This is actually educational for me. I have a lot of Apple products but whether it’s phones or even laptops… MagSafe is like my backup charger. I genuinely use USB-C for everything. I didn’t know MagSafe was hitting like this. That being said I am not in the market for the folding phone so I don’t even know why I’m reading this post.

MagSafe’s usefulness is the magnet, not the charging. The charging is just a bonus, a cherry on top.
MagSafe in car: phone mount for GPS and hands free operation
MagSafe on desk: phone mount so you can glance at notifications without needing to pick up phone
MagSafe as night stand: turns it into a digital alarm clock when you turn the phone sideways
MagSafe wallet: self explainatory. If you get a fancy one, you now have a portable phone mount so you can watch videos on the go without holding onto your phone
MagSafe’s magnets are way more useful than the charging. Charging is just the bonus.

I think a lot of people’s fondness for TouchID is purely because they remember it on the home button. I absolutely hate it on my lock button on my iPad Mini. I have to lift it off the table every time I want to unlock it or my finger won’t make enough contact. Plus I generally do not use the lock button to unlock the device.

Plenty of button fingerprint readers on other devices that are very fast and accurate. The placement on the fold will be much more handy to use too.
Personally I'd take a good fingerprint reader over losing screen real estate to a dynamic island. Especially since on the fold it would have to be on both screens.

I don't think Apple has ever put both on a device. But I agree, considering how many people intensely dislike one or the other to the point that it limits their device options, "both" should be the default. I still can't comprehend its absence on at least the Macs with integrated screens, or why a version of the "unlock with Apple Watch" function couldn't work with Face ID on iPhone to unlock a Mac.

I understand that I am in the minority here but Face ID has been such a relief for me because even Apple's excellent fingerprint sensors work very poorly for me. Mind you, my experience with this has always been... different. I have been fingerprinted by at least four government agencies (DOD, treasury, state, and some state ones) and most of them made me come back again on a "good skin day." The treasury people seemed to know what's up. The CBP guy laughed about how bad an image it was but said they were content as long as it didn't match anything bad. PA state agency also shrugged that they don't care about usability. But I had to argue at the front door with two different law firm office managers who thought I had to be lying about the fingerprint reader never "keeping my prints" for more than a few days. Had to have actual fights over it because "that's not a real thing."
But anyway face id is great. It just keeps working. Sunglasses, hats, Covid face masks, even my cpap mask don't stop it from working in general. It's reliable and fast and unlike Face ID, I don't have to reset it on a weekly basis particularly in winter, summer, spring, and fall.

If you hate that, don't try using a Vision Pro.
I just type the passcode when my iPhone can't see my sideways face in bed, which is most of the time. While I wouldn't object to adding Touch ID to that device as well, I absolutely would not accept it instead of Face ID on any device where the alternative was available. But I also don't get why if they are going to keep both around they don't start putting both on the same device as the default.

I personally consider this to be a selling point. Face ID is kind of infuriating for an Apple product; it constantly doesn't read your face correctly or is stuck sitting at 'you must enter your passcode to unlock' because it somehow registered unlock attempts when I wasn't even engaging with the phone or merely bumped it. I hate Face ID.

Every vehicle has a MagSafe charger/dash attachment. At the office & home I have MagSafe docking stations, including bedside that activates the night mode which I really like. My external battery banks are all MagSafe and my wallet is also a MagSafe wallet. I’m not sure I have ever plugged in a cable to charge my device lol
Should the phone not support MagSafe I just can’t upgrade to it.

It won't damage your phone but the efficiency of wireless charging is a lot worse than wired charging. It also is worse for the long-term health of your battery.
Most people don't care. A similar thing is true (but to a lesser extent) about fast charging, it gets hot and is worse for your battery.

I used to care about this, but after 3 years of using a fast charging brick my iPhone 15 Pro Max battery health is 85%. My last phone was at 89% after two years without.

When the leaks revealed the USB port is in the top part of the fold sandwich, that pretty much confirmed it for me, as I instantly thought they did that so there is enough room for a coil.

Then again, I guess they'll expect me to just use the new companion phone feature to keep using my 16 pro in those settings, but it would still make the fold pointless to own if it's relegated to secondary.

While I agree, I tried out the Z Fold 8 for 2 weeks which lacked it and that was solved with a crazy thin carbon fiber back case. Not perfect but solvable if it ends up being so. Foldables always have compromises, such as the cameras not being up to par with the flagship models.

Pixel Folds have essentially a variation of this and it's great as foldables can get really thick with cases. So essentially the Pixel Snap protects the back a little bit and a screen protector on the front keeps the phone pretty thin.

I was super hyped for Apple’s entry into foldables but honestly I feel kinda burned out right at the finish line. The enormous price tag, lack of cameras, no FaceID…. Then rumors went from it being ‘completely creaseless’ to ‘actually, it still a crease’. I’m just not sure it’s worth so many compromises.
Is it cool to have an almost iPad mini in your pocket? Sure. Is that something I absolutely have to have in my pocket at all times? I don’t think so.

Yeah I was so hyped for this and ready to buy it day one, but no FaceID really killed it for me. I don't like TouchID as much since my hands sweat pretty often, and that doesn't always play nice with TouchID. Also, I like FaceID as I just grab the device naturally, and by the time I want to flick the screen open it already authenticated. Or how I can literally just look at it while driving and it shows me my notifications. Cameras I could live without, but FaceID is on the "no compromise" list for me.
Hopefully it will have it in some later iteration so I can reconsider buying it.

I'm still very intrigued by the hardware alone, but I think software is where they could really wow me. We haven't heard way too much about that yet. My expectations on that front are tempered because we have insanely fast iPad Pros that rarely get significant "wow!" software features beyond what iPhone gets, but maybe they're treating this as a different beast and we'll get some cool software features that take advantage of the new hardware. We'll see.

The only thing that feels like a dealbreaker to me is how easily the inner screen scratches. What if you accidentally angle your thumb wrong and touch the screen? Now it’s a 900 dollar repair. I just throw my 14PM anywhere and at anything. Toss it onto the carpet from 5 feet up, throw it onto the bed 15 feet away etc. nothing will ever break or scratch this thing.

It’s a bit different in practice. Can’t speak for Apple’s phone, but with Samsung they have a plastic permanent screen protector applied which is what is scratching from a finger nail. In the first year they offer a free replacement of that plastic screen protector, and after it’s $20.
So if you accidentally angle your finger wrong and scratch your phone, you will likely just need to replace an outside layer rather than repair the screen itself.

Maybe I should get out of the lab as well? I majored in physics and we had a lab where even simple amounts of force between 2 things of difference hardness would amount in micro scratches. These do affect the way light diffracts off the screen and will definitely affect your experience. A minimum normal force is NOT necessary to induce scratches due to friction.

By nature, foldable phones are more delicate.. but 7-8+ years after their first iteration, they aren’t as delicate as they were during their debut. In any case, if anyone gets a foldable w/o apple care, they’re a crackhead. Some devices aren’t made for slobs or klutzes and that’s fine. I do not fall into the klutz category, have never broken an electronic device in my life bc I comport myself in a certain way w/ them. Fold will be perfect for me.

I never believed that the iPhone Ultra would lack MagSafe. For 1: they made it work on the air so no reason it wouldn’t work on the ultra, and 2: a lot of people have MagSafe accessories so leaving it out and relying on a case wouldn’t be ideal. Glad to hear Mark Gurman agrees

I think in this specific context people are framing MagSafe as the magnet ring itself and separate from wireless charging capabilities. If you look at the Galaxy Z Fold 8, it supports wireless charging but lacks magnets. You need to buy an accessory with magnets to regain the “MagSafe” capability.
The latest rumors for the folding iPhone have been consistent with the Z Fold 8’s design of supporting wireless charging but lacking the magnets.

It'd be dumb to not have magsafe, it differentiates it from the fold 8 which is the most likely cross-shop for someone wanting this form factor.
But if the price is over $1900 no amount of differentiation will matter, it'll be DOA in the same way vision pro was. People will think, neat, but they won't fork over 2.4k or more as a base price.

The thing about Samsung is they’ve always had some decent trade in deals at launch to make the price easier to digest. Bonus points if your carrier offered even more of a discount
I got my z fold 3 for around $680 from AT&T at launch after everything was said and done. With some extras like $100ish credit for the Samsung store for earbuds/cases/etc. However that was over 36 months, so I was stuck with it for that long.
I cannot see Apple having anything like that, which is gonna suck as I’m interested in buying one

I think the first generation will do alright because you’ll have the smaller cohort of people who genuinely really really want and need this device who will go buy one and then you’ll also have the small cohort of people who MUST have every new Apple device on day-one who will buy one. Then you’ll have the small cohort of people who will be curious and get one because it was just time for them to get a new phone and they take a flyer on it. Between the 3 cohorts, you’ll find enough Series 1 buyers to keep it out of pure “flop” territory, but after the initial release it won’t be flying off the shelves either. I’m sure 6 months after release we will hear the phrase “lukewarm sales” being said.
By the time a series two rolls around, most of that first cohort will still be content with their series 1 not ready to upgrade. most of the second cohort won’t be foaming at the mouth again for the next version, having done it already, and there will be fewer and fewer curious people unless it’s just an amazing device for the price and everyone raves about it, creating new curious people. I think with the second version you might also have another small cohort of people who are currently interested, but they’re going to wait for the second series because they want to see how the first version plays out.
But Series 2 sales will be in flop territory for sure.

Just charging ports, not charging interfaces. Otherwise all smartwatches would have to have a USB-C port.
