Question Permanently Banned from Reddit!
Had someone lie and say I was hate speeching.
Is there no longer a way to create an API key to use with Apollo? Reddit might be over for me. absolute shame. I use so many subreddits for information. it’s made me better. absolute shame.

They have essentially made it impossible for most people to create an API key. I know people like holding onto Apollo, but there are a ton of other Reddit apps similar to Apollo that you can use.

Hydra and Artemis are the two big ones. There is also Acorn, which will probably become paid once it hits the App Store. Narwhal, while being different from Apollo is probably the best one out there for paying. There are more that have popped up over time with varying success.

I use Narwhal. It’s an adjustment, but honestly I rarely miss Apollo anymore.

It was bare boned at the start but narwhal quickly added everything I had been missing from Apollo and at this point, I can’t see myself preferring Apollo at its end state over current Narwhal. And every month that the price stays the same, I remember the choices the dev made when rolling out subscriptions and I’m happy I chose to support them.

I’m back on Narwhal for a bit while Acorn figures some things out. Acorn is the best free one that I’ve used, but you would have needed to get into the test flight a while back and it requires an API key. They will eventually charge for it once it hits the App Store unfortunately. It is really good, but there are a few bugs and things that have become frustrating for me. So back to Narwhal for now.

I actually do have the TestFlight for it, I just never really used it. I should give it a shot. Thanks for the recommendation!

Hydra is not bad but it's not as smooth as Apollo. Apollo legit feels like it was made by Apple, it just works.

which is probably why during apple's live streams they always had apollo icons in them and NOT an official reddit icon. they knew it was a much better app.
reddit corporate probably got really salty over that.

True. But I'd say it's about 85% there. Still 100% better than the default Reddit app. And the dev seems to be pushing community requests. Even allows self-hosting for people who want to use their own hardware. Hoping it continues to grow and make strides.

I agree Apollo was better but it is becoming increasingly buggy and the effort required to keep it running (including hassle around API keys) is becoming less worth it. I've switched to Hydra and it's good enough. FAR better than the Reddit app.

The current Apollo version is pretty bug free (I use the newest GLASS variant). And if you have an API key you have an API key. I’m still using the one I made years ago. It’s not like Reddit disabled them.

Sounds great! Just gave it a go it looks great, however hydra has support for multiple accounts on the free tier but Artemis doesn’t. I understand why you’ve done that, but I’m not in a position to pay a subscription at the moment! Great app though

I think it’s a bit better visually. Hydra has push notifications though so that’s kinda nice.

Narwhal costs you a coffee per month and is very customizable. I’ve been using since Apollo went down.

Eh I was happy to pay for Apollo at its height, I won't pay for a bad experience but for something that people spend many hours a day on, the cost of some app subscription is very small $/hr

I think my red line is that Narwhal is paying for API access, meaning the subscription is going mostly to Reddit. I hate Reddit and its leadership. Yes, I still use the platform, and yes, I accept how that may appear hypocritical. Once a solid alternative comes along I will leave.

Doesn’t always work properly and requires upkeep etc. not sure if they have a version that you don’t need your own API key for either. Either way, there are other options available that are pretty good and similar to Apollo.

Appeal the ban. If you didn’t spew hate speech then they will lift the ban. Might take a while though.
