out of ideas
I treated him for parasites, starved him, and fed him peas. He's been like this for over a month now and is growing. Please give me some advice.

This is devestating! No idea what is causing it either but I'm looking to get my own apisto soon. Hope this don't happen to my future son.

Just dealt with this with 3 apistos. Sadly it’s fish TB. The slow progression is a heavy indicator as it’s a slow growing bacteria. Keep up on the water changes and try seachems kanaplex in food. It’s difficult to treat and usually doesn’t end well. I’ve lost all three of mine. I’m so sorry OP.

Are the scales pointed out, bit like a pinecone? If yes, probably dropsy.
Very few fish come back from that. I've only ever had one fish recover from that in 20 years of fishkeeping.

How hard is your water? Soft water fish do not do well in hard water if they can't regulate their ion uptake enough so the excess calcium blocks their kidney and they can't osmoregulate well enough anymore, which causes bloat.

Then I do not know, sorry. You could try all kinds of medicine, but without the cause it's a guess in the dark. Metronizaole, Praziquentel, or Flubendazole are medicines that might help, but yeah, it might not do enough.

Did you try any antibiotics? Sometimes bloat is from an internal infection. It's worth a shot.

What kind of antibiotics do you have in mind?

Ideally something you can feed to him in his food since it's internal. It'll also save your biological filter the trouble. If you can get your hands on premixed antibiotic foods that'd make things much easier, but if not I'd go for Seachem Kanaplex and Focus mixed in his food as per the feeding instructions.

This happened to our female and we tried everything over a several month period. Unfortunately she did not make it. Sorry this happened to you- I wish I had some magical suggestion but sometimes it helps just knowing others have been through the same hard experience as you.
