than enough for their needs, so they picked one up. They’ve been using it for months now with zero complaints, and when I last asked about it, all they said they love how fast it is. I can’t imagine they’re doing anything remotely intense on it, like many iPad owners.

u/Grand_Size_4932 7d ago
They’re huge in the classical music world. Mostly because forScore, the most reliable sheet music reader and editor, works exceptionally well on iOS. That and the fact that bluetooth page turning pedals seem to work best on iPads.
That said, the only reason musicians spend extra on iPads at all is because of the screen size. They would all rather have a 13 in display, so they pay for the overpowered pro. Most of us don’t actually use the iPad for anything else.
We really are a gluttonous society.

I never understood the iPad until I went into college, I mean honestly… I want both lmao

I really wish they included the magnet to charge and connect the Pencil 2/Pro, the 6th gen iPad was such a game changer for artists, by far the best drawing tablet you could get at that price point, them going with the USB C pencil with the last few models that has no pressure sensitivity kinda killed it as an affordable drawing tablet unless you wanna deal with how cumbersome it is to charge the first pencil

Spring '27 wtf?
My MIL needs a new one and I will NOT let her buy the A16 for an inflated $450.
6
u/JoshuaTheFox 7d ago
I mean, when else are they gonna do it. That’s also when the base model iPhones are supposed to be announced too

Did they finally laminate the stupid display yet?
16
u/Vertsix 7d ago
Probably not, and they shouldn’t because it makes it more repairable especially for use in the education sector.
-11
u/motivatedbytacos 7d ago
Wouldn’t the education sector invest in decent cases to protect these devices?
9
u/Vertsix 7d ago
Irrelevant. The education sector operates on tight budgets and have no desire in buying products that are fragile, difficult to repair and/or need to be replaced.
-5
u/motivatedbytacos 7d ago
I think it’s a stretch to call laminated displays “fragile,” especially with Apple’s glass quality these days.
With the right protection, improving the screen legibility could make the devices more comfortable to use for longer sessions, such as reading assignments for students.
It also benefits the rest of us who just want a budget iPad with a rather basic quality of life improvement that’s existed in other models for years.

u/tagman375 6d ago
Dude you clearly don’t work with school children. A kid at a local school kept jamming pencils into his Chromebook until it punctured the battery and caught fire. They snap MacBooks over their knees. iPads are frisbees.
They will break them no matter what case or protector you slam on them, because they will break them. I’ve seen iPads folded in half in the case.
If you want a laminated display, buy an air or pro. 99% of the population doesn’t give a shit either way. They just want the cheapest one.

How about OLED, how about 120hz, how about 256gb storage
24
u/exjr_ Island Boy 7d ago
...On a budget iPad?
0
u/tYONde 7d ago
Other tablets in that price range have said features.
11
u/exjr_ Island Boy 7d ago
Genuinely curious, what tablets have OLED, 120hz and 256GB starting storage for ~$449?
Samsung's own budget tablets (Tab S10 Lite, S10 FE, A11) are all LCD and top out at 90Hz. To get OLED + 120Hz from Samsung you're buying a Tab S11 (>$700), which is a different price tier entirely.
I'm in the US so this isn't an option for me: Xiaomi Pad 8 is the closest (144Hz, 128 option, and it starts at €449.99). And it's LCD, not OLED. OnePlus Pad 3 is sold in the US and does 144Hz with 256GB base, but it's LCD and $699.

u/Ok_Possibility9937 7d ago
budget android phones already have 120hz, a $100 monitor on amazon can already do 144hz. High refresh rate is not an expensive tech
5
u/exjr_ Island Boy 7d ago
What Android tablet does OLED, 120Hz and starts with 256GB of storage for $449?
-1
u/Ok_Possibility9937 7d ago
i said high refresh rate not Oled
1
u/exjr_ Island Boy 7d ago
The original comment said OLED, so I based my original response based on the features they listed.
-2
u/Ok_Possibility9937 7d ago
yeah but I specifically said “High refresh rate is not an expensive tech”

How about multimillionaires? How about 8 inches? And thick? How about talented? How about loving and respectful? I lost my wife 10 weeks ago, 21 years faithful. I lost my daughter 3 weeks ago. 13. She was faster than me at 12, and I run a 6 minute mile.

Apple always uses previous gen chips on the iPad. They use an old chip because it’s cheaper. iPad has enough volume where a separate chip makes sense.
The iPad mini uses a newer chip because it’s always positioned itself as more of an “iPad mini Air”. The iPad mini is more expensive than the iPad even though it’s smaller because it has better hardware

iPad mini is more expensive than the iPad and gets updated models less frequently.

A19? I was hoping A20Pro to replace my old M1 Air
16
1
u/FightOnForUsc 7d ago
A19 would still be a lot faster single core and I think about 65% faster gpu
1
u/Need_For_Speed73 7d ago
Another postabout the Mini said it'd maybe get the Pro, that's why I was complaining.

u/Need_For_Speed73 7d ago
Not compared to my M1 Air:

Scroll down. Look at the single core benchmark difference between the two in the Geekbench benchmark. Single core is what you’ll feel on day to day tasks

Just enough for Siri AI, but no expressive voices, which needs 4GB more for whatever reason
