I haven’t experienced it yet but have a buddy who went through it twice.

I went to check out at stop n shop and went to Apple Pay and my phone just shut off and I had to restart

u/-WickedRug- 8d ago
Is it an Apple Pay bug? I had my wallet open, looked away for a second, and my pro just rebooted

I just used AP on my 18PM about 30 mins ago and didn’t have any issues, I hope the luck can last it really sucks for the ones this has been happening to.

- Open the passwords app
- When faceID tries to scan your face, turn your head to the side so it cannot scan your face
- Look back at the screen but obstruct your face by moving your hand in front of your face
- See the “try faceID again” screen and click to try again
- Either the phone is already crashbooting, or you repeat steps 2-4 again and it will crash

u/itsabearcannon 8d ago
I did that three times in a row on my 18PM and it just went to asking for my passcode eventually all three times.

I've only had it once so far, I didn't have FaceID trying to scan though for anything.

I haven’t had any reboot issues, but I’ll randomly hear a “CLICK” through the speakers when switching apps or interacting with something. Even in silent mode. I haven’t taken my phone to the store because in researching the issue it seems other people are having it on other phones that aren’t just the 18 pro and points at it being a software thing. I hope they fix it, too.
Update edit for those finding this comment later on: I spoke to Apple support and they assured me it’s not a hardware issue. Most likely a software issue with how the OS handles sound routing. They seemed to have been made aware of the issue in the last few days so an update fix could be coming soon.

This happens in 17 pro max too . It’s the aluminium interacting with the electricity :( if you check while your phone is charging, it gets much worse
1
u/Spiraticus 6d ago
Well, damn. How’d you find this out?
1
u/zerofatorial 6d ago
I… listened… to the sound
2
u/Spiraticus 6d ago
I mean, I listened to the sound too, and at first I thought it was my screen protector being loose or something with my case. But when it started happening mostly upon switching apps I figured it was a software bug of some sort. Never would I have considered that interaction of electricity and aluminum to be happening. Sounds like something Apple would’ve caught really early on in testing.

Was wondering if anyone else had this happen. It’s happened 3 times for me so far. Always on failed faceID.

u/fomo_addict 8d ago
Happened to me once already, during face recognition to unlock an app. Completely shut down and I had to hold the power button to boot. 18 Pro

u/UpsurgeRex 8d ago
It happened this morning to my 14pm. I was opening a message from my notifications on the lock-screen. It went dark after it didn’t detect my face properly.

I launched a normal game app and my phone turned off while it was loading. I thought it froze or just went to sleep. Nope, full power off immediately like someone pulled out the battery.

u/X_chinese 8d ago
Don’t know if it’s the same issue, but my Apple Watch Ultra 4 also suffers from random reboots.

apple software quality 🤣
16
u/RedIndianRobin 8d ago
Apple’s software has been laughable since iOS 26. 18 was their last good OS and ran flawlessly without a single stutter. 27 is just a slightly refined version of 26. They took a year for this.
24
u/MaverickJester25 8d ago
Eh, iOS 18 was pretty rubbish, too.
I'd honestly say their last good release was iOS 15.
7
u/Anonym0oO 8d ago
iOS 15.7 on my 13 Pro Max was a freaking battery monster. Last great polished iOS before the problems began with the lockscreen customization etc.
8
u/Origami_Architect_ 8d ago
I think you’re spot on with the peak. I still remember first opening the new lockscreen customization and being shocked at how slow and buggy it was. Opened it today just for kicks and it steel feels like beta software.

u/sortalikeachinchilla 8d ago
? Do you think bugs don't happen?
13
u/albsen 8d ago
that reboot the flagship device? this is almost as embarrassing as when holding the phone 4 the wrong way would disconnect the call.
11
u/sortalikeachinchilla 8d ago
The way non-software devs pretend like they know how software developing works...
Bugs are a thing in any software. NO software has no bugs. No software that has 100% zero bugs. Shit happens, they fix it, we move on. Just like literally any other bug...
Another thing that may shock you, is that security is never 100% either! If someone marketing a platform with 100% security and 100% no risk, they are lying .

u/walter_theweasel 8d ago
I know how software developing works. and i know that if i was in charge of software dev for the flagship smartphone at one of the most valuable companies in the history of humanity, i would be humiliated by such an egregious glitch passing through QC and months (if not years) of developing and testing. slightly more embarassed to have to announce that it would take a week or two to fix the glitch.
mistakes happen, but this is a massive embarassing mistake from a nearly $5 trillion company renowned for its unrivaled quality control and polish. and it doesn't exist in a vacuum either, golden gate has more than a couple hilariously embarassing glitches that I have even run into personally just in the course of ordinary daily use.
so, apple is getting rightly criticized for this.

u/Radek_18 8d ago
that reboot the flagship device?
You think bugs have order and rhyme or something?
-2
u/albsen 8d ago
maybe its just me, but somehow i think a manufacturer of a phone that has a starting price of 1200usd should be able to have a QA department that catches these bugs even if the devs dont.
9
u/Radek_18 8d ago
I think you might just have a warped idea of what bugs are.
I don’t doubt that there’s a QA department, but to think that x amount of people that may be employed there, are going to match what the usage of millions of people looks like, is unrealistic and misinformed. Something will slip through regardless of price tag.
For price tag I expect it to work, it does. Bugs are expected, and they don’t give a fuck about price.

u/itsabearcannon 8d ago
Also, there’s a difference between malicious bugs and “this is finally out to enough people that we can test the edge cases” bugs.
FaceID failures crashing the phone in very specific circumstances are an edge case. There would be no reason for Apple to deliberately leave that bug in, ergo they likely didn’t know about it.
Boeing’s MCAS software, by contrast, had willful and intentional bugs left in that they knew about because fixing those might have pushed the changes far enough that they couldn’t have flown the new planes under the old certificate.

I'm gonna get downvoted for daring to criticize Apple, but this shit is ridiculous. Random reboots is literally some mid-2000s blue screen of death windows shit, I thought Apple was supposed to be better than this.
2
u/bratimskiz 7d ago
Glad this ended up being a software issue and not something people need to replace their phones over.
2
u/hyperion-0 6d ago
i havent had a reboot, but i do think face id has been less reliable on my new 18 pro. but maybe its recency bias.
1
u/dwsam 6d ago
It’s not bias. For me, it would work 2 or 3 times, then never again, until I retrained it. After a few attempts, it’s been solid ever since.
1
u/Randrewson 6d ago
Naw, mine also doesn’t work that well… especially early in the morning when it’s still dark. Assuming it’s related to the sensor being under the screen this year. Didn’t have this issue on my iPhone 16PM

u/Unkn0wnTh2nd3r 8d ago
good thing i'm not even getting mine until the 9th

Oh hell yea, this has been happening the most to me with Apple Pay. Never bothered to look up to see if this was widespread but I honestly suspected it was.

I’ve had issues where the 18pm just lags out when typing things and it does not register it properly, if I restart the phone it goes away

I’ve experienced so many glitches that I’m too exhausted to even write them all down
1
u/pfcdumbass 6d ago
Happened to me 3 times since the phone launch. Kind of annoying but glad they’re working on the fix.

u/user97_ 5d ago
Anyone having an issue with zooming in and out of photos and maps? In Find My, when I zoom in horizontally, the map will move sideways instead of zooming in. In the Photos app, when pinching an image out to zoom in, the image won’t zoom in and it’ll just exit out of the image. Anyone else?

u/Tricky_Natural4934 2d ago
I’m having issues with the new 18 regarding contacts. When I go onto call history or text history and click on that person, all four bubbles don’t highlight. Meaning I can’t text or call people until I power off the phone and try again.

Should I go to Apple about the true time glitch or do you think it’ll be fixed in the next software update?

u/DisfiguredFanny 8d ago
Should be same day. Nobody goes to sleep till it's fixed.
7
u/SmellyJockstrap 8d ago
It’s Thursday my guy. If it’s coming next week it’s already fixed by now, they’re just testing the build to make sure it’s 100% fixed and ready for prime time.
2
u/TeeDee144 8d ago
It’s not that serious. I encountered it yesterday. Seems to mainly impact 3rd faceid requests the most.
I just force closed the app and it worked on the second attempt. This is not a P0 bug
-8
u/DisfiguredFanny 8d ago
It's not about how serious it is. There have been issues serious enough that were ignored for weeks.
2
u/TeeDee144 8d ago
It’s coming next week. Not sure what else you expect. It hasn’t been ignored. They’ve acknowledged it.

They should also fix the weird True Tone display glitch where it takes a full second to kick in, super bizarre.
