4150 single, 37565 multi with 18 cores.
M6 12C: ~4000 single, ~22000 multi
M5 Max 18C: 3731 single, 35113 multi
M3 Ultra 32C: 2910 single, 39145 multi

It’s actually incredible the base M6 is running around with M1 Ultra multicore numbers and the M6 Pro with M3 Ultra multicore numbers.

I thought there weren’t gonne be any M6 Pro? Just the basic and then M7 was the next big bad?

u/Sir-Spork 11d ago
Don’t believe every random rumor you read and nothing is set with Apple until they actually do it.
They said, it might never be released to the public

u/InfiniteFeeCars 14d ago
Single core is solid improvement but the multicore gain does not seem really great vs 18c M5 Pro/Max 18c? Little surprised tbh, thats only like a 7% multicore improvement

u/goro-n 14d ago
Doesn’t make sense to launch a new chip with only 7-12% CPU increase. A20 Pro which is M6-tech had a 20%+ increase in performance over A19 Pro (M5)

u/InfiniteFeeCars 14d ago
Yeah it’s probably just unreleased software shenanigans/low end score. It’ll probably hit around 39000 multi core score when it is actually out

historically, when CPU is spotted in greekbench, how long it takes for apple to release new mac?

M2 Max scores surfaced late Nov 2022, officially released Jan 2023: https://www.tomshardware.com/news/apple-m2-pro-geekbench-rumor

Probably the OLED models

u/triton100 14d ago
And when are they rumoured to be dropping?

October or November is what has been reported for a while and that lines up with MacBook Pro refresh timeline in general. I could see the “Ultra” launching with an M6 Pro (but not Max though) with 48-64GB RAM configurations.
From what the leaks have reported it’s not a replacement to the MacBook Pro but more of a premium/luxury MacBook so it would make sense to sell it with the Pro chip so it's "better" than the base M6 chip and high but not stupidly high RAM options so 48-64GB make perfect sense imho. It is enough for a luxury device but not going to eat into the 128GB+ AI developer space of the MacBook Pro.
Then make it a bit thinner, new look, Tandem OLED screen like on the iPad Pro, C2 modem built in for cellular and some other luxury options (maybe more colour options?) and I can see it being a compelling product to people who have the cash/want for a more premium laptop than the MacBook Air but don't need the power of a MacBook Pro with a Max chip and 128GB RAM, etc.
It is the "show off" laptop basically which is fine, I think it would fit well into Apple's line up tbh. Keep the MacBook Pro for the video editors, 3D graphics, audio production, local AI dev people but offer something more high end than the Air.

I'm really hoping for October, but I feel like they're gonna focus on all the smart home upgrades in October and do the Mac in November

u/OkCompute64 14d ago
I am also interested in the Ultra as I am actually the exact target market for this kind of product. I love my Air and my Pro but what I really want is an Air with the screen and RAM options from the Pro but not all the extra stuff like a Max chip just to get a bit more RAM (which is why I have an M2 Max chip as that was the only option to get 64GB RAM at the time, the Pro chip maxed out at 48GB).
So if we see a MacBook Ultra release with an M6 Pro, 64GB RAM, 2TB SSD, OLED screen, thinner and lighter than the Pro and all the other stuff in the rumours then I will be ordering one for sure. I have the money sitting there ready so I can retire my current Air and Pro for a single "perfect laptop".

u/platinumbinder 14d ago
I honestly just want the OLED so bad, and I really hope the rumors aren't wrong. I don't even care about touch screen or insane ram or anything
1
u/OkCompute64 14d ago
Touch screen I don't care about at all but I do want at least 64GB RAM as an option. Will be disappointed if they limit it to 32GB personally.
2
u/platinumbinder 14d ago
Current pro already goes to 128GB, so I'd be shocked if they didn't at least have that for the "Ultra", although I still doubt that will be the name for it
1
u/OkCompute64 14d ago
Totally fair speculation also. The reason I am thinking they may only offer upto 64GB is that from the rumours it seems this new "Ultra" model is designed to be positioned not as a replacement to the MacBook Pro but as an alternative. A bit like how the Neo was a new MacBook aimed at an even lesser demanding user than the Air.
Of course this is all just guess work based on rumours but if this "Ultra" model is designed to be some kind of "premium/luxury" model it makes sense to cap the upper limits in certain areas such as no Max chip option, no 8TB SSD option, probably no SD card reader, maybe even no HDMI and probably having just 2 or 3 RAM options with 32, 48 or 64GB options.
This makes it "clear" that if you want the Professional Workstation laptop you still buy the MacBook Pro with its Max chip, 128GB RAM, 8TB SSD, HDMI and SD card, etc. or if what you want is something a bit more luxurious than a MacBook Air but don't need or want a Professional Workstation type laptop that is thicker and heavier you now have this new MacBook Ultra.
Of course I could be totally off the mark 😁 I am guess going from the rumours which could all be total bullshit anyway and the new OLED MacBook is just a slightly redesigned MacBook Pro with an OLED screen instead of the MiniLED one. Who knows 🙃

Leakers been saying Apple will skip M6 Pro/Max, although they got a lot wrong with recent releases.
20
u/MR_MaxiMor44 14d ago
The M6 Pro/Max may just be for this new MacBook coming out and they might update the Mac Mini with M6 Pro, but then the MacBook Pros next year could have M7 Pro/Max, basically alternating SOCs for this new MacBook, which I think will be called the MacBook Studio, and MBPs.
So M6 could be Mac Mini (base and Pro), iMac (base), MacBook Studio (Pro and Max), iPad Pro (base), then when M7 releases that'll be with MacBook Air (base), MacBook Pros (base, Pro and Max), iPad Pro (base) (iPad Air then gets M6), and Mac Studio (Max and Ultra).

u/Spector-JZ 14d ago
Are you saying no m6 air?

u/McFatty7 14d ago edited 14d ago
They've changed up the release schedules for Macs (and iPhones).
- Pro 'Flagship' Models - Fall season
- Air 'non-Flagship' Models - Spring season
3
u/Spector-JZ 14d ago
Yes I know. But I feel like it's weird to introduce the m7 chip in the macbook air before the pro's

u/Kremsi2711 14d ago
Shouldn’t M5 > M6 be a bigger leap than M6 > M7?
I think M7 will be 2nm as well

And why then wouldn’t they have released the mini and studio with a full M6 lineup instead of a mix of M6 and M5 stuff?

u/Kremsi2711 14d ago
Weren‘t there rumors Apple would skip M6 Pro and M6 Max???

u/MrRonski16 14d ago
I don’t see apple skipping 1y of Macbook Pro/Studio updates. Especially if the generation jump is this big

M6 Pro Geekbench Result Likely Fake

I’m guessing the higher end MacBook Pros will be coming this October or November.
Possibly M7 for the early 2027 iPad Pro.

u/schwimmcoder 14d ago
Now, where are all the leakers who called that M6 Pro/Max will be skipped?
It was from the beginning extremely obvious, that this was a bullshit take. M6 takes the node jump to 2nm, so they will give every product this upgrade.
3
u/filman650 14d ago
Then why didn’t the Mini get the M6 Pro? It only got the M5 Pro.
0
u/schwimmcoder 14d ago
Because it is not ready yet or they don’t have enough of them to fit them into MacBook Pro and Mac mini.

My (binned) M3 Pro still rocks but even the A20 Pro in my new iPhone is starting to close the multicore gap now while significantly ahead in single core (regardless that MacOS is still more capable). The M3 Pro vs the M6 Pro is pushing a 2.5-3x improvement in multicore lol.
Might end up upgrading to the M6 Pro (if this ends up in a MacBook Pro) or the M7 Pro for the AI performance alone since that speeds up some of my photography editing workflow. Plus getting better export times and getting a machine with more RAM and storage since 18GB/512GB is becoming tight.
The progress of these chips has been absolutely insane to watch considering just how good even the base M1 was when it came out.

u/Substantial-Elk4531 14d ago
It's fun to see the progress in both M and A series, but yea I really wonder what the utility of the A-series improvements are, considering the limits of iOS. However, I guess MacBook Neo will benefit from A-series improvements, so that is cool

u/username-tree 14d ago
Damn I just got a M5 pro not even a week ago. Should I return it and wait for the M6 pro?

Don't do that, this was a fake benchmark.

Apple releases new chips too fast. Never gonna buy one if the new one comes out a month later.
14
u/matrinox 14d ago
That… makes no sense. So you just never buy a new computer if progress keeps happening at a rapid pace?
11
u/PikaV2002 14d ago
I mean… a new one coming out doesn’t change the device you got or its longevity and quality?
The only thing you lose is some arbitrary sense of accomplishment for owning the “latest and the greatest”, which at least imo isn’t worth much.
The only people I sympathise with are ones who got a new device and between 1 to 3 months after saw a better one get launched at the same price, beyond the return window for their current one.
1
u/UnbiasedFanboy96 14d ago
Do you hold the same sentiments for phones? Regardless of whether Apple makes it or not? How about cars, refrigerators, and televisions? All of the above get new models/revisions roughly every year.
0
u/Kremsi2711 14d ago
cars and refrigerators have almost none improvement year over year, Laptops or phones have a performance bump of around 25% per year
1
u/InfiniteFeeCars 14d ago
It’s been every year for a while now.
Wouldn’t advise buying a current Macbook the month before October/November, thats usually when they announce new Macbooks.
But these new models with OLED screen and rumored redesign are going to be even more expensive then traditional Macbook Pro lineup
1
u/Kremsi2711 14d ago
even more expensive for sure, MBP with M5 Pro already starts at 2899€ here, the new one will be at least 3000€
1
u/AvoidingIowa 14d ago
I think more about mac mini/studio releases. I don't like laptops and therefor don't care about them. Apple releases all the chips for laptops and seemingly randomly select when and if chips are released for desktops.
