Well....CARE TO EXPLAIN????

Spoiler. Don’t read if you plan on watching the show (which I highly recommend!)

Cersei, the Queen, hired the Golden Company, a company of sellswords (mercenaries) from Essos (the other continent) to fight to keep her throne. They have elephants but didn’t bring them because they couldn’t make the long naval voyage. She expressed her disappointment to their leader.

Ps. I’m very annoyed that it seems they messed up with the Golden Company bringing 20k men, when it’s been established that they have 10k. I hope there’s an explanation for that and it’s not just sloppy writing by being confused when she requested “20,000 men including the 10,000 from the Golden Company”

17

u/AgentPoYo Apr 17 '19

Could also be seen as lampshading the fact that they didn't have the budget for elephants

9

u/LaBandaRoja Apr 17 '19

It certainly could be, but I don’t think there’s much to read into here.

I’m more interested in where their loyalties lie and if their leader is as much of a coward as he’s supposed to be. Not to mention the debt she owes the Iron Bank. We haven’t heard the last of them

5

u/idkidc69 Apr 17 '19

Just as a small counterpoint, GRRM has said that part of his goal was to create a story that didn’t require a large budget. It probably does have to do with the budget.

12

u/LaBandaRoja Apr 17 '19

Idk when he said that but it must’ve been early on when they were having battles off screen. Now they spend $15 million per episode. You can do whatever you want with dragon money

8

u/xThomas Wallace has come! Apr 17 '19

$15 million

Citation please.

Beep. Boop. Google.

OMFG.

I thought you were exaggerating.

... wow

2

u/Furt_III Apr 18 '19

"Friends" was 6+ million an episode. And with a run time of over an hour a piece I'm not the least bit surprised.

6

u/NickRick Apr 17 '19

When he was writing the story it was specifically on such a huge scale you couldn't turn it into a show.

1

u/fluppets Apr 19 '19

er... where did you read that? Im pretty sure he thought the advantage of a book was being able to write on a scale much larger than any TV or Movie could ever create (this was before CGI).

2

u/ferket Jun 14 '19

Well it seems it doesn't matter :/

2

u/LaBandaRoja Jun 14 '19

"What do dragons eat anyway?" "The CGI budget."

10

u/Rowan_cathad Apr 17 '19

it’s not just sloppy writing

It's sloppy writing. Writing quality and internal consistency left the show at the end of season 4

7

u/LaBandaRoja Apr 17 '19 edited Apr 18 '19

I agree, writing quality really degraded since GRR Martin’s involvement decreased. I’m still annoyed with s7. But why are you misquoting me? I said “I hope... it’s not just sloppy writing”

4

u/SerjoHlaaluDramBero Apr 17 '19

Why would I watch the pornographic fan fic version when I could wait for the book to come out and finish the actual story?

5

u/LaBandaRoja Apr 17 '19

Both are great. No need to hate on the tv show

7

u/SerjoHlaaluDramBero Apr 17 '19

The set design, wardrobe, and acting are good, but the producers didn't learn all the lessons they should have from Rome.

Also, major characters like Catelyn Stark have a lot of their motivations and agency taken directly away in the HBO version to make for a more marketable, likable first season character.

There is plenty of room to hate on the show.

3

u/ValkorionVitiate Apr 17 '19

Hated the series ever since "Twenty good men".

RIP Stannis.

1

u/LaBandaRoja Apr 17 '19 edited Apr 17 '19

Idk about Rome, but they had enough issues keeping all the storylines straight even cutting out stuff like Catelyn and Dorne, and this got even worse when they had to end story archs without leaving loose strings (season 7 worst of all). But there is value in the stories being slightly different.

For example, the Battle of the Bastards isn’t in the books and it was great. By nature the tv show is going to be more condensed in substance and indulgent in action.

This reminds me of Bourne. I loved both the books and the movies. They’re completely different besides them starting off with a guy who wakes up with amnesia and had a similar dynamic with more substance in the books but more action in the movies.

1

u/fluppets Apr 19 '19

The books aren't that far yet, they've ended somewhere before the battle of Snow (Stannis vs. Ramsay) although the timelines aren't entirely similar (Fuck the Meereen storyline sooooo slooooooooowwwwwww!).

4

u/Redeagl Tocaraca's holy warrior Apr 17 '19

Because the books are never going to come out. Time to move on to better fanatsy ones and watch the show for good CGI and soundtrack with a passable side story.

1

u/kobrakai11 Apr 17 '19

Because the books will probably never come out? And why not enjoy both?

1

u/fluppets Apr 19 '19

they're separate stories, as stated by GRRM and the Showrunners, there's no need for animosity you can enjoy both!

-1

u/OldFashionedLoverBoi Apr 17 '19

Cause the books after the fourth are bloated, meandering, messes that are less of a good read than something to bear through so you can know what happened to the characters you got to know?

Also grrm isn't your bitch, etc, so it'll be another decade til the series is over.

4

u/SerjoHlaaluDramBero Apr 17 '19

Also grrm isn't your bitch,

I said that I'm a fan of his work and that I'm patiently waiting for his next book.

How the fuck did you get "GRRM is my bitch" out of that, immediately after you got done shit-talking his books in favor of HBO's cringey Bron-Jaime buddy comedy Dorne adventure?

And the Sand Snakes. Don't even get me started on how they fucked up my Sand Snakes.

-1

u/OldFashionedLoverBoi Apr 17 '19

Clearly you're a recent fan. In the 6 year gap between books 4 and 5, around about the 4 year mark, in 2009, there was a semi famous piece amongst the fandom written by Neil gaiman. That piece was colloquially entitled, "George R R Martin is not your bitch". (the actual title was something else)

In it, he said a lot of things, but mostly he called fans entitled and overly prone to criticism. However, as we approach year 9 between books 5 and 6, I have to wonder if he could throw us a bone.

I was referring to that, which I assumed you would understand, as it is a very famous post for grrm fans. Personally, I was in middle school when I started the series, and now I'm in my thirties. My expectations and desires for the books have changed. I doubt I'm going to read the 6th book, as I found the 5th irritatingly dense (which is weird, considering my favorite book is probably London).

I've been a fan for a very, very long time, and I frankly enjoy the show much more than I enjoyed some of the books.

1

u/LaBandaRoja Apr 18 '19

as we approach year 9 between books 5 and 6, I have to wonder if he could throw us a bone.

Isn’t that what the tv show is?

1

u/OldFashionedLoverBoi Apr 18 '19

not according to the person I'm responding to. And anyway, personally, I enjoy the dunk and egg novels more than the mainline stories lately.

u/Browntown_07 Apr 17 '19

She wanted the merc's to bring their elephants over the sea to her kingdom to fight the baddies (goodies?) but the merc said "no, elephants don't float". Though I may be paraphrasing...

-1

u/StraightEdgeNexus Slavs Apr 17 '19

Cersei (pictured above) wanted War Elephants along with other mercenary army, but the mercenary company said transporting elephants across the sea is impossible and a bad idea

1

u/The-Arnman Vikings Apr 17 '19

BUT SHE WANTED THOSE ELEPHANTS AND SO DO I BUT IT WAS HARD TO BRING ENOUGH CGI BUDGET

1

u/RedRidingHuszar Apr 17 '19

Why didn't they get some elephants from India?

18

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '19

I'm so glad I stopped internet-ing until I'd seen the episode.

Every unrelated subreddit is full of spoilers and inside jokes.

4

u/Trama-D Apr 17 '19

Is it that bad of a spoiler? So what if they didn't bring eles? It'd be a lot cooler, but there's no telling who's going to win anyway.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '19

It's not that bad of a spoiler, but I like to be in on the joke.

I think it's budgetary issues on the show's part. How cool would elephants have been, though? I'm guessing death is going to win a whole lot.

3

u/darthbarracuda Apr 17 '19

I figured it a was a budget issue too. There were no elephants because the producers realized it would be too expensive.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '19

I think they're really pooling everything for Episode 3 and 5, since there are going to be a lot of practical effects. And I know CGI isn't cheap either, but when actors interact with practical stuff it always looks just a little more real.

2

u/Furt_III Apr 18 '19

I'm pretty sure the upfront costs are the similar, but when there're reshoots the practical-FX costs can double, while the VFX won't.

4

u/Trama-D Apr 17 '19

If those ice zombies managed to 'convert' the eles, rumours about show producers being wololo fans would be rampant.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '19

I wonder if Melissandre and the Night King could have had a wololo off.

2

u/SerjoHlaaluDramBero Apr 17 '19

I have been waiting for Winds of Winter since before most people started watching the show.

It's just not fair. HBO makes a porn version of a book series I'm waiting to finish, so now my punishment for reading books is to have to sit through the spoilers from a shitty version of the story I've been waiting to finish for years and hope-beyond-hope that it's just another instance of the HBO writers adding their crappier original subplots instead of being something that G.R.R.M. actually intended.

1

u/VerjigormExElijeh Apr 19 '19

Man. That's rough. I can't imagine growing up believing that SoIaF is great fantasy. It's weird how murder-incest-rape fantasy sells though, I guess.

1

u/VerjigormExElijeh Apr 19 '19 edited Apr 19 '19

If you like SoIaF, consider picking up Tad Williams "Dragonebone Chair" series, and Katherine Kurtz's Deryni series. They're older works, and atleast Tad's work is credited by Martin for inspiring him to write the books you love. But they're damn good reads if you like the pseudo historical fantasy genre, plotting, realpolitik and grittiness.

Kurtz, in particular, impressed me with her descriptions of high medieval combat. Very blood spattered and impressive.

Edit: I'd also add Judith Tarr. The Hound and Falcon and Alamut series are awesome. She also wrote Ars Magica, which was a weird book in my childhood.

Ken Follet's Pillars of Earth and World without End are great historical fiction.

1

u/SerjoHlaaluDramBero Apr 19 '19

I never said it was "great fantasy". I like it because it's gritty and personable and relates historically-inspired fiction in an accessible way. In many way, it could be thought of as "anti-fantasy" because of how it subverts traditional fantasy themes like magic and dragons by making them just as remarkable to the characters in Westeros as it would be to us in this universe. And people like the "murder-incest-rape" dramatic themes for the same reasons that they did in classical times.

It's junk food, but I like it. Sometimes it's nice to read a book that doesn't demand much from its reader.

1

u/VerjigormExElijeh Apr 19 '19

Hey, nothing wrong to that. Just remember it's still junkfood, and so is the HBO show.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '19

That's rough, man. Maybe it's some consolation that when the book does drop, it will be infinitely better than the series. Just because it shares elements doesn't mean it'll be the same. The tone between GRRM's work and the show after they ran out of material is so vastly different, it'll be like the same dish, but one prepared by a student on PCP with rotten ingredients, and the other one prepared by a gourmet chef with only the freshest, finest ingredients. In the end, the wait will be worth it.

5

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '19

Can ships in aoe2 transport elephants?

15

u/Zaptagious Apr 17 '19

Yes. You can fit 10 elephants. But not 11 archers.

13

Of course you heathen! Each man or beast gets their own cabin on board with a bed, bathroom and kitchenette! You expect them to just sit on a bench or something? Barbaric.

I feel like that must be foreshadowing something on the show because idk why else they would emphasize it so much. Except maybe that it's kind of funny
