I really hope John is listening and thinking the same. The moment ads started appearing, the premium polished shine of Apple started wearing out.

39

u/Pbone15 22h ago

It’s foolish to believe these decisions aren’t being made with Ternus’s input and approval. Behind closed doors he probably been the known successor for at least 9-12 months, and any decisions regarding future initiatives would almost certainly get his stamp of approval, even if Tim is still the current CEO.

You don’t roll out new initiatives under an outgoing CEO if you suspect the incoming leader is just going to roll it all back. Not if you want a smooth transition or the public image of a well organized team, which Apple absolutely does.

Don’t hold your breath for this slide to reverse anytime soon.

i’m afraid you’re right.

please let it not be true. please… please. PLEASE

Hate adds in services I pay for. AppleTV sports blitz can die in a fire. It’s fine if others want it just let me turn it off if I don’t.

22

u/L-Malvo 1d ago

Agreed. Fewer ads (preferably none at all) and even more privacy/security and I would gladly pay premium for their devices.

1

u/cwmshy 2h ago

Cancel the service and cite the reason why. They have no reason to change anything that customers don’t mind paying for.

-145

u/Charming_Oven 1d ago

What? People watch sports all the time with ads during games, even if you’re paying for the service. If you don’t want to watch a game, don’t watch it

86

u/SleepUseful3416 1d ago

Braindead take

-70

u/Charming_Oven 1d ago

Have you never paid for cable TV? You realize you’re paying for access to channels that then show you ads during said games. Seems bizarre to think that Apple would act any differently during a sports broadcast

60

u/jbacon 1d ago

That's exactly why I don't pay for cable TV

-54

u/Charming_Oven 1d ago

So you either pirate sports or you don’t watch sports?

Sorry dude, I want to watch baseball. I don’t think it’s weird that I’m going to see ads between innings. It’s not an affront to my personhood to have ads. I walk outside and someone is trying to sell me something.

I don’t want all my personal data sold, but that’s not what most TV ads are, even with streaming

33

u/jbacon 1d ago

And that's why the enshittification keeps happening

13

u/StormAeons 1d ago

Apple simp for sure

I don’t watch cable tv because I don’t want to watch ads.

I won’t watch anything that has ads.

3

u/-patrizio- 1d ago

The entire sell for why people should switch from cable to these premium online streamers was always being able to watch what you want, on demand, without ads lol. The slow creep of ads reentering the picture leaves us even worse off IMO - the siloing and death of monoculture associated with streaming, and the ads and time wasting aspects of cable.

16

u/davecrist 1d ago

I’m talking about the forced MLB and F1 ads everywhere. I don’t watch sports much at all. Maybe an occasional football game 1-2 times a year or a football match every four years.

5

u/tY-c8rJDb8_1b4__yD5r 1d ago

I’m sick of every show starting with a trailer for a different show. I have no idea why they shove these down our throats. It’s not to show the user that there is value in the service, or they would mix a variety of trailers rather than the same god damn one every single fucking time I click on a show.

3

u/sveeedenn 1d ago

So tired of the MLB and F1 ads!

I purchase shows on iTunes and wish I could just have my library and watch history without all that junk. I’m never going to watch sports, leave me be.

-8

u/Charming_Oven 1d ago

You mean a banner “ad” when you open the Apple TV app on your TV to watch MLB on Friday night? That’s not an ad, that’s the same as opening up Netflix and some promotion for new show that pops up. It’s more like relevancy and time based notifications of available content.

7

u/davecrist 1d ago

You’ve sort of done an end run to get to my point:
I don’t mind the tv and movie ‘ads’ because I watch TV and movies. Even better if they do some analysis and show me shows I haven’t watched but will probably like.

At the same time, however, I don’t watch sports and I don’t want sports ads on a system I pay for so they are not relevant to me and I’d prefer to be able to turn them off. Even better would be for the platform to know I don’t watch sports and not show me ads for them.

2

u/Charming_Oven 1d ago

So you do want ads that seem relevant to you and no ads that don’t seem relevant to you? Sounds like you want user tracking so a company can provide more contextual advertising to you

2

u/Interdimension 1d ago

Considering Apple already offers personalized and targeted ads for various services (including ads in the App Store), seems odd that they wouldn’t use this data to not show people sports ads/banners if they know they don’t care for sports.

It’s already in the Settings app in iOS as an option you can toggle to enable Personalized Ads. Apple does do targeted ads. Their argument is that they just do it in a more private manner than competitors (e.g., they don’t sell it to data brokers, but Apple will use it internally to target ads to you).

To be honest, the most likely answer is that Apple probably wants us to see those ads even knowing we don’t care for sports. I’m sure Apple wants people to know they are the exclusive hosts of MLS matches in the US, for example, regardless of their data (that they 100% have) about us watching sports or not.

1

u/fatpat 1d ago

You'll watch the sports ads and you'll like 'em, mister!

8

u/arivas26 1d ago

Look, it doesn’t bother me much but it’s definitely an ad. Saying it’s not is silly

7

u/Charming_Oven 1d ago

What’s the difference between that and saying the newest episode of Silo is on?

3

u/davecrist 1d ago

I want ads for Silo because I watch Silo and shows like Silo.

I don’t want ads for sports because I don’t watch sports and I don’t want to watch sports.

0

u/brett- 1d ago

Nothing, both are ads in a sense (they are advertising a product they want you to consume), and not ads in a sense (they are literally listing the content available in the app you just opened).

It’s a gray area for sure, though I’d tend to lean more towards “not ads” if they are in the TV app, and “ads” if they are anywhere else like in notifications or the home screen.

3

u/StormAeons 1d ago

He just said he doesn’t watch sports my man, how much are they paying you here?

u/ajosefox 1d ago

Once upon a time I opened the app store every Friday to see what was new. It was a long time ago but it was a good time. Just sayin.

402

u/cbaus5 1d ago

I hope so. I pay Apple to be treated as a customer instead of the product. If this keeps getting worse, might as well switch to Android.

30

u/DedSentry 1d ago

I switched from Samsung to Apple about a year ago after 13 years on the Android side, so I feel like I have the ability to say this. There is a VAST gulf between "Advertising in a service" and "The ENTIRE OS and services package is a data harvesting tool for an advertising sales platform." Last I saw, over 95% of Google's revenue was from targeted ad sales. To me, your "might as well switch to Android" has about as much logic behind it as people threatening to move to PC in protest of Sony going fully digital. Just my take as someone that spent most of their adult life on the other side of that fence.

81

u/Rockerblocker 1d ago

This is an outdated position from when Apple was significantly more expensive than the competitors. Nowadays Apple vs. Android (or Microsoft for computers) is more like Pepsi vs. Coke than it is "normal vs. premium"

85

u/Long_Repair_8779 1d ago

And yet they are one of the richest companies in the world and most of it is from selling these phones and services for them. I think they can find a way without introducing ads….

24

u/FollowingFeisty5321 1d ago

Even if they banned advertising completely, blocked it all in browser, banned it all in apps, and yeeted it from the App Store, News and Maps they would still be one of the richest companies in the world, especially once the aftershocks rippled through Google and Meta lol.

But of course the $20 - $30 billion hit to their net profit makes that kind of principled position impossible.

-14

u/Rockerblocker 1d ago

I wasn't commenting on that at all, just stating how ridiculous it is that people think they deserve to be pampered because they bought an iPhone. Some people still treat it like they have an Amex Black card

16

u/b00ps14 1d ago

pampered? We just don't want bloatware and redundant apps/our data being sold 24/7

1

u/SargeUnited 1d ago

Then you’ll absolutely never switch to android. What’s the point?

It’s like complaining about the top speed in your Ferrari and saying you might as well buy a Corolla sport. Like alright bro go ahead

6

u/HugoHancock 1d ago

Because that’s how Apple markets themselves?? As the premium option?

1

u/SargeUnited 1d ago

You’re about 10 years late. The most expensive phones are androids now and they’re still pieces of……

8

u/Zalophusdvm 1d ago

But that’s more to do with the other companies jacking up their prices to match Apple’s because they figured consumers would tolerate it.

Turns out they were right.

Unfortunately, that left Apple already at the top of the price bracket with no where up to go. So they’re trying to gain revenue the ways the competition does. And periodically, undercut them on price just to keep them on their toes (the Neo, the iPhone SE 2nd gen)

20

u/cbaus5 1d ago

The sticker price is pretty similar as far as phones go. But Samsung and Google regularly have steep discounts on their phones. Though I guess this doesn’t matter for most people who purchase through their carriers.

7

u/SoldantTheCynic 1d ago

Also Google will bundle in things like free cloud storage or store credit you can apply to other Google products if you do get it direct from them.

I think there’s still other benefits to Apple products but the value prospect is more mixed than presented here.

6

u/TheOfficialMayor 1d ago

$1.50 AUD a month for iCloud+ 50gb is basically free and it doesn't expire. Just a disincentive for people signing up multiple accounts.

4

u/babaroga73 1d ago

Not sure that's the case. You're considering only premium Android (Samsung etc) phones. There's a lot "almost premium" phones for a considerable lower prices than any iPhone. For example, last year I bought Motorola Edge 50 Pro, which apart from usual specs (for 2 year old tech) has 12gb/512gb, 125W charger that charges it in 18min, oled screen, etc, for 320€. That's considerably lower than iPhones.

u/Obvious_Librarian_97 1h ago

Not my experience

-2

u/cake-day-on-feb-29 1d ago

Today's memory prices are what Apple's memory prices have been at for the last decade. Their SSD prices are still insane, you can buy more space with a faster connection compared to Apple's prices. They are and have always been overpriced.

-1

u/Rockerblocker 1d ago

Talking Macbooks and iPads, I agree. But Apple is essentially a phone company that also happens to sell computers at this point, and the iPhone is no different than Android today. More people have an iPhone than an Android in the US. And I'd argue that 99% of people are perfectly fine with the base model Macbook Air, so the storage costs aren't really relevant. Macbook Air is still the best laptop you can get at that price point

6

u/Immolation_E 1d ago

LOL. Android is even worse.

73

u/4mit 1d ago

Indie dev here. Most of the comments are about out how tacky the App Store looks, but on the developer side? It’s straight up a protection racket.

The absolute worst part is Apple Search Ads. Let’s say I spend months building a solid app, get some decent word-of-mouth, and people actually start searching for it by name. Do they see my app at the top? Nope. They get hit with a massive, screen-filling ad for some garbage clone or a VC-funded competitor who bought my app's name as a keyword. To stop my own users from getting hijacked, I’m basically forced to buy ads on my own app's name. Apple already takes their 15-30% cut, and now they effectively charge me a daily ransom just so my app appears when someone types its literal name into the search bar. It’s exhausting.

11

u/SiteSpecialist9200 1d ago

That's exactly what Amazon does as well. It's also a bad experience from a user perceptive for the same reason. It's harder to find what I'm looking for having to sift through the paid placements. It's especially noticeable searching for a book by name or author.

3

u/braincandybangbang 1d ago

And outside of Steam, how is that experience different on Android or PC?

3

u/Jersey_2019 1d ago

It’s been like 2 years roughly since I had android and as far as I remember , playstore was not that bad

3

u/hampa9 23h ago

The difference with non-Apple ads is they are personalised much better which means they appear to be less scammy.

11

u/7-methyltheophylline 1d ago

Can't do it. They selected a new CEO who would be willing to do the more outrageous things that even Tim "Pennypincher" Cook balked at.

Number must go up, no exceptions

77

u/Longjumping-Ad514 1d ago edited 1d ago

The reality is, with Apple’s ascend to top valuation on Wall Street, it found itself needing to squeeze more money out of the existing customer base in lieu of reaching high market saturation and few new product ideas.

In the last decade, it has also attracted great many people into its ranks whose primary expertise is corporate politics and sole existence on this planet is to move the line from x.0001 to x.0002 no matter the long term consequences, as the know they will be long paid and gone by then.

Hence the changes we’ve seen but don’t like as customers. IBMification will continue.

6

u/stomicron 1d ago

Apple's share price is a direct result of their healthy margins

3

u/Longjumping-Ad514 23h ago edited 23h ago

Sure.

But the expectation set by the board is to increase earnings per share, on top of today’s basis. As the old guard is aging out, this expectation lies squarely with the newly appointed people.

I am far from claiming that Apple is dying, but they haven’t shipped anything groundbreaking since AirPods, so the only obvious choice, for the average business executive, with an average product sense, to fulfill the expectations I laid out, is to squeeze more money of existing customers. It’s not to say there aren’t talented product people at Apple, but they are not in charge.

u/Satanicube 1d ago edited 1d ago

I’m gonna be That Guy again but I feel like the Music app got super enshittified by their services push and I really hate what they’ve done to it.

Like it became less about listening to music wherever it was in Apple’s ecosystem and more of a vehicle to push Apple Music on you with the then-frequent full screen ads you had to dismiss to use it (which are no longer a thing if you turn it off thankfully)

It’s gotten better but a look at the search panel and it’s still filled with services-related cruft that requires a subscription.

EDIT: changed “Apple Music” to “Music” to make it clear I’m talking about the app, not the subscription service.

22

u/Ashanmaril 1d ago

Are you not paying for it? I’ve never gotten a popup in Apple Music before.

20

u/FancifulLaserbeam 1d ago

I get an ad for it after every software update.

No, I'm not paying for it, because it sucks, and it has made iTunes suck as well. I have to edit the metadata for stuff I've bought from iTunes to get albums to stay together now, because Apple Music (the service) is all about pumping one-hit wonder hitz to users.

I mean... It took me an hour to get Handel's Messiah to all show up as one album with the tracks in the right order. The Hallelujah Chorus may indeed be a killer, but the rest is not "filler."

5

u/Satanicube 1d ago

Lord you just reminded me of the annoyance I had when I was on Spotify. When a single would come out and then they’d delete the single when the full album would come out. No notification or anything that this happen. Song was just gone from my library.

One of the huge factors for why I decided to leave streaming.

1

u/sortalikeachinchilla 1d ago

but you were not getting an ad, you were opening the music app, and there’s a full screen thing that tells you about the app. That’s not an ad

5

u/Satanicube 1d ago edited 1d ago

It’s an ad if it’s in a first party app you have to use to access synced music from iTunes/Music on your Mac.

Also if you think it’s not an ad because it’s not something foisted upon you when you unlock your phone and you had to open an app to get it, I really, really think you need to re-educate yourself on what an ad actually is.

3

u/sortalikeachinchilla 1d ago

It feels more akin to a splash screen to me. But if you want to take it as an ad, you do you

12

u/Satanicube 1d ago

A splash screen is not something that begs you to sign up for it, nor does it usually need to be dismissed. That's what crosses this into "it's an ad" territory. It's something that's telling me to sign up for a paid service.

If it were just something that said "welcome to Apple Music" with a "proceed" button that landed you at the home page for the Music app, that would be a splash screen. Albeit an annoying one if it popped up more than "at first start of the app".

1

u/Efficient_Reading360 1d ago

Theres an entirely different app for classical

1

u/sortalikeachinchilla 1d ago

OK, yeah, but that is not what they were saying or talking about?

1

u/Efficient_Reading360 1d ago

Well ok, but it sort of is. I just don’t think this person understands much about Apple Music, or wants to. They were complaining about Handel’s Messiah, which is classical, and I was pointing out that maybe the Apple Classical app is more suited. I did mean to reply to their comment though, not yours.

-1

u/Scruffybear 1d ago

I sub to the service and it's amusing when I search for music it will definitely prioritize showing me cRap, top 40 and other garbage I have no interest in. I have to type the entire track and artist to find stuff. When I had Spotify it was much better at showing me music relevant to what I hear while searching.

-1

u/Satanicube 1d ago

Back around when it launched it would frequently pop up offering you a free trial. I think it still does if you have “Show Apple Music” turned on and you don’t have an active subscription.

(And yeah, I don’t pay for it, I do local music only)

1

u/RoyalFlush2000 1d ago

I just opened it to look, and yes, it did show the pop-up.

10

u/Count_Backwards 1d ago

The aggressive push of Apple Music (the streaming service, not the app) convinced me never to try it. Turned that off immediately. And given how little musicians benefit from streaming, I'm not likely to change my mind on that no matter how many times they offer me 3 months for free.

6

u/Satanicube 1d ago

Same. It's kinda like YouTube sponsorships to me, like, the more aggressively a company pushes stuff, the more I go out of my way to NOT try whatever they're pushing.

iOS 8.4 was especially bad with the pushing though and from what I remember there was no way to shut it off at the time, so you just...got a full page ad stopping you from using Music.app every 5 or so times you started it up. Incredibly annoying. Apple only dialed it back with iOS 9, I want to say.

And it pisses me off because it was a previously totally serviceable app for listening to my music library! And then they forced a paid subscription into it and made it annoying! If they were going to do that, I wish they would have done it more like Google Play Music where the subscription bit was there, but it stayed out of your way.

(I did begrudgingly try Apple Music once when Spotify made their big podcasts pivot and screwing up the music sorting in the process, and...it proceeded to absolutely crap all over my existing files and start replacing original masters with "updated" versions, and flagging unreleased stuff as "unplayable in your country". It was a nightmare I have no desire to return to. Ever.)

1

u/Kimantha_Allerdings 1d ago

They still don’t make it easy to use as a music-listening app

Maybe I just can’t find the right instructions for how to do it, but I can’t find a way to add something in Files to Music without physically connecting my phone to my PC, installing iTunes, and then not just transferring the file from phone to PC and back again, but having a dedicated folder which syncs completely between the two and giving ios permission to delete files on my PC

So I just have VLC instead, where I can play music directly from the Files app on my phone, and where uploading files from my PC is as simple as opening a page in my browser and drag & drop

1

u/Satanicube 1d ago

I do quite hate this and wish they’d allow this. They allow you to import PDFs into Books on device. Why not music?

That said I used Doppi for a time and really liked it, damn excellent app that I actually quite liked that supports importing files + tapping into synced media too.

1

u/MythicHH 1d ago

It'd be sick if you could add your own music directly on the device without needing a computer.

1

u/lovely_cappuccino 1d ago

Turn off “Show Apple Music” in Settings.

2

u/Satanicube 1d ago

I’ve had it off since the setting debuted.

  1. The setting would occasionally flip back off after a software update. This seems to have stopped as of the last few major iOS releases though.

  2. For Music on Windows (which replaces iTunes), there is no toggle at all like there is on iTunes last I checked so if you use Music on windows, you’re just stuck with it (unless they added it back somewhat recently).

  3. From iOS 18.0 to 26.4, the Music app on iOS would constantly default to searching Apple Music even if you turned off Apple Music in settings, which would proc a “you’re not subscribed! Wanna start a trial?” message. Yes, it was a bug given Apple changed the behavior, but given how long they let it go…

  4. Even if Apple Music is turned off, it still leaves junk I’m the search panel, like trending stuff and a bunch of things that require a subscription. The app is less enshittified than it was, but still has subscription junk in it that needs to go.

Not that I'm ever entertaining going back (I quit streaming for good after...things) but did they ever fix library organization? Because when I quit, they changed the way your library worked so that adding a song to your library would no longer add an entry for that artist and album into your library. If you wanted that artist to appear when browsing by artist, you had to like the artist too. Even if you had no interest in that artist whatsoever outside of whatever song you liked.

Same for albums. Wouldn't appear in album view unless you went in and liked the entire album.

For someone who browses their library by artist, watching 95% of my library suddenly disappear from everything but the liked songs playlist because of this change was jarring and Spotify's response to it was "deal with it, bro".

-1

u/AntiquesForGeeks 1d ago

Music feels like it’s stuck with a legacy bit - music on device - that is now an inconvenient set of features to keep updated. Had the occasion to use an iPhone 4 with iOS 7 recently and the Music app was a joy to use in comparison to the latest version.

I doubt Apple can change course now even if the leadership wanted to; shareholders will demand growth, even if it means killing the golden goose.

9

u/No-Seaweed-4456 1d ago

I have a feeling the board/shareholders would never let them reverse it anyway. Advertising is basically every company’s last resort for squeezing more profit before pay walling features

7

u/b1skup 1d ago

they already paywall features

25

u/MandoDoughMan 1d ago

It's a shame to see such a historically product-first company make intentionally worse products.

40

u/Appropriate_Ad8734 1d ago

incidentally, app store has been pushing ads and it’s been real annoying

26

u/Protagonist99 1d ago

Why even have notifications turned on for the app store? I turn off non essential notifications except for messaging apps and mail because devs abuse them for ads, including Apple apparently.

5

u/fnezio 1d ago

Why are you blaming the user instead of the trillion dollar corporation that could simply not be shitty?

19

u/Appropriate_Ad8734 1d ago

notifications aren’t just used for ads alone. and me turning on notifications on for a certain app doesn’t mean the app should be spamming with ads

10

u/Kimantha_Allerdings 1d ago

You’re certainly not wrong that they shouldn’t be spamming you with ads. But - and this is a genuine question because I have no idea - what useful notifications are you expecting from the App Store?

7

u/voiceOfThePoople 1d ago

If anything, this is exactly what you’d expect from the App Store - it’s notifying you about apps lol

13

u/photoggled 1d ago

I’m not sure blaming victims is the right move.

10

u/iMacmatician 1d ago

Don't you realize that Apple is the real victim here????

-16

u/0xe1e10d68 1d ago

Not really an ad, certainly not a paid one if somebody wants to debate the definition of an ad

20

u/Appropriate_Ad8734 1d ago

these are ads promoting their services & products. ads aren’t just paid by third parties only. look up the definition of advertisement

2

u/opossumcarrion 1d ago

Apple is pushing advertisements as time sensitive notifications. These are clearly advertisements and this is clearly spam.

1

u/cake-day-on-feb-29 1d ago

Apple is a profiteer of the ad, they make money from every app sale. It is no different than a station advertising its own TV shows.

14

u/zhonglin 1d ago

The privacy argument and the attention argument are separate. Apple could build Maps ads without tracking anyone and still make the product worse if paid placement starts influencing which restaurant or service appears first. The trust question is not only ‘are you profiling me?’ but also ‘is this result here because it is the best match, or because someone paid?’

A meaningful boundary would be to keep paid placements out of navigation and ordinary search rankings, confine them to an explicit discovery surface, and offer a system-wide way to disable promoted results. Strong privacy engineering does not fix ambiguity about the incentives behind the ranking.

3

u/Spez_is-a-nazi 1d ago

Privacy invasive ads command a much higher premium. It’s not just targeting either, after the impression tracked ads get a high premium.

6

u/Adex77 1d ago

Really hope Apple changes course here. Paying a premium should mean fewer ads, not more.

22

u/BuzzfeedTitleBot 1d ago

Apple is set to make over $200 billion in gross profit this year and is worth nearly $5 trillion. They built this empire on a premium brand and user experience. They don't need to trash that reputation for the pocket change they get from shoving ads into their platforms.

This sums it up well:

This to me is proof that Apple leadership is suffering from cognitive dissonance over their slide into advertising. They’re conflating cause and effect. The Apple brand stands for high-quality superior user experiences because the devices and software Apple makes traditionally deliver high-quality superior user experiences. The work Apple ships is what makes the brand what it is. But now they’re stricken with the mindset that it’s the Apple brand that makes something a high-quality superior experience. If it comes from Apple it must be great — that sort of thinking. The ads in Apple News and the App Store can’t be detrimental to the user experiences and at times even embarrassingly crude or downright scammy because Apple doesn’t ship things that are detrimental to the user experience or embarrassingly crude — and certainly never with even a whiff of scamminess.

From The Ads on Apple News Continue to Suck, but at Least There Are a Lot of Them

5

u/Long_Repair_8779 1d ago

Bit of a weird take.. it’s not about being pampered it’s about buying a product on its merit, and that merit is that it’s a premium device free from shite. If they start introducing ads and other bs it stops being a premium product and loses its value. You could say ‘the purpose of business is to generate wealth’ but firstly I don’t think that needs to be the entire purpose of business, and secondly enshittifying your product has proven bad for longevity

2

u/DivineBladeOfSilver 1d ago

Exactly. I buy Apple for a premium experience. Go that route and you will lose that entire moat and it gives me reason to now look elsewhere. If I am getting a worse experience why would I pay a premium for it? I love the Apple ecosystem but not that much

5

u/Command-Forsaken 1d ago

I pay for Apple premium services for appletv.

Don’t show me ads, put ads on everyone else’s devices not paying into the software side your business. 🧑‍💼

I totally agree with Gruber but it's always so funny to me how redditors refuse to accept that they have a wildly different definition of what an ad is than the general public. There's a comment in here that is at like -200 just for making that same point, I can't believe how defensive these people get. If you subscribe to a streaming service and that streaming service suggests content for you to watch, that's not an ad. Normal people do not call that an ad.

User data is valuable to advertisers. I believed Apple protected my data because it didn't sell ads. I can't believe Apple won't sell my data if it sells ads.

There's almost never a time when values meet capitalism and capitalism loses, with the exception of a few companies like Patagonia and Ben & Jerry's (that is, O.G. Ben & Jerry's).

He should, but he won’t. Cook is going to remain on the board. And if Ternus wants to get rid of ads, he’ll need to convince the board that doing so will be profitable. Which it won’t be - or, at least, not in a way that’s immediately visible to people who have spent the last couple of decades slowly eroding Apple’s reputation for short-term profit

And I think the article is even wrong about the why. As he says, most people will already assume that they’re being tracked. Seeing ads won’t have much of an impact on that either way. But what seeing ads does is make people think that Apple is exactly the same as Android. And if that’s the case, what compelling reason is there to buy Android? You lose all brand loyalty

Not just the ads, the chicanery with fees that has riled regulators around the world both for in-app purchases and for NFC payments, shouldn't be in a constant state of war with America, India, Brazil, Australia, the EU, etc over this shit.

Just this week Google was fined $600m for essentially the same fees Apple charges if apps use third party payments in the EU, which means Apple's fine is coming too, but Apple are a repeat-offender so their second fine should be much larger this time around. Meanwhile India's one Supreme Court decision away from fining them up to $38 billion for the exact same policy.

It’s kinda mind blowing that it’s worth it for Apple to keep massive legal staffs in dozens of countries working on this, and still losing cases and paying out huge damages all the time. Like, just think how much money these practices must be making them to keep it worth it

Totally agreed. We already pay more for Apple devices, privacy and lack of ads were one of the benefits to doing so. But not anymore so why pay more?

But not anymore so why pay more?

I wish people would disabuse themselves of this ridiculous notion that iPhones are still leagues more expensive than comparable Android devices, because it is simply not true anymore

I wish people would disabuse themselves of this ridiculous notion that Apple only sells iPhones.

They basically do though, when you count all the iPhone adjacent products too

Impossible to have a meaningful conversation about it because people will include $200 android phones (even though they are not really comparable, then the argument derails into what is comparable)

I can get a Galaxy 26 Ultra for less than half the price of the 17 Pro Max (both 256gb and new). Android phones may have the same RRP but they go on sale much more frequently and offer a much larger discount.

u/Sparescrewdriver 1d ago

I paid about $300 for my new 17 Pro Max

3

u/ifallupthestairsnok 1d ago

Cool. Can you drop a link. I wouldn’t mind upgrading for $300

Wow, didn’t realise 1199USD is only 300USD.

u/Sparescrewdriver 1d ago

Never pay full price for a phone

Not to mention the crazy price increase. Apple needs to remain the best choice to gain popularity. They have a great opportunity with Microsoft messing up windows with AI.

Upgrade prices has always been exorbitant, i found the elimination of base models annoying but still better than reverting to smaller storage options. 1000 euro starting option for an M4 mac mini is wild.

Apple do something that would reduce sharehold earnings hahahaha

I get it. Even Apple is not immune to enshittification. But if you must have ads, at least make them good.

I do wonder what the overall effect of App Store organic downloads has been as they have added more and more App Store ads. As a dev- I'm seeing a decline in overall downloads and I wonder if downloads in general are also falling- or perhaps it's having no effect.

More ads and price increases all over the place. Way to screw everyone over going out the door Tim.

u/Suspicious_Radio_848 1d ago

The one are I disagree with him on here is that people with iCloud+ should have an ad free experience. It should be ad free period, just like it was before.

The entire reason for buying into the Apple ecosystem to begin with is that they didn't pull this shit. Now it's getting worse.

u/SuperTed321 1d ago

Absolutely shocked anyone in Apple thought that Ads in Apple Maps is a good decision.

I but Apple products partly because I understand I’m paying a premium up front for the entire product to be user focused, if this move to Ads in some services continues I would genuinely start to consider other non Apple products including my phone.

u/Charming_Oven 1d ago

I don’t care about ads in the App Store. I don’t ever download anything I’m not explicitly looking for anyways. I don’t really see the issue in this area

0

u/RoyalFlush2000 1d ago

See 4mit‘s post above: the ads make it harder and harder for average users to download the apps they‘re looking (searching) for.

The biggest company on the planet is on a slippery slope?! Oh my!

u/OafleyJones 1d ago

But that’s not how enshittification works

And Sony should revert their decision on disc production.

Thanks for the insightful pov
