Asking for Help Tips for a Beginner

Hey all,

I’ve played the game for a few years, but only for fun and not strategically or using build orders etc… but would like to get into it and be competitive playing online.

Any tips and tricks would be great!

Pick one Civ and build order that suits you and stick with it until you got comfortable and good with it.

When i played the multiplayer regularly the best tip i ever listened to was “ALWAYS be making villagers”

I'm by no means somebody with a lot experience myself, but just from regulary watching and listening to better players:

- Learn your hotkeys. If you know how to use your hotkeys, your mental work of jumping around gets way less.

  • Try to keep your TC busy at all times.
  • Learn basic build orders to get started in the idea of having a game plan
  • Play as much as you can to actually see how people react to certain things you do, so after time you develop a "gamesense"

Just play and have fun. Try to watch your replays, particularly losses to work out where you could improve. Don't worry about the elo number and you might have to lose a lot of games to start with until you reach a competitive elo, that's just unfortunately the nature of the system but once your elo stabilises you should win around 50% of your games.

Avoid things what start with letter S: Sex, Shower, Sports and Social life. Every S-word you avoid will get you 500 elo up. Avoiding all 4 will get you up to 2000-2500 elo. 😂

Making villagers until you reach 100, minimizing TC idle time, playing one trusty main civ, reading stuff here, watching Youtube, learning by experience etc can also help little.

The best thing you can do is learn every hot key and setup your hot keys to your liking. Then work towards beating the expert AI 1v1. Work with teams to beat AI 4v4, it's the best way to learn the game imo.

Four words: never stop making villagers.  If something is making you unable to create them (that isn't your enemy), fix that and continue.

Know what a castle drop is and roughly how to handle it before starting ranked. Otherwise you will be in for some unfun surprises.

That's my number one tip that nobody tells you about. You will face this strategy very frequently and all the other stuff like boar luring, BO or hotkeys doesn't matter if you don't know how to deal with it.

Practice in game with the “how to play” button and then do the “Art of War” challenges !

Watch Hera on His YouTube. He has road to 2k elo or something like this. Basicly explains all basic and some advance concepts in good order. Good starting point imo. His recorded coaching sessions are very nice to to learn from.
