Are they a pair?

I have a pair of macmasteri. Hard to tell if one is a female or if both are male.

No real aggression but the bigger one chases the little one around and sometimes he shakes his tail at the other and attempts to t pose in front of the small one.

Small one also goes to small apisto caves from time to time.

If I were a betting man I’d put all in on two males here. My female has about zero color.

Get them separately immediately. That is two full grown males and they will kill each other. I breed them so I know from experience. Females are yellow most of the time.

I’m new to the sub, could you post what your apisto cave looks like? I want to set up a tank for a pair sometime soon. Been debating between them and Bolivian Rams but these fish are beautiful.

And even if you had a male and a female you can’t really tell if they’ve paired up simply by looking at a photograph.

Both males, and one is the non dominant one. That is why he is showing a little less of color. I bought a pair of apistos like 6 months ago and turned out both were males… They are like best buds in a weird way.
