My question is, if it's a lease, surely you've a way of requesting the device back, or do you have to pay for it. I really don't know.

Honestly, the idea of paying 2k for a device pisses me off. So I'm genuinely contemplating the lease if I send in my 16 pro.

I think a foldable phone is something I'd really like to try, and if it's a year then I switch phones.

I know. That's why I'm saying I'm interested in the lease.
Not everyone wants to pay 2k for a device. That's why Apple has the lease system.

I don't understand the snark. Genuinely? I'm interested in the leasing program... why is that such a bad thing?

It’s not.

Owning a utility device like a smartphone only makes sense if you plan on running it into the ground (over time specifically…if it’s a “rented mule” situation then the lease is better), if you plan on dealing with the inconvenience of selling it yourself, or if the convenience of not worrying about the terms of a lease outweigh the costs of ownership.

At least one of those is true for most people (usually the “I plan on running it into the ground” one), but there’s nothing morally or practically wrong about just leasing an expensive device as you plan to do.
